We had a great turnout for the ABYA dinner dance. P/C Pat Carroll did a great job facilitating this event for NCYC. Our Harbormaster, Leslie Leitch also did a good job docking all of our guests for the weekend. We also enjoyed a “Tiki Bar” weekend on Saturday, June 9th, thanks to the efforts of P/C Jim Angers. He had a one man band named Joe Allen who entertained us from 1-5 PM on the patio. Last weekend we held our first NCYC Club Rendezvous held at St. Clair Harbor Club. Our Fleet Captains Ken Lipowski and Julie Delauter did an excellent job keep us “watered” and fed for the entire weekend. They had great help from Glenn and Sheila Nixon, which made for a wonderful and fun time. We look forward to the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club Rendezvous which will be held on the weekend of July 28th. If you haven’t had a chance you need to come to the Club on Friday night and try our new Caterer for dinner. Our “Bald Chef Tom” has come up with some great dinners and you can still just order burgers, chicken tenders and fries if you like. There are still some members that have not picked up their new Roster and membership cards. Just ask the Bartender on duty to give you your Roster Package. Please make sure you do this soon so we can save on postage by not having to mail them to you. Also, please make sure you fly your NCYC Burgee so we can identify that you are a member of the Club. This makes it easier on the OD. Also, please remember to take you own trash back with you on your boat. We have been made aware of members not adhering to this policy. Time is sure flying by. I cannot believe that we are already in July! I guess this is partly due to the inevitable aging process, but I would much rather attribute it to the old saying that “time fly’s when you are having fun”. My take is that the rest of the membership is having fun as well as according to the preliminary bar sales figures, we are up approximately $3,700 in sales compared to previous years. So far, we have had a successful opening weekend, a well-attended ABYA dinner dance, a fun new event called “Tiki-Bar weekend”, an enjoyable Ladies week, and an awesome St. Clair rendezvous. We cannot say that we are boring or have nothing to do at NCYC! Thanks to all who were involved with organizing these events.Coming up next is our Kid’s Day weekend. I have been reminded to bring my swimsuit for the soaking of the Flag which is truly only made worthwhile by the smiles and laughter coming from the children who partake in this event. I know that July is a busy month for folks going on their planned boat trips, but when you are hanging around your home port there are a lot of events at NCYC to participate in. There will be the Big Smoke (Scotch & Cigars), Surf & Turf, Fourth of July, Ancient Mariners Horse Races and capping off the month with a Rendezvous at Grosse Point Yacht Club. Hope to see you at some or all of these events. Just a policy reminder about pets, as per the club policies “Pets must be on an 8ft or less leash and accompanied by their owner at all times. No pet shall be left unattended when off the boat or visiting the island for any reason. The pet owners are 100% responsible for their pets. The NCYC will not be held liable for any pet actions to others. Pets will not be allowed inside the Clubhouse, Boatique or any other building on the island. Time has gone by so fast and it's hard to believe June is almost over and July is just around the corner. A lot of fun and good memories were made this past month. Although most of the weekend parties take the spot light, there is still work being done to finish some uncompleted projects. There is always work to be done.

As I said in my last article the Anchor Bat Yachting Association spring dinner dance Kicked off the month of June. Good food, good music and a chance to visit with old friends and to make new ones.

Terri and I were not able to be on the Island for the Tiki Bar festivities, We hope everyone had a great time.

By all accounts another successful Ladies week was held in June. The ladies took over the club on June 10 thru the 14, hats off to First Lady Linda Pagel and crew.

