2021 - June Beacon
NCYC JUNE 2021 BEACON
From the Bridge –
Commodore Glenn Nixon
We are very pleased the COVID situation has improved allowing us to resume a more normal schedule. Thank you to all the members who attended the General
Membership meeting on Saturday, May 29th. It was a special honor to welcome all the new members to our Club. We regretfully were informed during the meeting of the passing of our Harbor and Grounds Director, Tom Altobelli. We were fortunate to be able to honor both Tom and longtime member Al Durand with a moment of silence. We wish for peace and comfort to the family and friends of Tom and Al. Hopefully everyone is pleased with the condition of the harbor and grounds. We had huge turnouts for every Elite Brigade party and regular work parties. Thanks to all who came out to help - we have many members working long hours to get the island in shape. Special thanks to P/C Randy Pagel for his contribution to the new pedestal installation on the Robison and R/C Dale Hall for his oversight and hard work filling in for Tom Altobelli. V/C Dale did an outstanding job in particular handling the walkway backfill and Genow seawall repair. Special thanks to Tony Rybinski for putting us in contact with the company that did the foam injection repairs.
As always, huge thank you to all the board members. It is a great group of people. We all work very well together and are making
great progress in addressing issues, bringing on new members and conducting the business of the club.
As you may already know we are holding the Commodore's Ball in the NCYC clubhouse on June 12th. We are very excited to finally have the ball and thanks in advance everyone who will attend. Remember to keep watch for fanouts from the Fleet Captain about the rendezvous and commodore's cruise. Sheila and I are especially looking forward to travelling this year and hope we can get good participation. Also keep an eye out for fanouts from the Clubhouse Manager, Tony Scicluna. Weekday managers are still needed for one of the weeks and several others need helpers. We are excited to get the boating season underway and look forward to seeing everyone at the fun events planned for the season!
From the Bridge – Vice Commodore Dale Hall
In front of the NCYC clubhouse, the North Channel is full of fishing boats, a true sign that boating season has arrived.
Special thanks to all members that have come out for an outstanding group of Elite Brigade weekends. This year was one of the best attended Elite Brigades in NCYC’s history. We still have over 5 weeks until the official first day of Summer, let’s make the most of those days planning and executing a great opening for our club. There are still several projects that need attention prior to our opening. We are working hard to resolve the seawall issues on the West end of the island as well as repairs to the dock extension on the Northeast corner of Battleship Row. The board still has plans to mitigate the water issues under the clubhouse and there is still plenty of work in and around the building in preparation for opening day. With the hard work of our great club, I know it will all come together in time.
Remember to bring your 2020 Membership Card to the island and use up any remaining funds from last year. Leftover funds will NOT transfer to your new card however, you can pick up your NEW (2021) Membership Card as soon as you get to the club. Please remember to charge up your 2021 card after you exhaust all the funds from your 2020 card. As we wrestle with all the regular business presented to the NCYC Board of Directors, I ask that continued hard work and cooperation be at the forefront of your mind as we interact with each other for the betterment of NCYC. Thank you, V/C Dale
From the Bridge – Rear
Commodore Brian Fringer
Rachel and I hope everyone are doing well and staying safe! I would like to thank everyone who came out and worked at the Elite Brigade work parties. We definitely got a lot accomplished. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the next two work parties and putting the final touches on our great club in order to have her ready for opening weekend. Thank You, RC B
A Message from Chaplain Mark Javery
While enjoying opening weekend and preparing for the solemn Memorial Day flag raising
ceremony, we received the sad news that member / Board Director Tom Altobelli had passed away. Please keep his wife Marilyn, daughter Nicole, and their entire family in your thoughts and prayers. I also learned that long time member Kathy Bell continues her fight with cancer. Keep her and P/C Scott Bell in your thoughts and prayers. As we now enjoy our opened island, clubhouse, planned activities, rendezvous, and renewed fellowship with each other please be safe and always mindful of how blessed we are. Too often the sacrifices fathers make go unseen and unappreciated. Their value is sometimes not acknowledged, which is why fathers have been called the world’s most unsung heroes. A father’s influence and godly behavior will make a lasting impression on their children. The righteous man walks in his integrity; His children are blessed after him. Proverbs 20:7 (nkjv)
Wishing all our dad’s a happy and blessed Father’s Day!
Only a Dad Only a dad, with a tired face, Coming home from the daily race ,
Bringing little of gold or fame, To show how well he has played the game, But glad in his heart that his own rejoice, To see him come and to hear his voice.
Only a dad, with brood of four, One of ten million men or more, Plodding along in the daily strife,
Bearing the whips and the scorns of life, With never a whimper of pain or hate, For the sake of those who at home await. Only a dad, neither rich nor proud, Merely one of the surging crowd, Toiling, striving from day to day, Facing whatever may come his way, Silent, whenever the harsh condemn, And bearing it all for the love of them. Only a dad, but he gives his all, To smooth the way for his children small, Doing with courage stern and grim, The deeds that his father did for him.
This is the line that for him I pen, Only a dad, but the best of men.

Commodore’s Comments
Commodore, Glenn Nixon
Sheila and I hope our members continue to be safe and healthy. It appears the Michigan winter is finally over…we hope. There have been a number board members making visits to the island already to get a head start on the inevitable winter repairs and clubhouse preparations. Thank you to those taking the time and braving the elements to get started on the work. Sheila and I have moved forward with the planning for hosting the Commodore's Ball at NCYC on June 12. We have secured rental of a 40' x 80' tent and are making final arrangements for catering and all the amenities needed to conduct the event to maintain all the ceremony and traditions our members have come to expect at the Ball. Everyone should have received a "save the date" fanout and will shortly receive the formal invitation. Everyone should have received a fanout from our Fleet Captain regarding final plans for the two rendezvous for this season. Please make your slip reservations as soon as possible. Continue to watch for fanouts from your Fleet Captains for updates. Our first Elite Brigade is coming up in less than two weeks on April 17th! The Board and Flag are finalizing planning for the needed projects, along with bringing on a raft of new members and approving weekday rendezvous. Please everyone keep an eye on your email for fanouts and stay informed. The time is going to go quickly now. We are looking forward to robust turnouts to the Elite Brigades as well as regular work parties.
We look forward to seeing our fellow members very soon. Everyone please stay safe and have a happy and productive April.

Vice-Commodore’s Comments
Vice Commodore, Dale Hall
We are up against the opening of the club next month and the weather is cooperating in SE Michigan. With the uncertainty of 2021 we are hoping for a reduction in the virus and the excitement of everyone to get behind a great opening of the club and a great boating season. April 17 th will be our first Elite Brigade and we need all “All Hands-on Deck” to make the club ready for our opening weekend in late May. We have several projects with the seawalls and the walkways and with good participation, we should be able to achieve these prior to opening. As you prepare for the Summer, please make sure your NCYC Burgee is displayed in plain view on your boat and remind all our members to do the same. This is also a great time to check all your boat’s safety equipment and update anything that is damaged or missing.
