May 2022 Flag Comments
From The Flag
A huge thank you goes out to our NCYC membership for the great attendance at the first 3 weeks of Elite Brigade work parties. Many projects have been started and a few have even been completed but, there are many more items to work on prior to opening. The first Saturday in May we held our last Elite Brigade work party and wrapped up a morning of hard work with our traditional steak luncheon. We will be finishing up our preparation of the island with the Official Work Parties on May 14th & May 21st. Please continue to show up and work to make our great club “Come to Life” for the 2022 season. The Walkway project continues to move along but, we could use some additional help to ensure this is completed in the next three weekends. The parking lot on the mainland will receive grading and additional rock will be laid and leveled to provide a finished look that should last for years to come. This work will begin on Monday, May 9th. Any boats that were stored for the winter should be out of the parking lot based on the agreement in your contract. Please make sure any & all of your equipment has been removed so that the contractors can complete this work. We did experience a slight bit of damage from the ice flows this winter out at the corner of Battleship Row & A Dock. We will need to move one piling that was
pushed over before we can complete the work on the dock extension. However, we still plan to have this work complete by Opening weekend.
During our March & April Board of Directors meetings we discussed several communication improvements. We are happy to report to the membership that several areas of concern have been addressed. Our club is in a strong financial position. This is probably the best financial position for NCYC in over 15 years but, we have several large expenditures lined up in the next 12 months. The membership has done a great job of planning and we can approach these improvements with confidence. This board has also made an extra effort to effectively communicate to our membership in a consistent and straight forward manner our financial position. It can be found on the website in the “Documents/Financial Documents” section. A consistent/monthly publication of the Beacon, chucked full of the club’s business, updated lake information as well as great boating tips Open line of communication with our committees to ensure we are honoring the traditions of NCYC At the April Board of Directors Meeting, we reviewed several clarifications and suggestions to club policies presented by the Guidelines, Policy & Traditions Committee. After careful review, much discussion and a few changes to the proposals the board has approved changes to the following items. These changes will be noted in the 2022 Roster and/or discussed at the Fitting Out General Membership meeting.
1) Upstairs Sleeping Rooms 2) Kitchen & Storage Facilities 3) Fin Runner 4) Guests & Visiting Yachtsmen 5) Dress Code for Flag Officers and Past Commodores 6) Use of Island boat wells
Your board is also making an extra effort to document, in detail, each directors responsibilities throughout the year as well as assignments for opening & closing the club. Our plan is to publish this information on the NCYC website for future boards to use.
Spring of 2022 has been challenging, yet very rewarding. We look forward to milder weather and a great start to the year for our great North Channel Yacht Club family. Thank you to everyone in advance for your dedication and for finding ways to use your talent to better our club.

A Message from Chaplain Mark Javery
The past month has again brought loss and heartache to members in our NCYC family.
Member Jodi Lancaster passed away April 15th. Uphold her husband Everitt, their children, and entire family in your thoughts and prayers.
May is a month in which we remember and honor two groups of individuals that deserve so much more than just a day….
As Mother’s Day approaches we are reminded of how important of a role our mothers play in our lives. From positive guidance, representation of unwavering faith, to delivering unconditional love and teachable moments, mothers are real life heroes in their own right and a blessing from God. Memorial Day a solemn day assigned to a debt we can never repay. To those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and their families who live with their loss words seem a disservice. But words we have, so I will use them to my best ability and I pledge in addition to keep these heroes in my heart and prayers. “Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it. It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it.” (Unknown author)
God’s Special Creation
The hand that rocks the cradle also makes a house a home. It is the prayers of the mother that keeps the family strong.
Mother rises early in the morning and bathes her day in prayer. She talks to God about her family and places them in His care.
Mother communicates her love in a thousand different ways. When there’s a need, she is there, whether it is night or day.
Mother seasons life with love and gives so much of herself. God placed in her the best He had and made her unlike anyone else.
When challenges come our way and when trials block our view, Mother kneels down beside her bed and prays the family through.
Mother is God’s special creation She is a light shining in the dark, illuminating the path for her family and pointing them toward God.

1) Battleship row dock installation. Spoke with Member Kevin Verkest to see what his eta is on scheduling. Once we have a date, I will be sending a fan out to the Membership asking for volunteers to help assist on completing this project. Waiting on date to finish Battleship Row to ask for volunteers 2) I have met with Nick from St Clair Grading LLC and have received an estimate for re-surfacing and adding stone in the parking lot and to address to sink hole at the parking lot entrance. The estimate was for $10,000.00 to Resurface & rough grade of the gravel lot. (275’ x 95’ x 75’)Haul in approx. 200 tons of 21aa Crushed Concrete, rough grade to create a fresh top layer of stone roughly 2” for majority, more/less in higher vs lower areas. Also to install aggregate as needed in the entry/gate approach and rough grade to eliminate existing pot holes. He is also going to grade existing area and use the stone on site to level the low areas to the best of his ability before capping with the new stone.
March 10, 2022
3) I know the above upgrade to the lot is expensive but is a much needed upgrade since the lot has been neglected for many years, and is well within the Harbor and Grounds budget. I defiantly believe that the members would benefit from the upgrade due to possible low lying areas that can be consider trip hazards. Also the benefit of the new stone would give the lot some much needed curb appeal to our members, guest, and future members
4) I Motion to accept this bid as stated below
St. Claire Grading will provided estimate – 10K to resurface and rough grade the parking lot.
**Motion to approve ½ cost of estimate to get on schedule of company. (Deposit of 5K)