The first Rendezvous of the year was just perfect. I congratulate our Fleet Captains Ken Lipowski and Julie Delauter along with their crew Glenn and Sheila Nixon on a job well done. The food and the Pub Crawl were great and most of the Karaoke singers that found their way back to Murphy's Saturday night were very entertaining. Did you notice I said most singers? Somebody needs to keep me away from the microphone. Thank you for a great time. Kids Day turned out to be awesome. Even with some threatening weather at hand the day turned out to be a good one. My favorite part was when the "Flag" was soaked. Those kids were having a ball. Shelby Romatz you did a great job along with your crew. You should be very proud. (future Commodore material). For those of you that will make it to the Cigar/whisky/wine and Surf & Turf, I hope you have great weather and a great time. Terri and I will not be able to make it we will be out of town. Hi Ladies: Ladies week was a lot of fun as always with great food, fun and activities. Thank you to all that helped to make it all happen and for those that volunteered to help make it such a success. Children’s day was a huge success thanks to Shelby Romatz and her team of helpers. From the 3 bounce houses, to the games, and the riding bull and the good food and great weather, fun talent show and all the raffle prizes!! And how cool was the surprise visit from the Clay Township Fire Boat exhibition!! Cindy Valentine and Fire Chief Rose were responsible for that surprise. The day couldn’t have gone better!! Thanks again to all that had anything to do with making kids day so special. There were so many generous donations, from food to prizes and more. Hello NCYC Members, This year Commodore Randy Pagel has established a position now known as Harbor Master. My duties are to take requests from other clubs and present them to the Board and Bridge for approval. They discuss the dates and incoming clubs by either approving the request or not based on our club’s activities for those days. The focus has been to promote clubs to come during the week more than the weekends, but there have been some approved incoming weekends that should not interfere with our members regarding available wells. Therefore, my other duty is to notify our members of those approved incoming boats in order for you to note them on your calendar and be aware of these outings. Commodore’s Comments Commodore, Randy Pagel This Saturday we start our traditional member work parties for the next two weekends. We still have a list of duties that are still required to make the island come alive. So please plan on coming out and lending a hand. Our new catering company for our Friday night dinners is called 4-C’s catering. The owner/chef’s name is Tom Comford known as the Bald Chef. The menu for Friday night, May 25 th will be: Choice New York Strip done your way for $16.95/Balsamic Grilled Chicken Breasts for $14.95/ 1/3 pound grilled Angus Burgers-Fresh never frozen for $9.95 w/fries/All beef hot dogs for $2.95/Chicken tenders-5 pieces for $5.95/French fries for $2.00. Exciting news……..P/C Denise Huntley along with P/C Bill Bauer are bringing back our Steer Roast for our “Fitting Out” weekend starting May 26 th . The First mates will be hosting an appetizer patio party before the General membership meeting. We then have our General Membership meeting which starts at 1:00 PM, where you will get a chance to meet our new members, followed by the Steer Roast. We have entertainment planned that evening. On Sunday we will continue with our opening Flag raising ceremonies with a complementary luncheon to follow. Please mark your calendars for Ladies Week. It will be starting Sunday June 10 th at 6:00 PM thru Thursday, June 14 th after lunch. Look for future Fan Outs for further information. Also, please make sure you fly your NCYC Burgee so we can identify that you are a member of the Club. Vice Commodore, Ian Blackburn This is our last weekend before the opening weekend and I would like to thank everyone around the board table for all the hard work everyone has done to get us to this point. I would also like to thank the membership for everything they have done. The projects this year have been aggressive but in true NCYC spirit they are getting accomplished. It’s time to go through the roster and refresh our memories putting names to faces. As a board, we need to read up on the club policies so that we can follow them and lead by example. Here’s to a good opening weekend and thanks for everyone’s hard work. Rear Commodore, Bill Calihan Things are looking good at the island. The last four weekends have been very productive. We still have a lot to finish. I know some of us have made trips out to the island during the week to get projects done and we will probably continue to do whatever it takes to get the job done. I also would like to complement our new Harbor and Grounds man Tom Altobelli and Membership Director Debbie Siwek. They both jumped in feet first and are doing a great job. far this year, with the majority coming from Oakland county. Efforts to restore the Water Quality Monitoring System.

The ban on farmers preventing placing unused fertilizer on frozen ground to dispose of it. Efforts to stop Canada from building a nuclear storage on the shores of Lake Huron. Discussed methods to control invasive species from entering the Great Lakes.

