August 2023 Beacon

North Channel Yacht Club August 2023 Beacon

From The Flag It is hard to believe we are only days from our September General Membership Meeting and the kids are headed back to school. North Channel Yacht Club has been vibrant with activities and the number of members on the island continues to be very strong for the year. Thanks to all the members and guests that have participated in all the great activities this year. The chair people did an outstanding job, and they were all very successful. We still have a lot more activities to come in September with Kid’s Campout, Smoke on the Water, Commodore’s golf outing and the Polish dinner. Make sure to come out and attend, you don’t want to miss any of the fun. I would like to thank our Fleet Capitan’s, Shelly and Gary Schroka for three great rendezvous. We had some rough weather, but it didn’t stop us from having a great time and great camaraderie. We would like to thank all the OD’s and weekday managers for stepping up and doing an outstanding job. It is a very large commitment to keep our great club going and making all our visitors feeling welcome. A special thanks to the Nominating Committee for putting together a very strong slate of candidates for the 2024 Board of Directors and Flag. The Board and Flag would like to thank all the candidates that have stepped forward for the election on Haul Out weekend and looking forward to the results on October 7 th . Thank you to all our members for their dedication in making this the greatest club on the lake. See you at the September General Membership Meeting. Your Flag,

A Message from Chaplain Mark Javery

August Chaplain Notes Since the last Beacon was published many members of our NCYC family have experienced the heartache of the loss of a loved one and others have faced serious health concerns.

Member Frank Zrepskey passed away on July 22, 2023. Keep his wife Bea and their entire family in your prayers.

Member Archie Archibald passed away on July 26, 2023. Keep his wife Patti, Shelly & Gary Schroka, Jill & V/C Rick Romatz, Tracey & Jim Henkel and the rest of Archie’s family in your prayers. Both of these families need our prayers at this time of loss and mourning. We have two widows that now face tough decisions while grieving. Former member of NCYC and the Chrysler Yacht Club Leroy Klicki passed away August 6, 2023. Members Dave Klicki and Joanne Hilden are mourning the loss of their brother and members Jennifer and James Robertson are mourning the loss of their grandfather. Keep them in your prayers. I pray each and every member in our club family during times of sickness and loss are shown and know their NCYC family’s genuine care and support.

Keep Ron Braun and his wife Colleen in your prayers. We are thankful for a successful procedure on Ron’s spine and a good pathology report, but a long recovery is anticipated, and he still has pain control concerns. Pray for his inpatient rehabilitation to go well and that he has a speedy recovery. Continue to pray for P/C Denise Huntley and husband Tom as her treatment for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia continues. So far Denise has tolerated the treatment protocol well, but this is a long road she is on and we need to pray that our God will strengthen her on this journey. Continue to pray for Linda Pagel and P/C Randy. Linda also has a long journey as she recovers from a broken femur and the procedure that repaired it. He loves Me Most of All

When I begin to feel alone Or when the shadows fall…. I talk to Jesus one on One; He loves me most of all.

When trouble knocks upon my door And tries to stay awhile… Jesus comes to shelter me; He brings my heart a smile.

Every time I start to cry Or feel I can’t go on… Jesus holds me in his arms; He keeps my spirit strong.

Vice Commodore’s Comments

I would like just to say Hat’s off to this Board and the Membership for all the well supported and well attended Events and Rendezvous. I t’s been a great year so far this year so far and Kids Day this coming up weekend is forming up to be the same. Shelby has well over 100 Kids signed up at this time. Again, I want to mention Hat’s off to the group of guys that assembled the Pergola in front of the First Mates Boatique, led by a familiar group Sweier, Lutz, and Braun; they did an awesome job as usual! Thank You to the whole team. Save the date: The 2024 NCYC Commodores Ball will be February 3, 2024, at Marriott Auburn Hills. Further details will follow as we progress.

Thank You for your support.

Rear Commodore’s Comments

Short and sweet. I thought the opening overall went fantastic. Big thank you to everyone who contributed. A special thanks to Sweier and Braun for installing the new garage door.

