Well this is my last Beacon. I hope all you members have enjoyed the articles this year. It’s been an honor being able to keep you updated throughout the year on all the great things that have happened in this wonderful club. I‘ve been amazed at how much content I’d get sent to me each month from everything that went on - the fun really never stops at NCYC! I want to give special thanks to Commodore Don Vanover, V/C John Anderson and R/C Brian McEvoy for all their great articles. In addition, thanks to Art Brooks, Archie Archibald, Cathy Criner , Sue Reiss and Kim Miedema for their great articles, pictures and content. Starting in January, Brent Malik will be your new Publications Director and Beacon editor. I have been in contact with Brent and he is very excited about taking over. There’s no doubt he’s going to do a great job, so please support him with the wonderful kindness you gave me. I hope everyone has a joyful Christmas. I encourage you to remember the real reason for Christmas and attend the Christmas Eve service at your local church. And have a safe and Happy New Year.
Only 16 weeks to launch!
Greg Brigman NCYC Publications Director
What a year! With team work, volunteerism, and participation, 2013 will go down in the record books as a very successful year. Through the many personal donations, the fundraising efforts of our Ancient Mariners, First Mates and the selling of the island cottage, we wrote a check to our lending institution in the amount of forty nine thousand dollars. This was over and above our monthly debt obligations and has reduced our re-payment term to four years or less. I’d like to thank my Board of Directors and fellow Flag Officers for their determination and hard work in the affairs of North Channel, thereby ensuring the fiscal success of our great club. It was a pleasure working with all of you as you
made it an enjoyable year. Thank you Diane French, for your nine years of service to NCYC and your adaptability to the many hats you wore, along the way. You will be missed. Thank you to Greg Brigman for your service and for taking on a new responsibility this year with publications. You answered the call and delivered a fine product. Thank you Kim Miedema for filling a void this year. You not only handled the activities, you continued to photograph just about everything around us, and with John Greening, managed to help out in the marketing of NCYC to nonmembers. Thank you Greg and Yvonne Murray for volunteering to be our Fleet Captains. You two brought the fun to the rendezvous’, through your positive energy and creativity. A great time was had by all who attended. On November 9 th we held the November General Membership Meeting at Barrister Gardens with the main purpose of presenting the 2014 budget. The proposed budget was presented by Treasurer Chuck Stroh, outlining the revenues and expenses of the upcoming year. I’m happy to report that the membership present and your Board of Directors, support the proposed budget for 2014. Congratulations and best of luck to John Anderson, Commodore 2014. Help John and Beverly celebrate the 2014 year, by attending the Commodore’s Ball, January 18 th at the Concorde Inn. I must thank my wife, Barb, for her food coordination for the work parties, keeping my calendar organized, and supporting my every step along the way. You put smiles on many faces all year long. You are my anchor! In closing, Thank you for allowing me to serve as your Commodore. I look forward to next year, serving as your ABYA delegate and to all of the new and continued friendships of North Channel.
Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year! Don
Thanksgiving has come and gone by now with frost on the pumpkin, snow on the ground and me wishing that I could hibernate till Spring. No such luck with that wish so I’ll just have to buck up and face this winter of ours and keep telling myself that the lake levels will be that much better next year. The General Membership meeting went well and I’d like to thank everyone that attended. I try to encourage participation in Club events but these membership meetings are something a bit more important. It’s the part of our activities that moves this Club forward with the decisions that we make and an interest in the business at hand. this year! this particular meeting, the 2014
budget was presented and approved by the membership in attendance. I’m proud of what we put forth in that it contained a well-thought out and balanced budget for next year. We’re continuing to work on our debt reduction and are still able to take care of necessary projects and maintenance issues with cash on the table. The teamwork between the Finance committee, Flag and Board and the Membership could not be better! Thank you All. Normally mention of our Board Meetings is not brought up much. The December meeting is one that is short and sweet. Not much business to speak of and what there is to address is usually dispatched quickly. It is not without emotion though. The Changing of the Guard occurs here with the out-going and incoming Directors in attendance. My congratulations and respect goes to those that have stepped up to carry on the business of this Club. My thanks for a job well-done to those leaving their positions after putting so much of their time into what has needed to be done. I would be remiss in not mentioning our Commodore Don Vanover and his lovely Lady Barb. They’ve both done so much in moving NCYC in the right direction …. Socially and Financially. I can only hope that next year I can say that Beverly and I are as successful in doing what’s right for the Club. Thank you Don and Barb! So now we’re sort of facing a lull in the action, so to speak, as far as Club activities are concerned. Our Grand Lady is winterized and tucked away. Our boats covered and stored. I want to wish good health and success to each and every one of you. Keep your families close and enjoy with them the Holidays that are fast approaching.
