APRIL 2014 BEACON

According to theU.S. ArmyCorps of Engineers the lakes are forecast to begin rising. See theexcerpt below fromApril 3, 2014: LakesSuperior andMichigan-Huronare15and13 inches, respectivelyabove their levelsof a year ago. LakesSt. Clair andErieare10and6 inches, respectively, above what theywereat this time last year, whileLakeOntario is near its level of a year ago. LakesSuperior andMichigan-Huronare predicted to climb3 and5 inches, respectively, over thenext 30 days. LakesSt. Clair andEriearebothprojected to rise 4and5 inches, respectively in thenextmonth, whileLakeOntariowill rise 8 inches. Ice build-up in the connectingchannelscan cause significant water level fluctuations, especially inLakeSt. Clair.

This year wehavehada record cold, wet winter with ice cover on the lakes andheavy snow (precipitation) upnorth. Let’s hope that snowmelt increases the lake levels through the summermonths this year as projected.

Spring is hereand very soonwewill be visiting the Island tobeginwork getting ready toopen the club for the season. I for one can’t wait.

See youon the Island.
