FEBRUARY 2019 BEACON
The piece of Scrimshaw on this month’s cover harkens back to a day long gone by, and I always find myself immersed in the lore of the sea when I come across such an artifact. For most of 17 years of my younger life I spent roughly 360 days a year aboard various sailboats, that’s nearly every single day of every single year for 17 years. I sailed them all over the Great Lakes, the Atlantic Ocean, and all up and down the Antilles, the West Indies in the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico. Many long days and nights offshore I thought of the men who sailed these wooden square riggers as I practiced marlinspike seamanship, (the art of knot tying) and navigation, (long before LORAN and GPS we used paper charts, a watch, compass and a sextant). Go back and have a 2nd look at the detail, and imagine having so much time out of sight of land that you can scratch out a piece like this, one needle scratch at a time. It’s said that long distance sailing is enduring long hours of boredom interspersed with moments of sheer terror. Anyone who’s ever crossed the West wall of the Gulf Stream at night in the North Atlantic will understand. Take the worst Lake Huron storm you’ve ever seen and put it on top of 40’ rolling waves that fetch ¼ mile apart. These waves are born off the coast of Africa and have 3,000 miles to get bigger and bigger as they cross the Atlantic. What fun. And yet, the men who sailed these leaky, squeaky, wooden, wind powered ships, put out for months and even years at a time, small wonder they learned all sorts of crafty things. Without them, none of us would be here, and so, my favorite British Naval toast wraps around this picture of history. I acquired this piece at an art show. As soon as I saw it, I thought of a Beacon cover, I hope you enjoy it. Blue Skies Following Seas, Ron
First and foremost, I would like to thank everyone who was involved in making the 2019 Commodore’s Ball such a success! A lot of hours were put forth by many members in true NCYC fashion and it certainly showed. I would also like to thank everyone who took the time to celebrate this special event with Marie and I, and we hope that it will be an evening that you will remember. With such an active and dedicated membership helping make 2018 a success, P/C Randy Pagel had many to consider for the 2018 award recipients. I think we all recognize their contribution and share in congratulating them on their award: Our Fleet Captains, Ken Lipowski and Julie Delauter exemplify the Spirit of NCYC. Their enthusiasm and character certainly showed during each of the 2018 Rendezvous. Thank-you for such wonderful Rendezvous outings! The 2018 Hatzenbuhler recipients to Rex and Patti Oliver and Donny and Rana Shepperson. Their contribution undoubtedly made the impossible, possible. What a monumental task they completed. The club house has never looked better. Thank- you for your countless hours on preserving and beautifying our club house!
Congratulations to all couples on your awards and recognition, well deserved!!
NCYC Secretary Frank is hard at work putting the weekend work schedule together. Communication is vital now! If you are an OD and have a team assembled – share the information. As members, please communicate with Frank your preferred work weekend. Let’s communicate now to avoid any confusion so that we have ample coverage – every weekend – all season. Ron Braun is working on assembling the Weekday Manager schedule. Currently we have three open weeks. If you or a team of members are interested in taking a week, please reach out to Ron at crbraun10@comcast.net . The available weeks are June 2-7, June 23-28, and July 28-August 2. Please encourage friends interested in joining the club to contact us now. The Board prefers to conduct the interviews and hold the vote early in the year; allowing new members to be included in the annual roster, and introduced at the May general membership meeting. Stay Warm, Commodore Ian
“Oh, What a Night” Congratulations and thank you to Commodore Ian and Lady Marie for planning and hosting a fantastic evening at the Commodores Ball. This is our premier event of the year and the kick off to the rest of the years events to come. Job well done. As you may well imagine picking the recipient of the Hatzenbuhler and Spirit Awards at times can be difficult, there are so many members that give of their time and talents. Past Commodore Randy and Lady Linda made three great and well deserving choices. Congratulations goes out to Ken Lipowski and Julie Delauter for being awarded the Spirit Award. While performing the duties of Fleet Captain they planned and executed the clubs rendezvous. This brought members out to experience camaraderie and enjoy traveling to different ports together. Congratulations to Don and Rana Shepperson and Rex and Pattee Oliver for being awarded the Hatzenbuhler Award. Right from the beginning of the building siding and trim project, it was evident that we needed someone with experience to run this job. Don and Rex stepped forward to take on the responsibility and with the help of a few other members they completed this job in time for opening weekend. Something tells me that they and their families have been involved in many projects over the past years.
Check inside this Beacon for this year’s calendar of events. Not only can you plan your summer fun, you can also plan on what weekends you can make it out to the elite brigades and work parties, also there are still openings for the week OD positions.
Regards, V / C Bill

Commodore Ian and his Lady Marie launched the NCYC year in outstanding fashion! The Commodore’s Ball was an absolute delight. Everything from the décor, ceremony, food, entertainment and, of course, the opportunity to stay connected with fellow members, made the evening a great success. Congratulations to the 2018 Member of the Year winners Don and Rana Shepperson and Rex and Pattee Oliver. Their contribution to refreshing the appearance of our Grand Old Lady and the appreciation of the members for their dedication and hard work cannot be over stated. Congratulations also to the 2018 Spirit Award winners Fleet Captains Ken Lipowski and Julie DeLauter. The recognition is well deserved. The 2018 rendezvous were outstanding! Please watch for email messages from the Board regarding spring projects and OD and work schedules. These next weeks will pass quickly. The Club Secretary, Frank Corcoran will need everyone's help to put together the weekend work schedule which is always a challenge. Also, we need to prepare ourselves as early as possible for replacing the docks and walkway removed to accommodate the first 100' of seawall replacement. It is going to require many hands and a lot of heaving lifting to complete the project in time for opening weekend. In the meantime, winter seems to have finally arrived with frigid temperatures, ice jams in the St. Clair river, airport closures and the like. Please everyone stay safe and reach out to your "extended NCYC family" if you need any assistance.

As far as our members are concerned, we have not suffered any losses in January. We did receive notice that a past member, Beata Kehrig, wife of Don Kehrig passed away on January 28, 2019. The Kehrigs were also members of Clinton River Boat Club. Our condolences to the family. Mary Stackpoole is still very ill. Please remember her in your prayers. Tom is receptive to receiving calls, as far as keeping in touch. They have been receiving meals as a result of the Meal Train. The freezer is full at this point. Notification to resume the practice will come when the cupboard is bare.
Below is a thought for starting out the New Year –
At the sound of the tolling midnight bell a brand new year will begin. Let’s raise our hopes in a confident toast, to the promise it ushers in May your battles be few, your pleasures many, your wishes and dreams fulfilled. May your confidence stand in the face of loss and give you the strength to rebuild. May peace of heart fill all your days may serenity grace your soul. May tranquil moments bless your life and keep your spirit whole.