,
Oh …. One last thing. I hope that you’ve kept an opening in your date book on January 18 th . We would like to entertain you at my Commodore’s Ball that evening. Beverly and I would be honored with your attendance to that event.
Let The Good Times Roll, V/C John Anderson
,
Renee and I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We look forward to our upcoming traditions as a time to spend quality time with family and friends. Thanksgiving dinner with a 36 pound turkey cooked the traditional way in the oven along with a 13 pound deep fried turkey at the McEvoy house, then off on Sunday for our annual trek to Applegate, MI to cut our own Christmas tree with a stop along the way in Lexington for a Whimpie burger and some penny candy from the General Store. Then the ABYA ball on December 7 th , Christmas caroling cruise, a trip to the movie theatre to see The Hobbit part II, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Years Eve to close out the year. We all seem to stay as busy as ever.
As an follow up to my previous articles this year, I wanted to update everyone on the current Lake St. Clair level. As you can see from the chart below, lake levels in Lake St. Clair continue to be higher than last year.
Lakes Superior and Michigan-Huron are 12 and 13 inches, respectively, above their levels of a year ago. Lakes St. Clair , Erie, and Ontario are 11 , 6, and 12 inches, respectively, above what they were at this time last year . Over the next month, the Lakes Superior and Michigan-Huron are forecasted to decline 3 and 2 inches, respectively. The levels of Lakes St. Clair, Erie and Ontario are predicted to each fall 2, 2, and 3 inches, respectively, during the next 30 days. Winter is fast approaching and as that white stuff starts falling, just remember we still need to have large snow amounts particularly up north to keep our lake levels on the rise. I enjoyed representing the club as Rear Commodore this year, and I am looking forward to a great year in 2014.

NOTES FROM CHAPLAIN ART BROOKS
Since our last newsletter, Greg Murray’s brother, David, passed away on October 22 after struggling with ALS for some time. The Romatz family suffered their loss on November 2. The 93 year old mother of Gloria and grandmother of PC Rick passed away. Please remember these members and their families in your prayers.
A thought for this Holiday Season follows
“A Letter”
A letter is the warmest way bid a friend the time of day, A keep-in-touch that brings the smiles, Across the very longest miles. And what a wealth of strength and hope, Is tucked inside an envelope, Reminding loved ones that you are, At least in heart, not very far. In no country, state or camp, The wealth beneath a postage stamp, For memories that never age, Are written down upon each page. And though it’s nice to telephone, One of the sweetest pleasures known, Are moments shared in thoughts we send, …….That can be read, and read again.

Welcome, here we are in the 11th hour. It was a great year. So far so good. Thanks to Rich Goodman for the work on the water project. Everything went smoothly. Still have 2 Fins in the water. Pat Carroll indicated that they will be coming out soon. We had an opportunity to go down to Ohio for our last rendezvous of the year. We visited 5 Yacht Clubs while we were there and I have to say they treated us like royalty. They bought us drinks and supplied food. They went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. We need to do a better job of welcoming incoming rendezvous to our island. We have some upcoming events that we need to have participation in. First the ABYA Commodore Ball in December and VC John Anderson's ball in January. Thank you to Don Reiss for a great job at the work parties, everything went like clock work. It will make it easier to open up the club next year. Good evening and thank you all for your attendance tonight. I feel that this is one of the most important meetings that we have as a Board during the year in that we authorize the expenditures of our Members' investment in the Club for next year. Ask your questions... do your due diligence. We and the Finance Committee are presenting you with a good balanced budget to live by in 2014. Please make sure that when we finalize and vote to authorize this that it's something we'll be proud to present to our Members on Saturday night. I just wanted to thank everyone who came out to the work parties. A lot of people jumped in to help close the club. Tonight I will be presenting the Forward Planning report. I just want to mention the members of that committee, Commodore Don Vanover, Ed Romatz, Ron Kemp, Don Ruma, Jeff Edgerly, Kevin Verkest and Ron Latowski. Thank you.
Financial Report
Treasurer, Chuck Stroh
I sent out the 2014 budget to the directors, asking that you each look at your own report. The directors had a chance to discuss their individual reports. The directors agreed that their 2014 budget looked good. Thanks to the Finance Committee for all of their hard work. There was a lot of interaction and good comments. There was a payment made of $45,300 towards the debt reduction today.
Motion: Moved by VC John Anderson to accept the financial report. Seconded by Diane French.

