North Channel Yacht Club July 2023 Beacon
From The Flag,
We would like to thank our great NCYC membership for making June a great month on the island. The weather has been unseasonably warm which has resulted in the boating season getting off to a faster than normal pace.
The weekend activities at the club have been very well attended throughout the month of June and even the weekdays have seen many members staying overnight to enjoy the beauty of the island and the comradery of our membership. Many members continue to work tirelessly to maintain the island and the clubhouse, and we can’t thank you enough for all the hard work. Many projects came together as planned and have added to the beauty of our island. 1. The new seawall and walkway were completed on time and ready for opening weekend. Additional soil was placed along the walkway for backfill and the pedestals were reinstalled. Thanks to many members that spent hours on this huge undertaking. 2. The new garage was completed, and the new walk-in cooler was assembled and was functioning for opening weekend.
There are few items that we still need to be completed on the garage and those projects will be completed timely.
The ladies of NCYC held an outstanding Lady’s Week June 18 th – 23 rd . Special thanks to Rachel Fringer and Jill Romatz for organizing all the activities and hosting approximately 40 participates. The week received rave reviews and Rachel would like to thank all the Lady’s that attended. June also ushered in our first NCYC Rendezvous hosted by our Fleet Captains Shelly and Gary Schroka. The rendezvous was held at South Channel Yacht Club and approximately 25 boats attended. Even though it was a little damp on Friday, the weather cleared up and was great fun and well planned by our Fleet Captains. The NCYC Boating Season is off to a very fast start, and we would encourage everyone to review the Schedule of Events and get your calendar blocked and get involved for the remainder of the Summer. We look forward to seeing you on the island.

A Message from Chaplain Mark Javery
CHAPLAIN NOTES JULY 2023
Since our last Beacon was published members of our NCYC family are in need of our love, support, and prayers.
P/C Denise Huntley has been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Denise sought medical advice from several institutions and has started treatment at Karmanos. Pray for strength for Denise. Pray her medical care team will have wisdom from God and treat her with compassion. Remembering also to pray that Denise, Tom, and their entire family will feel the presence, comfort, and peace only God can give. Remember to keep Jerry Krist and Irene Martin in your thoughts and prayers as they process and mourn the recent passing of daughter Janette. As too many in our membership know the loss of a child is a pain no parent should know. I pray they feel our genuine love and support. Keep Linda Pagel in your prayers as she recovers from a recent fall and broken femur that required major surgical intervention. The surgery went well, and she anticipates a lengthy recovery as she cannot put weight on her injured leg for many weeks. Also remember P/C Randy as he cares for Linda during her rehabilitation.
Praise God that Sandy Bauer has returned home from rehabilitation and continues to heal from her fall and total hip replacement procedure.
I am sure there are others in our NCYC family going through trials that we are not aware of or those who may have unspoken prayer requests. When you pray ask God to comfort and heal these brothers and sisters too. Our lives are increasingly becoming more fast-paced, which often translates into less family time and gatherings. Growing up I took for granted that during these wonderful gatherings I could take time to share moments with and remind my dad how proud I was to be his son. June provided us with a special day to celebrate the fathers in our lives. I hope that if your father is still with you that you were able to enjoy this day together. As a father I am reminded to strive daily to look to God the Father as our ultimate example of who we should be. I wish that all our NCYC dads had a happy and blessed Father’s Day. Proverbs 22:6 “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” This month we celebrated our countries Independence Day. Do take time to reflect on God’s goodness to our nation and the freedoms we enjoy. Although many of our freedoms seem to be under attack and “In God we trust” is not a statement many of our leaders will claim today, God hasn’t turned his back on us as a nation. Galatians 5:13 “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.”
First Mates Mention July 2023
Memorial Day Weekend was a HUGE Success: We had a very nice turn out at our First Mates General Membership meeting on the May 27 th . We welcomed seven new members that weekend. If there is anyone who would like to join First Mates, it’s never too late to do so! Please contact Membership Director, Colleen Hall at mossieoak@sbcglobal.net or 586-536-4220 to become a member. THANK YOU ….Thank you again to all that joined us! Our “Annual Patio Party” was very successful with the help from our very own, Social Director, Shannon Nagaj. We couldn’t have had a better day for this event. Let’s give another round of applause to Dennis Alcazar for winning the “Wagon of Cheer”. We hope you enjoy!
Boatique
Don’t forget that Jill has so many GREAT new items in the Boatique, just waiting for you to check out and purchase them!
President’s Charity: This year, Charrae Trocki would like to collect donations for residents that live at Martha T. Berry Medical Facility. Note: First Mates will start collecting items in July! Martha T. Berry Foundation Mission Statement: The future of Martha T. Berry, MCF is tied to the generosity of the individuals closest to it. We all want the assurance that the very best health care will be available when our family, our friends, or we ourselves need it. The Martha T. Berry
Foundation’s aim is just that; to continue to support this wonderful facility and the population it serves.
Since 1950, Macomb County continues to honor its commitment to its residents by providing the most needed medical care and nursing services to the elderly, frail, and most vulnerable residents. Your donation will continue to support the legacy of service to the community. Even the smallest donation can make a difference in the lives of the residents of Martha T. Berry, Medical Care Facility. Colleen Hall is collecting those returnable again this year! The money that she collected last year, paid for the “New” Bed sheets and helped pay for other items for our beautiful club. You can place your empty can/bottles in the Forest Green Rubbermaid trash can that will be labeled. If you have a lot of them, please label and place your bag in the “Empty Keg” shed. Colleen will be glad to take them!
Looking ahead…..

