Introducing “Burgee Travels”
Team Blackburn
Members, take your Burgee with you on your off season travels this year. Take a picture and send to Ron, for the Beacon. Let’s see where our Burgee goes… Thanks Ian.
Happy New Year to all and greetings from the new Bearhooks Southern Command Post here in Nokomis Florida, where we enjoy the last undeveloped stretch of saltwater beach in the entire country. That’s why we come here; nobody knows where it is. This month we see our Burgee Travels program has really taken off. We also have some beautiful responses to the Christmas Family Photo Request. FYI: for those FaceBook aficionados out there, I may go many weeks without logging into that thing. Sooooo if you have a photo to include in a Beacon, please email it to me, and remember to include some verbiage on where you are, and who you’re with, etc. Your Member Renewal package is due to arrive soon if you haven’t already received it. Remember to make any corrections to your boat, contact, and address information. This is where we get the information for the Roster so if there’s a correction to be made, now is the time to do it. This is also the time to fill in your preferred OD Work Weekend information, it’s in the packet too. PLEASE fill this out and return with your dues. Much grief, gloom, doom, sadness, chaos, tumult, anxiety, and despair can be avoided if we have your needs made known to us early on in the scheduling process.
Enjoy your Beacon.
Blue Skies Following Seas, Ron
Marie and I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and hope that you had a joyful Holiday Season with family and friends.
It is truly an honor to be the 2019 Commodore of such a prestigious Yacht Club that is steeped in history. I look forward to serving the club and I also know that it cannot be done alone. I would like to welcome Glenn Nixon as our Rear Commodore, Frank Corcoran as our Secretary, Tom Huntley as the Activities Director, John Sweier as the Club House Director, Leslie Leitch as the Fleet Captain, Brian Roath as the Board Recorder, and all the returning Flag members and Directors. I look forward to having the immediate Past Commodore, Randy Pagel, on the board to provide his wisdom and friendship. The First Mates and Ancient Mariners are also a vital part of the NCYC fabric. I look forward to working with Shelley Sweier, Archie Archibald and the members of these fine groups. I would also like to thank all the members that have stepped forward to organize and champion an event for the upcoming season. It is through these events that the NCYC spirit and camaraderie are solidified.
January 19 th , brings us to the Commodore’s Ball and it is surely approaching fast. There has been a lot of effort from a lot of members in the preparation of this premier event, and I am looking forward seeing everyone that will be in attendance. I am also looking forward to the winning announcements of P/C Pagel’s Spirit and Member of the Year awards. I know it will not be an easy decision. The Board of Directors meetings will be held at 7:00pm on the second Thursday of the month. The location of the meetings will be at Rosie O’Grady’s on 23 Mile Road. If you have any concerns or would like an item brought to the Boards attention, please feel free to attend or reach out to any Flag Officer or Board member. This is our club and everyone’s opinion counts.
Stay warm, Commodore Ian

Terri and I hope that all of you had a great Christmas Holiday with family and friends and we wish all of you the very best in 2019.
Our First big event of 2019 is just weeks away, NCYC’s Commodore’s Ball in honor of Commodore Ian Blackburn and his Lady Marie. We look forward to another successful year in 2019 with Commodore Ian at the helm. I hope if you are considering attending the Commodore’s Ball that you get your tickets soon. Remember that “Participation Brings Success to Organizations”. Once again, a big thanks to our immediate Past Commodore Randy Pagel and his Lady Linda for a great and successful year in 2018. The club house and grounds continue to look better than ever. Even though the club house and grounds have been closed for the winter, the work continues. The seawall project is in full force and looking good. Tom Altobelli director of Harbor and Grounds is collecting supplies and preparing for the pedestal project to take place on B and C dock in the spring. In closing I thank the NCYC members for the support you have given to Myself and Terri. I am looking forward to serving you as the Vice Commodore.
Regards, V/C Bill