ABYA Report
P/C Tom McHugh
Our ABYA dues are due by November 4th. PC Rick Romatz is now the Rear Commodore of ABYA. The ABYA Commodore Ball is December 7, 2013 at 6:00 pm at the Enchantment Hall. PC Rick Romatz will be hosting the ABYA Spring Rendezvous in Midland. The theme this year will be horse racing. ABYA is requesting to once again have their Spring Dinner Dance at the NCYC clubhouse on May 31, 2014. The same rules will apply as last year, pay for the first night and get the second night free. Motion: Moved by PC Tom McHugh to host the ABYA Spring Dinner Dance at the NCYC clubhouse with the dockage discount. Seconded by Kim Miedema. Motion Carried. An ABYA meeting will be held on January 6, 2014 at Huron Pointe, this will be a 'Meet the Candidates' meeting. If we want to put an ad in the ABYA Safety Book, it will need to be done in the next 30 days. Motion: Moved by PC Tom McHugh to place an ad in the ABYA Safety Book. Seconded by Hugh Vestal. Motion Carried. Kim Miedema will prepare the ad.
Correspondence:
A letter was received by Danielle LaVeque (daughter of Dennis Biel) requesting a waiver of the initiation fee to rejoin the club. She stated that she was a Junior Member and has put in her work hours. She did not join at that time since she was thinking of moving out of state.
Motion: Moved by Greg Brigman to waive the initiation fee for Danielle LaVeque. Seconded by Bob Carnaghi.
Motion Carried.
I. CURRENT BUSINESS
Activities – Kim Miedema The thank you mentions for the Golf Outting did not get into the Beacon for October, it will be in the November Beacon.
Club House – Rich Goodman Thank you to everyone for a smooth closing. I would like to publicly say thanks to PC Hugh Vestal, he was my 'go to man' all year. The phone lines are closed down. Comcast has to stay active because it is an annual fee. The shower doors are finally installed in the Manager's apartment.
Harbor & Grounds – Don Reiss
NCYC Regular Meeting Minutes Page 4 of 6
The Port-A Potty and Waste Management were contacted and cancelled until the spring. A big thank you to all who turned out for the work parties. It was outstanding. I sent in a check for $200 for a permit for the weed control for next year.
Membership – Bob Carnaghi We now have 4 people on the waiting list. A discussion was held on the members that did not fulfill their work hours this year. Motion: Moved by Chuck Stroh to send out the 'Work or Pay' letters to those members. Seconded by Diane French. Motion Carried. Publications – Greg Brigman I need a picture of RC John and Bev Anderson for the Beacon ad for the Commodore Ball. We have only 12 people that receive the Beacon by mail. It is very costly to mail these Beacons, and I am suggesting that we stop the mailings. This was tabled until next year. I would also like to clean up the NCYC web site. I will be deleting some of the tabs that are not being used. Secretary – Diane French What a pleasure that it has been to be on the board. Thank you for your support. Just because I am not on the board, I will still be available to be on committees. I will be around to help in any way.
Supplies – Hugh Vestal No Report
Transportation – Pat Carroll The Fins will be coming out this week. Fin 1 is already in inside storage. We will start working on it next month. We have 18 boats in winter storage in the parking lot. Fleet Captain – Greg & Yvonne Murray Yvonne and I would like to thank the Flag and Board for all of your support this year. We had a successful year. Thanks to the Fleet Team for all of your help. Topic #2 - The 2014 budget was presented to the board. It was reviewed and a discussion was held. Kim Miedema wanted clarification on the need to purchase a generator. It was discussed that the generator was necessary in the event of a loss of power or low power in order to protect the investment of our refrigeration units from damage. It would also ensure the quality of the items stored in those units. NCYC General Membership Meeting Minutes Page 2 of 7
Hello and thank you for attending this very important meeting tonight.
We've had a wonderful year at North Channel, thanks to the generosity of our members, Ancient Mariners, First Mates and member participation. Through careful and deliberate actions from this board, and the afore mentioned generosity and involvement, we have successfully lowered our debt this year by $49,000.00, over and above our monthly debt obligations. What a year, WHAT A TEAM!
We brought in 25 new members and 5 junior's, we have a waiting list with four names on it. I could go on and on...
Tonight we will be presenting the 2014 budget and we look forward to any concerns and or questions you may have concerning the operation of our fine club.
But, before we go there... We must first recognize a few people who made this year special. Brendan Romatz began our year by carrying the American Flag to the Color Guard to be raised in showing our patriotism to our great nation and to announce the opening of NCYC for the 2013 season. Thank you Brendan.
Another shout-out to Steve and Diane Marten for the beautiful Commodore sign. A true work of art.