And Commodore Pagel recommended P/C Carroll bring this topic up a May GM meeting Correspondence All None CURRENT BUSINESS Activities – Tom Martin No report Clubhouse – Scott Greenfelder Tile floor will be finished this Saturday. Finally have the proper urinal which will be installed this Saturday. Cleaning crew coming in this Saturday to get kitchen steam cleaned so we’ll have to work around them. Concern was raised about the kitchen utensils being exposed during the cleaning. Scott assured all they will get thoroughly rinsed after the cleaning. Next week will need volunteers

during the week to transport workers back and forth to the island for extensive cleaning at clubhouse. Harbor & Grounds Tom Altobelli Lots of work still needs to be done on the grounds, but confident “we’ll get there”, even if not before opening weekend. Some main worries are getting the steel pilings covered in the harbor and the sprinkler system. The concept for asking for team leaders is working good at getting work done. Membership Debbie Siwek Debbie wanted to thank everyone for getting 18 new member interviews completed in 1 month. was sheared. Being that the drive on this boat is from a mid-60’s Owen Marine conversion no replacement parts are to be found. An alternative coolant supply system is now being configured. Fin Two (the Mackie with the blue top). The hull underwent an extensive visual inspection for any further possible leakage and the existing repair inspected. Everything looked satisfactory. The top was restrung by Rocky Richards and Mark Schoen requiring 100’ of nylon cord and 4 ½ hours of tedious labor. The hull’s rub rail area was sanded and painted a light blue to cover the many aggressive docking scars. The hull was lightly sanded and painted with antifouling paint and was commissioned on May 9 th . Fin Three (the Stanley “Tin Fin”) A new fuel level sender has been installed but still requires some adjustment (when time allows). The thruster is functioning and does come in handy when docking or leaving in the wind. Parking Lot has finally been cleared of stored vehicles (thanks to all for their cooperation) with it’s entrance graced with a second “No Turn Around” sign to get the point across. Oddly enough this does seem to make a difference in the amount of unauthorized intrusions. No word from Bret Kahl as to grading of the entrance. Mainland Well Leases, approximately two thirds of the contracts have been handed in and paid for the season. There have been two well openings that have become vacant after minor reshuffling and filled by Russ Adams and Tom Altobelli. Emergency Back-up Generator upon check the generator has come up with an error code and shuts down after 15 seconds of operation. The brushes are of insufficient tension and have to be replaced. Repairs are scheduled for the middle of May. Member went to club in 50 mile winds. Can’t do this for safety reasons. Fleet Captain – Ken Lipowski Rendezvous 1 is sold out. Only spots on wall available.