Correspondence

Following received from Members:

1. Mark, per our discussion, I am writing to you regarding a situation that requires attention. June 9-11, 2023, was my weekend to manage as OD. We had two Members staying on the second floor in rooms 2 and Sam's room. On June 10, one of the Members made me aware there was a person roaming the second floor. I immediately went to the second floor to find out who it was. I noticed room 3 door was closed but not locked. When I opened the door, to my surprise, someone was staying in the room. It turns out the Member had been using the room for some time. When approached, he said weekday managers gave him permission. We were not informed of this when transferring responsibility to me. Sunday morning, I asked if he was checking out and that I would need the room key. He said he didn't have a key. I told the Member he cannot use rooms without requesting permission from the OD. He immediately packed up and left the island. This Member ’s boat has been at the Club for weeks. Not sure why he doesn't use it. The whole situation made it uncomfortable for the Members staying on the second floor and myself. A reminder to Members about policies and procedures might help.

Regards,

PC Jim Angers

2. A Member requested permanent relief and a reduction in work hours for personal reasons. Motion: Philip Maniaci to approve the request. Second: Christa Betts. Motion Carried

3. Received from a Member and read by Christa Betts:

Can you please read this at the next board meeting? I just received an email regarding the Lake St. Clair outing and Shelly is requesting that we mail her the checks for the outing. I would like to know why we do not have a more secure way to pay for things of this nature? Systems such as Google Pay and Venmo are two examples. From what I understand, these are extremely simple to set up. This can be used not just for outings, but for weekend events (i.e. steer roast, smoke out, etc.), and annual dues. And I am sure I am not the only Member expressing this concern. Even the US Post Office doesn’t recommend sending checks through the mail anymore.

Thanks – keep up the good work. Greg Brigman

Clubhouse

Well, the Clubhouse is still there. I’m grateful to the Membership: First, letting me know when there are issues in the Clubhouse and second, in some cases taking the initiative to address issues in the Clubhouse as they present themselves. Of course, there are going to be issues throughout the season, and I appreci ate everyone’s engagement in letting me know and addressing them.

We have a couple of issues ongoing, that we’re continuing to work through:

• We’ve engaged a contractor to update our internet connectivity. The work, unfortunately, is ongoing. The most significant bit of progress is that our Point-of-Sale registers behind the register have not had issues maintaining their internet connections. However, contrasting with that progress is that our internet connectivity for the Membership still needs to be addressed. In particular, the connectivity in the Harbor and Robeson is poor and bandwidth is not reliable. I continue to work with our IT Officer and Contractor to move this work forward and hope to have this to a resolution and acceptable steady state before the end of the month. • The Big Pig – As a requirement for our generator, we have doubled the capacity of our propane tank at the mainland dock from 500 lbs to 1000 lbs. Cummins, the generator vendor visited the island on 7/18/23 to perform their testi ng. As a result of that testing, we’ve identified an issue with the gas pressure coming across the channel. As a result, we are not getting full capacity on our generator currently. There have been preliminary discussions on what can be done to improve pressure for the generator. None of them are particularly palatable or inexpensive. So, we’re going to need to do some more homework to assess what we can do to address this issue. • Finally, I’ll be scheduling another pest control treatment, date to be T BD but I will be cognizant of event schedules and rendezvous and coordinate with the weekday OD.

Terry Steinmacher

Harbor & Grounds

If you have been to the island or may have seen some pics online you are aware that the trees on the Robinson that where topped are coming in beautiful and our shade is returning rather quickly, so much so that we have decided to continue with the topping of the trees. Next one up is the first willow on the river closest harbor.

I would like to give a shout out to Jenn Grant Robertson for their generous donation of a new basketball net, basketballs, and football for all to enjoy.

I’m not sure if anybody has been paying attention to our new once lit buoys out in the river. Both lights have been removed from the buoys and what I am being told is that they have been hit and the lights come off and returned to us. If we decide to relight the buoys, we are going to have to figure out a better way to secure them. I will be looking for a few helpers once again to help with cleaning the BBQ’s and getting them back into tip top shape so your BBQ experience at the island will be second to none. Please keep a look out for the fan out. Also please let someone know if you notice a shortage of full BBQ tanks so we can get them refilled in a timely manner.

