From the Bridge –
Commodore Glenn Nixon
Sheila and I hope our members continue to be safe and healthy. We are very grateful to see a smooth start to the season. Thanks again to all the members who took
part in preparing the clubhouse and harbor and grounds. By all accounts our Club is clean, organized and ready for members to enjoy.
I hope all our members enjoyed Fitting Out - Memorial Weekend festivities. The traditional Flag Raising ceremony went very well with perfect weather conditions. We are very grateful to the family of Jack Buzard, the first Commodore of the Chrysler Yacht Club, for the generous gift of his painted portrait. Next time you are in the Clubhouse, be sure to have a look at it. It is hanging just outside the vestibule of the North entrance.
Thank you to all the members who took part in the Saturday evening dinner and George Brother's Band performance during Memorial Weekend. We received a lot of good feedback on the caterer. No question we will be asking Detroit BBQ Company to return for future catered dinners at our Club.
Thanks to all the members and guests who attended the Commodore's Ball. Sheila and I realize it was a break from tradition to hold the Ball at the Club, but all things considered and based on the feedback we received, the event was a resounding success. I cannot begin to describe how very grateful I am to our Lady Sheila. We were able to keep all the normal traditions, enjoy a delicious sit-down meal and enjoy one of the top bands in the area, all due to her persistence, patience, skill and hard work. Thank you to all who helped with the Ball planning, setup and cleanup. I am very grateful to all who participated in the Ball event, especially our outstanding Chaplain, Mark Javery, my longtime friend Ken Lipowski for serving as Master of Ceremonies, and toastmaster Past Commodore Don Vanover. Also, thanks to the fin drivers the evening of the Ball. It was a major feat to move the catering materials, catering staff, band equipment, band members and all attendees without a boat, to and from the island!
Reminding everyone to watch for additional details from the Fleet Captain on the July and August rendezvous. If you have not made reservations yet, please do so as soon as possible. Also please watch for fanouts on the Commodore's Cruise. We are finalizing the dates and venues and hope to arrange some fun outings in the Petoskey area.
We look forward to seeing our fellow members at the Club. Everyone please stay safe and have a happy and productive July.
Glenn Nixon

Wow, what a great opening weekend. The island and the club look outstanding and special thanks
to our Board of Directors for bringing it all together. Our Elite Brigade weekends were outstanding this year and the two Work Party Weekends finished up what needed to be done. Special thanks to the Sea Cadets for their participation in our Sunday Flag Raising activities and for the Pride of Michigan’s attendance at the event. It was a truly outstanding ceremony this year and Commodore Glenn’s involvement of the Buzard family added a special touch. As the planning continues, we are looking forward to the Commodore’s Ball this weekend. With Commodore Glenn and First Lady Sheila in charge, we know it will be a first-class event. Thank you to all the Board of Directors for coming together as a team and contributing to an outstanding opening weekend and I encourage you to continue to work as a team throughout the year for the betterment of NCYC. Thank you, V/C Dale

A Message from Chaplain Mark Javery
Continue to keep P/C Scott Bell in your thoughts and prayers as he mourns the passing of his wife,
past First Mates president Kathy Bell.
Things quiet down, the cards stop, and the phone calls are fewer after the busy time of the final arrangements and earthly goodbyes of a close loved one or spouse. This is when our brothers and sisters need us even more. Time doesn’t heal all when we lose our spouse to death. Praise God we have the blessed assurance knowing we will be reunited in glory as believers but we are still emotional human beings. Death of a loved one is a process we get through with God’s mercy and grace, but still we need to check on each other and let those God has put in our circle know we care and are there for them……long after the funeral. I had to send this month beacon to publications early as I am shipping out on The Pride of Michigan with P/C Bill Calahan for a northern Lake Huron adventure. We are taking the US Navy Sea Cadets and diving on several undocumented shipwrecks for NOAA. I will be checking my email and messages as signal allows but please understand if I can’t reply immediately as I normally try. Independence Day - July 4, 2021 A significant day we celebrate our cherished freedoms. Although not a religious holiday I think it is still a good time to also reflect on God’s goodness to our nation.
The fact we have so many freedoms including the religious freedom to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ should not be taken for granted. The religious liberty we enjoy as a nation has come at a great price, paid by the blood, sweat, and tears of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Apostle Paul in Romans 13:7 told us to render “honor to whom honor is owed”. So as you celebrate Independence Day enjoying precious family time never forget to honor and pray for our armed service personnel who remain our guardians of freedom. Their service and God’s grace will ensure we maintain our freedom’s.
Wishing you and yours a meaningful and blessed 4th of July and I will leave you with an awesome quote from an awesome president.
“If we ever forget that we are one nation under God, Then we will be a nation gone under.” President Ronald Reagan

First Mates Mention The first mates were very busy in May helping to get the club ready for opening weekend. Many hands made for light work, from scrubbing the kitchen and every inch of the clubhouse, stocking the boutique to rival the shops at Partridge Creek and even planting the grounds and creating the fairy garden.
Thank you to all who contributed your time and talents to make the 2021 opening weekend such a success and helped the clubhouse shine!
Memorial Day saw the opening of the club, and members arrived by boat and by fin. The First Mates patio party was a great success and the “drink of the day” disappeared swiftly leaving big smiles on all who enjoyed a glass or two. The Detroit Barbeque did not disappoint with their awesome Saturday night dinner, we can’t wait to welcome them back to the club. Thank you to Commodore Glenn and Lady Sheila for bringing them to the club! Dinner was followed by the crowd favorite “The George Brothers Band” who kept everyone grooving to the music all night. The flag raising ceremony on Sunday was beautiful and had many First Mates Past Presidents and Past Commodores in attendance along with our current board of directors, flag officers and first mates board of directors. The beautiful sunny day brought out a great group for the gathering. The Commodore’s Ball was spectacular….the clubhouse was transformed, the members looked fabulous and the food by Chef Bobby did not disappoint but the showstopper was the BAND!!! The dance floor was full until the last song was played! It truly was a night to remember...thank you to all who attended and all who worked so hard on this very special event. The boutique has an amazing selection of North Channel merchandise-if you haven’t visited yet you will want to plan a visit soon. Jill has outdone herself with both the quantity and quality of merchandise this year and is breaking sales records! New merchandise is on the way but you better shop quickly since it won’t last long!
The countdown is on until the Fourth of July Celebration on the island. The weekend will be filled with music, food, friends and fireworks off the north channel!
The First Mates Labor Day Dinner will be Sunday, September 5th and will feature broasted chicken, salad bar, potato bar and ice cream bar. The classic Maniac’s will be playing and are sure to get everyone up on the dancefloor! Adults will be $20 and kids 12 and under are $10. Reservations can be sent to Christa Betts, 7202 Flamingo, Clay, MI 48001.
