2022 - April

NCYC April 2022 Beacon

April 2022 Flag Comments

From The Flag

The ice in the North Channel is melting and the birds are returning to Michigan and things on the island are starting to look normal again. Work has started on Fin 2 to completely strip the bottom and prepare it for major repairs to resolve numerous rust holes and dents in the hull. Several members have work long hours to ensure a quality repair and additional years of service for our favorite Fin Runner. We are still on schedule to return Fin 2 to the parking lot at the end of April. Work has also started on the walkway between the Boatique and D Dock with Ron’s Marine removing the old walkway and starting to drive steel for the new supports. NCYC will be doing all the finish work to install the wooden joists and the deck during the Elite Brigade Weekends and Work Party Weekends. As we prepare for the opening of our club, the Board of Directors are busy getting organized and ready to put the Club back into shape for the 2022 Summer. Please remember that we need all-hands-on deck this Spring as there are several large

projects and several smaller projects that need to be completed in a short six-week period. The Elite Brigade workdays are:

Saturday April 16 th Saturday April 23 rd Saturday April 30 th Saturday May 7 th And the Official Work Party days are:

Saturday May 14 th Saturday May 21st As a reminder, you can get your required 4 hours of work either on an Elite Brigade or Work Party Saturday. Opening weekend is Saturday & Sunday May 28 th & 29 th . The calendar of events and the 2022 work schedule were published in the March Beacon and appear again this month in the Beacon. There have been a couple of small changes and additions and we will continue to update the schedule The Flag and Board of Directors have been working to plan the opening of NCYC for the 2022 boating season. There are several springtime projects that are already under way at NCYC. 1) Fin 2 will be receiving some major repair work to stabilize the hull. Fin 2 will be moved to an inside location on March 7 th so that work can begin and be returned to the parking lot, ready to launch by late April. 2) The walkway between the Boatique and D-Dock will be under construction starting in Mid-April. Quotes were received and Bret Kahl from Ron’s Marine won the bid to start the steel work in Mid-April. The Elite Brigade & Work Parties will finish all the woodwork in late April and early May. We have additional work on the island that could use a high-quality project manager. Anyone interested in heading up one of the following projects, please get in touch

with Harbor & Grounds Director Terry, Rear Commodore Scott, Vice Commodore Brian, or Commodore Dale. These projects include: 1) Inspecting all boards and replacing faulty or rotted wood on all the walkways and docks in the East Harbor 2) Installation of a new railing on A Dock and Battleship Row 3) Installation of new paddleboard dock NCYC was well represented at the Blessing of the Fleet at Mariners Cathedral in Detroit on Sunday, March 13 th . We would like to thank Flag Members, Board Members and NCYC Members that were in attendance. The Ceremony lasted approximate an hour and a half and pictures are included in later pages of this Beacon. The own NCYC Burgee, which will be flown from the Cupola for the 2022 season, was blessed during the service. This is a great tradition for our club as we honor the lives of many great volunteers that have helped make boating on the Great Lakes the Treasured Gem that we all enjoy. The ABYA Fiesta Fundraiser was held on March 27th at Zef’s Dockside. It was well attended by our NCYC members. ABYA put on a great event, the food was fantastic, there was great comradery and a good time was had by all. We look forward to the continued mild weather and a great start to the year for our great North Channel Yacht Club family. Thank you to everyone in advance for your dedication and for finding ways to use your talent to better our club.

A Message from Chaplain Mark Javery

NOTES FROM CHAPLAIN MARK JAVERY Remember to keep Jeff and Tami Bradford in your thoughts and prayers as they mourn the recent loss of Jeff’s mother Elaine Bradford. P/C Rick Romatz had recently not been feeling well and experienced chest pains. Fortunately he sought treatment which resulted in a short hospital stay and heart catheterization procedure all too familiar for him. A stent was placed correcting a blockage and he is home recovering. Speaking to him at recent ABYA and HPYC events he reports he is feeling great, praise God. “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness”…A verse from a song that I sang without much thought as a child growing up in a Christian church. Later in my spiritual journey the meaning of these words hit home and they would never be sung again without the solemn realization that there is no hope, nothing we can do to prove ourselves worthy of heaven. It is the blood of Christ on the cross, His subsequent death, burial, and resurrection that saves our souls from an eternity of separation from God. Resurrection Sunday is truly our holiest most important day as a Christian.

The Easter season is upon us, as there are signs of the Lord’s handiwork and blessings everywhere. I love the season of spring with the warmer

temperatures, greening grass, flowers blooming, birds returning and wildlife becoming more active. As a boater and NCYC member launching the boat, I so enjoy our lake, returning to our beautiful island and making memories with our club family. With spring comes Easter and the celebration of our Lord’s resurrection. In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, take a moment and really reflect on the blessing of His resurrection and what it means to us. We will not be condemned to hell for our sins but taken to live with Him in heaven if we but only accept and trust in His finished work on the cross. We will have no more pain or sorrow, we will be reunited with those who have gone before us, and we will see our Savior face to face. 1 Peter 1:3 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead”

Christ the Lord is risen, He is risen indeed.