Can do entire seawall in 3 phasers by doing about 110 feet per year. Status of OD Manual/POS Manual for 2018 Already discussed Vinyl Siding update/Robison Tie-Back Repair Update Wi-Fi Upgrade Proposal (P/C Bill Hendricks & new member Mike Kelly) In an effort to provide faster and more secure internet to our members, P/C Bill Hendricks and new member Mile Kelly presented a proposal to the board and flag. Information was presented followed by a lot of questions and discussion. The proposal will provide NCYC faster internet speed, better internet access and greater security through a better firewall. Cost for this is $2447.35 for all hardware and cabling. Mike will provide the material at his cost and will provide the installation free of charge. The cost will be covered by an anonymous member. There will be a monthly support fee of $70 that the club will cover. Motion to go with this by V/C Blackburn, seconded by Ron Draper. Motion Carried . Willow Tree Maintenance Proposal Last year got quote of $4600 to trim all trees. This year we’ll spend $1500 to do 5 trees for $300 per tree from Top Tree Care. Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the first General Membership meeting of 2018. The purpose of the General Membership meetings is twofold. First to keep the membership informed of the Club business and the second is to allow the membership input into the process. So please feel free to ask questions. Obviously, the last 6 weekends have been challenging to us as it relates to weather. If my memory serves, 5 of the 6 Saturdays were wet. But, the good news, with the help of our membership, the majority of our major projects are mostly complete. We have a few more weeks of siding to finish and a little more painting, but all in all, another outstanding job by our working members to make NCYC stand tall. I am humbled by the huge amount of support Linda and I have received the first part of the 2018 Boating season. We are looking forward to 20 weeks of fun and camaraderie at North Channel Yacht Club. I am looking forward to our Steer Roast tonight hosted by P/C Bauer and P/C Huntley and family. I know you will be impressed with the dinner and the entertainment this evening. Then on Sunday, our Memorial Day Flag raising ceremony will take place at 1:00 PM., followed by the great luncheon put on by our own “Tiara” group. Blessing of the fleet at 3:00 PM by Father Steve, so get ready for a fun filled Memorial Day weekend. Lastly, I want to publicly thank Carla and Kevin Verkest for designing, making and installing my Commodore’s dock sign. Linda and I truly appreciate the way it turned out. Vice-Commodore’s Comments Vice Commodore, Ian Blackburn Welcomed everybody to official opening weekend. Lots of great efforts getting the club ready. Five weeks of rain placed a burdened on our team. Mentioned pluming issues. Ladies did deep cleaning in clubhouse getting club ready for opening. Recognized a number of members who provided significant support. Mentioned new method of switching the POS system. Mentioned to look out for Mackey’s minnow boat parked right behind the Fin. Welcomed new members. Rear-Commodore’s Comments Rear Commodore, Bill Calihan Mentioned participation bringing success. Thanks for all the hard work everyone did. Shout out to Tom Altobelli and Debbie Siwek. Have a good summer. Treasurer, Brian Fringer Brian walked the membership through the financial report year end 2017 and current 2018. An independent accountant’s consolidated tax review and tax return took place on 4/20/18. They reported all is well. Went through status as of April – on track with expenses. Covered 2017 revenue. Ron Draper Talked about the roster. Welcomed new members into club. Was able to get all members in roster this year. See Kim Miedema to get updated roster photo taken. Advertising revenue up from last year. $4110 in gross income this year, up from last year. New members Al Douglas and Mike Kelly bought ads this year. Total cost for 2018 roster was $3546. Bought 315 copies this year at a cost of $11.05 per copy. Will be passing out rosters after meeting. If by chance you don’t get your roster this weekend, after today, rosters will be stored in liquor room until 7/26, then he will mail out. Please make an effort to pick up your roster as I prefer not to mail. Updated all personal information in roster. Any corrections, let him know. OD schedule now 2 pages, not 4. Now have an editable copy of the by-laws with specified versions so we know which is the most up to date copy. Consolidated a lot of info for less pages to reduce cost. Discussed eBeacon and the website. Secretary – Glenn Nixon Doing well for weekend coverage. Need extra help on Dale Hall’s weekend and Smoke On the Water weekend. OD packets for mangers are available. Did update them. Should have received email from Glen if you’re managing this year. 2018 calendar of events updated on the club website. Working on updating the document section of website. A note from Brian Fringer: deposit tickets for weekend or weekday deposits, make sure you name is written on ticket. P/C Ken Smith will be updating. Supplies – Dale Hall Trying to make a few improvements to bar. We now have regular Budweiser on tap. Brought in new beers: Kilian’s and IPA. A question was asked about which button to use for the various beers. Three beers on right are $2, two in the middle are $3 and the 3 on the left are microbrews. Talked about the new room temperature wines available. Discussed wine supply changes. Added recycle containers behind bar. V/C Blackburn commented the new POS system is to make the process of switching prices for special outside events easier. Discussed party prices, can use swipe card. Level 1 prices everyday member prices, party prices on level 2 with swipe of card. Level 3 card for day events with guests. Can be done by swiping card. Robison Seawall Financial Projection Update P/C Pat Carroll discussed the poor shape of Robison seawall. Need to replaced 112’ for $35,000. Propose to do 112’ every year until done. Will be paying cash to do project. Brian Fringer explained the finances for the project. We’re in a good cash position to do it. P/C Paul Jarvis asked what to do if future boards don’t agree with completing the seawall project? Motion to approve funding for 112’ of new seawall in 2018 was made by P/C Rick Romatz, seconded by P/C Scott Bell. Motion Carried. P/C John Anderson asked about the decking along the new seawall. Cost does not include new decking. Asked about doing more than 112’ in 2018. Answer was no as we don’t want to borrow to fund. Frank Corcoran asked if we’re dipping into the cash reserves to fund the new seawall. Answer no. Kim Miedema asked about making wells longer while the new seawall is being put in. P/C Carroll replied that it would be a much bigger cost, about triple the price. Jeff Edgerly asked about D dock. Commodore Pagel indicated it will be addressed at a later time. P/C Hue Vestal proposed an amendment to the motion to approve the project until it’s completed as opposed to just the first 112’. P/C Chuck Stroh commented that future boards will have the authority to stop any project as they see fit providing it’s not a by-law. Seconding P/C Vestal’s motion was P/C Romatz. MOTION CARRIES.