Clubhouse

Well, the Clubhouse is open and has survived the Fitting Out and ABYA weekends without too much in the way of new issues. There are some items that need tending to and this list is not intended to be all inclusive: • Internet connectivity and balancing bandwidth for the PoS registers and the Wi-Fi. Further discussion on this subject later in the agenda. • Hot Water for the Manager’s Apartment Shower - *Update – fixed! • Right-sizing our propane storage in light of the requirements of the new generator. • We need a new fan for behind the bar to allow for air flow so that our bartenders don’t sweat to death. • The light fixture in the foyer that leads out to the flags (where the medicine cabinet is) is not working. • The TV in room six has no signal. • And new addition to the list: we have a toilet in the men’s room that acts as a rocking chair that needs to be reset to the floor. • Repairs to a variety of kitchen appliances (freezers, refrigerators, and ovens) oh my. • Replacing a failed freezer with a new freezer. • Fire safety inspection was performed to review our fire suppression and alarm solutions. • Repairs and improvements to the footings for the tables to reduce the risk of damaging the new carpet. It’s worth mentioning that, at least when I was at the club last, the new carpet seems to be holding up fine to the initial wear and tear that the club and its membership can put to it. I’d also like to take a moment to recognize the folks that were working the week leading up to the fitting out weekend with my apologies to anyone I neglect to mention: Shelly and John Sweier, P/C Blackburn, Marie Pepin, Colleen Hall and P/C Hall. I am grateful for their efforts and guiding hand when it came to getting the clubhouse ready for the season and the opening weekend. We also got quite a bit done between the May board meeting and tonight. Some highlights:

Harbor & Grounds

1) I would like to thank Ron Braun and Mike DeNeve (Mikey) for lending a helping hand with the replacement of approx. 300’ of decking boards throughout the island the week of 5/29/23. 2) Hopefully everyone has had a chance to see the new yard lights that were replaced on the west side of the island, I also have (2) fixtures ordered for the east side of the island. Once they come in, they will also be replaced. 3) We still have approx. 250 bags of dirt that is supposed to be delivered to the island on 6/8/23 we are keeping our fingers crossed that that happens. Once the dirt is on the island, we will be looking for a team to help spread where needed. Keep a lookout for the shout out for help.

4) I will be looking into getting us a couple of outdoor heaters for the patio since mother nature cannot make up her mind on what season we are in

5) We will be getting our weed control for the harbor the week of 6/12. Was told it should be on Thursday 6/15. Will keep everyone posted once I know for sure.

6) With all the burning of the tree trimmings this year our fire pit is going to get some much needed attention. Stay tuned for that project update.

7) As always if you see something that needs attention, please bring it to my attention so we can give the issue some attention.

Members of the Month

July - Debra Jacott Debra Jacott is being recognized as a July Member of the Month for her many efforts assisting weekday managers. In July, she stayed on the island an entire week helping John and Shelley Sweier with as many as 25 boats. Without a co-manager, the week would have been very difficult if not for her help. Her willingness to help where needed made the week manageable and the visitors had a great time. She represented our Club with enthusiasm and worked many long hours. She is deserving of this recognition for the many times she has offered to help when needed – and especially the week in July! August - Shelly and Gary Schroka Thank you for the time and effort you put into our three rendezvous!!! You are absolute Rockstar's!!! All of you hard work and planning is greatly appreciated by all.

HIGH FIVE The North Channel Yacht Club (NCYC) Board of Directors would like to recognize Doug Betts with a High Five! Special thanks to Doug for his quick response and superb welding skills to repair a broken weld on a steel piling on D-Dock prior to a very busy week. Doug’s quick action resolved a potential safety issue and eliminated the concern so that the dock could be used by boaters. Thank you, Doug, we appreciate your quick action and everything you do for the club.