I'd like to say thanks: To Greg Brigman for your service to this Club, and for your willing to adapt and accept a new role this year as our publication director. You did an amazing job. To Kim Miedema, for filling a vacancy on the Board and jumping in with all her zest and energy and... Finally... Diane French for her never ending dedication and nine years of service to North Channel. I'd also like to thank Sue Reiss for taking on the Board Recorder duties. Sometimes a difficult job in ciphering all that is said at our meeting and transposing a lot of banter into recognizable speech. Thank you Greg and Yvonne and team for being our Fleet Captains: A lot of hard work with great results. A book commemorating this year's rendezvous' was given to Greg and Yvonne in appreciation of their hard work.
Thank you Directors for all of your commitment to make a difference here at NCYC. I look forward to working with you next year.
Thank you to our newly elected directors, Brian Malik, Brent Malik, Frank Corcoran and Randy Pagel for stepping up to the challenge of guiding our club into the future.
Thank you Chuck Stroh, Rear Commodore 2014 for your continued devotion to North Channel.
Thank you Jill and PC Rick for Kid's Day and the Kid's Campout and for all you two do!
NCYC General Membership Meeting Minutes Page 3 of 7
Thank you to all appointees, week managers, weekend OD's, event planners, food servers, cooks and clean-up crew's, members of our many committees and a huge thank you to YOU, the membership for your support.
Thank you to PC Tom McHugh for all of your efforts serving as our ambassador to ABYA.
Thank you Barb for standing behind me All the Way, I love you.
In closing, four years ago Barb and I were considering stepping away from the business of the club, after serving my three years as a director, but were encouraged by many of you here in this room tonight to place my name on the ballot for Rear Commodore. Well, here we are!
I'm looking forward to serving as the NCYC delegate for the ABYA, starting in January and to serving North Channel as Past Commodore.
Thank you

Our own PC Rick Romatz will be Rear Commodore of the ABYA this coming year. PC Rick and Jill will be hosting the annual ABYA Spring rendezvous that will be held in Midland on March 7,8 & 9 2014. The theme next year will be 'Horse Racing'. The ABYA Dinner Dance will be held on December 5, 2013 at The Enchantment Hall. The tickets are $67.50 per ticket. Harbor & Grounds – Don Reiss No report
Membership – Bob Carnaghi We have 4 people on the waiting list. We brought in a lot of people this year, but we must keep the membership drive going. Looking forward to another great summer at NCYC. Publications – Greg Brigman Thanks to the membership, I appreciate all of the support I received this year. Thanks to Commodore Don for a great year. Five years ago I started on the board as the Board Recorder. I have seen a lot of conversations, arguing and debates at the meetings in the past, but this year there were no fights or arguing. This was a great board this year. Secretary – Diane French I know we have a lot to cover tonight, so I promise to keep this short. Because this is the LAST time I will have the opportunity to speak to this membership as a Board of Director, I just want to say THANK YOU for those who have supported me the last nine

years. A special thanks to P/C Jim Whyard for his persistence to get me to run that first time. I started with Publications for 5 years, Activities for one year, then Supplies and this last year Secretary. I would like to say what a pleasure it has been working with this Flag and Board this year. I think we should ALL give a SPECIAL thanks to Commodore Don & Barbara Vanover for making it such a FUN year. If anyone has any thoughts of running for office, I highly recommend it. You will get so much more out of it than you can possibly imagine. You only get out of this club what you put into it. I saw a sign at the Leader Dog for the Blind In Rochester that reads,"Volunteers are unpaid, not because they are worthless but because they are priceless." So, as my last act, on behalf of my fellow officers, I would like to make a motion to double the pay checks of ALL of the officers. For me, most of you have heard my story, the opportunity to serve on this Board came at the perfect time in my life. My husband had just passed away and at the same time I lost my job. Being on this Board gave me my "purpose in life" back. You have no idea what you have done for me. And for that , I can't thank you enough.
Supplies – Hugh Vestal
I'm sure you don't want to hear how many bottles you drank this year. It was a lot! End of report. Looking forward to serving you next year.
Transportation – Pat Carroll It was a great year, and I want to thank everyone who helped me. End of report.
Fleet Captain – Greg & Yvonne Murray
It was a great year. Thanks to everyone who came to the rendezvous' and helped out. Thanks to Commodore Don and Barb for everything. Please support Ian and Marie as your Fleet for next year.

Chuck Stroh wanted to make everyone aware that we went to Ohio for our last rendezvous of the year. We visited 5 Yacht Clubs down there and we were treated like kings.