Vice Commodore’s Comments
Thank You to all the Board Members and members that were able to come out and join us at the Island. The last couple of weekends we were able to remove all but one tree to get ready for the Garage construction and west harbor walkway installation. I’m sure we are going to see a lot of the Members come out and give a hand over the next six weeks to get the Clubhouse and Grounds ready for Opening weekend. The 2024 NCYC Commodores Ball will be February 3,2024 at Marriott, Auburn Hills. Further details will follow as we progress. With all of the Michigan MLCC and Insurance regulation changes and the NCYC Policy changes, I feel it is time to communicate the changes to the membership and educate the Members how important these changes and policies and processes are for the club to stay compliant with the State local laws and MLCC rules and Insurance requirements.
Rear Commodore, Bill Burkhardt
Rear Commodore’s Comments
The Club is open, the water is turned on, and it is go-time for spring projects. As the commodore mentioned we have lots to do and need a lot of help. Anyone with carpentry, concrete, or general labor skills is needed over the next 3-4 weeks to get the projects completed and the Club opened.

Clubhouse
The Clubhouse is in good condition following the winter. Some minor items of note to be addressed between now and opening weekend. From our visit on March 26 th , I’d like to take a moment to recognize our resident racoon wrangler, Secretary Javery for his efforts in addressing the racoon who clearly was disappointed that the bar was not yet open for the season. I’d like to acknowledge and thank the members of the flag, board and general membership that worked together to turn the water on to the island and clubhouse last weekend, April 8 th . We have signed a biennial (every other year) maintenance agreement for the air handlers/air conditioning systems on the 1 st and 2 nd floors of the club house. This preventative maintenance should reduce the risk of unplanned outages of cool air in the summer and should also extend the useful life of the equipment. The schedule is:
Lower Level - 2023 Upper Level - 2024 Lower Level - 2025 Upper Level - 2026 Lower Level - 2027 Upper Level - 2028

Harbor & Grounds
We have many good things going on this spring for all to enjoy. As you look around the club you will see a lot of new improvements (once completed) to the island such as new sea wall, walkways and the new garage / cooler. I would like to thank everyone in advance for their dedication and hard work for helping out with completing these projects, without that the club would not be what it is today. We have many projects as you can see to complete before opening. There are (4) elite brigades first one starting April 15 @ 8 a.m. and (2) work parties to get your 4 hrs in. So come on out and lend a helping hand where needed
We have Bucket Baby Tree Service coming out to go over the schedule to start trimming of the trees and also to top the (2) trees on the Robeson
Spoke with Waste Management regarding start up for the season. First pickup will be Monday 4/17. Our pick up days for the season are Mondays and Thursdays every week
Spoke with Jay’s Septic Service and requested startup of cleaning the Porta Potty. Cleani ng of Porta Potty will be done twice a month, as of now the dates to be cleaned are unknown. They will be getting back with me on that
As always if you see anything that needs some attention please bring it to my attention so we can give the issue some attention
We need to get the Septic System on the island scheduled to be pumped out. PC Blackburn would like it scheduled before the club opens and would like to see either May 22nd or 23 rd . If we could get those dates confirmed and passed on that would be great

Vice Commodore’s Comments
I would like to say Hat’s Off and Thank You to all the Board Members and Membership for coming to th e Island over the las 4-5 weeks and giving a helping hand with all of the Harbor and Grounds, Tree cutting, Club house and Capital projects; all hands on deck has really helped out. It looks like the Garage, Walkways and Seawall projects should be completed by opening weekend. Thank You to All!! Save the date: The 2024 NCYC Commodore Ball will be February 3, 2024, at Marriott Auburn Hills. Further details will follow as we progress. We had another successful TIPS Training Class on May 7, 2023, at HPYC. We had 33 NCYC members attend the class. This addition to our TIPS certified members should help us accomplish our goal of Board and Flag members and the Weekday Managers and ODs certified.
Thank You for your support.

Correspondence
1) Request from Clubhouse Manager, Colleen Braun, regarding July 4 th Weekend:
Hi Mark, Thought I might mention something to you regarding July 4. On the week day manager’s schedule, the 4 th is on Tuesday. So this means, Sunday night and Monday will be late, and maybe the 4 th night too. Years ago, people left for the fireworks but the last few years this has not happened. I would take that week but I’m asking for extra help on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. If you could bring this to the Board, I would appreciate it. Last year was terrible and I’m not looking for much, just a commitment from some people. There is no way a new couple could do this, but help a night would be appreciated. Please let me know what you and the Board can come up with. Thanks Colleen.
2) Request from Member#1 for permanent reduction in work requirement from 16 hours to 8 hours, due to medical reasons and advanced age.
Motion: Philip Maniaci to approve member request. Second: Shelley Sweier. Motion Carried
3) Request from Member#2 for permanent exemption from complete work requirement due to medical reasons and advanced age.
Motion: Mark Javery to approve member request. Second: Al Douglas. Motion Carried