Sheila and I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. We hope you all had a good holiday with family and friends. Congratulations to outgoing Commodore Randy Pagel and his wife Linda for a very successful 2018. Much progress was made in 2018 toward expanding our membership and building a very financially healthy Club. While it is always a team effort, Randy and Linda's leadership and tremendous time and effort invested this year has helped to put our Club on a path to success. Congratulations also to incoming Commodore Ian Blackburn and his wife Marie Peppin. I have no doubt Ian and Marie will lead our Club with care and diligence and further advance the outstanding results we all have accomplished in growing and improving our Club. Please everyone take the opportunity to attend the upcoming Commodores Ball to join in the celebration of our new Commodore and his Lady. Thank you to all the members leaving the board at the end of this year - P/C Pat Carroll, Scott Greenfelder and Tom Martin. Fleet Captains: Ken Lipowski and Julie Delauter, Board Recorder Greg Brigman and Harbormaster Leslie Leitch. Your hard work and contribution to the Club is greatly appreciated by all. Thank you also to incoming board members Tom Altobelli, Frank Corcoran, Tom Huntley and John Sweier for volunteering your time and skills for the betterment of the Club. I am honored to serve as your Rear Commodore for 2019. I look forward to working with the Board and Flag to keep the positive momentum going and continue to make NCYC the best Club on the Lake.
R/C Glenn Nixon
AMessage from Chaplain Art Brooks
Happy New Year to you all. I hope that the recent holidays were filled with joy, happiness and a sleigh full of toys. This season can be very trying and difficult on many families. My wish is that our NCYC family all weathered the holiday season in good shape. As of this writing, I am not aware of anyone who should be added to our Sick Call List or anyone who has passed away. I would like the members to continue to remember those who have been ill and mentioned in recent publications - . Please remember these members and all those who had illnesses this year and may still be recuperating.
“God’s Winter Wonderland” by Louise Pinkerton Fritz
Across the old red bridge we go And onward tracking through the snow O’er wintry, winding country lanes, Past cottages with frosted panes. Along the way a deer appears, Standing erect, with pointed ears. Upon a hill, ice-laden trees Leaning forward as on bended knees. And down the hill the children ride On sleighs ... its such a joyous sight! On country pond the skaters band; How great God’s Winter wonderland!

Secretary – Glenn Nixon Sent out an update for 2019 worker and weekend schedule. Made a PDF file of the 2019 calendar of events. Please look over for accuracy so it can be published. Supplies – Dale Hall Commodore read report. Wands, beer taps and lines have been cleaned and winterized. All liquor has been removed and secured. Liquor inventory is in line with last year. Transportation – Darryl Campbell FINS One and Two Have been pulled and put in their Winter resting place complimented by two coats of bottom paint executed by “Everything B Detailing” at a very reasonable fee. The boats will be shrink wrapped as soon as it stops raining and the winds subside to less than gale force. Fin 2 (with the blue top) During bottom painting it was brought to my attention that there was a rust spot above the water line on the port side. Upon inspection I was able, with not much effort to penetrate it with my pocket knife. This “silver dollar” sized hole will be patched in the spring. Fin3 (the Stanley) As there aren’t any special projects this fall plans are to decommission it the week following this meeting. The Board provided input as to if they worked or not. Members thought not to have met these obligations will be notified. Jim Gierlach was granted waiver for his work responsibilities for this year for health reasons. 2019 ABYA Application Commodore Pagel read the request to renew the annual dues for $125. A motion to renew was made by R/C Calihan, seconded by Scott Greenfelder. Motion Carried. Ron Draper asked if ABYA has by-laws? Can we get a copy? Do we have to reciprocate with all the clubs in ABYA and allow any ABYA Club Member unlimited access to NCYC? P/C Carroll commented we can limit the amount of times these Club’s Members can visit. Ron Draper suggested we write that into a Policy. NEW BUSINESS

Jeff Rose gets the award for Most Unique Burgee Travels Destination, so much so that his photos solved my monthly Cover Dilemma for January. Read his description here below.
Attached are a couple of Burgee photos taken during my current visit to Florida which included a trip to Ginnie Springs in Florida. The first picture was taken at the area in the Devil’s Ear underwater cave system where the visible light from the cave (cavern) opening is no longer visible. The second picture is about 400’ in the cave in an area call the lips. The Burgee is clipped to the “gold” line in the cave. The arrow in the left of the picture is a reference marker designating which direction leads to the entrance of the cave. In both locations, if my lights were out and the strobes were not firing; the cave is blacker than black. Both shots were taken with a Nikon D7000 and Nikkor 16mm lens.
