North Channel Yacht Club January 2024 Beacon

Commodore’s Comments: PC Rick Romatz

Happy New Year to all of my North Channel Yacht Club Friends, Family, and the entire Membership Jill and I are excited to get moving with the 2024 Boating season with many Fun-Filled activities planned for the upcoming year and with the help of our Fleet Captains Shelly and Gary Schroka who are busy planning some Awesome Rendezvous and the help of the great teamwork from our Board of Directors this is going to a great year full of Camaraderie, Fellowship , and a lot of Memories to be made. We would like to remind everyone that NCYC is a private, members-only, working club. As a working club, please remember we are working toward a common goal that creates strong bonds and lifelong friendships. NCYC is a great big family, and we need to remember to treat everyone with respect. We only have a couple of projects going on this year that need to be completed prior to the fitting out weekend one being the much needed replacement of the ice maker condensing units which it looks like our Club House Director Bill Frederiksen has completely under control. And the second would be the re-decking of A-Dock and Battleship Row making it safer for members this project was made possible by the donation our own First Mates Thank You all for what you do for our Club. As we prepare for the Spring, please stay engaged and look for opportunities to volunteer, participate and use your talents to make the greatest club on the water even better. We as a Board and Flag welcome all your ideas and expertise to ensure all our

projects are successful. Thank you to everyone in advance this year as we look forward to moving our club forward. Teamwork makes the Dream work. In closing, please keep the families of PC Bill Bauer and PC Paul Jarvis in your thoughts and prayers for their loss, these two gentlemen were strong mentors for me and many others and the success of North Channel Yacht Club. They will be deeply missed by many.

This time of year is normally very exciting with a new Flag and Board ready to go and set the direction for this amazing club.

I would like to congratulate Terry Steinmacher with his elevation to Rear Commodore, as well as to Shelly Shroka and John O’leary joining our already awesome board. On a sad note, we said goodbye to 2 wonderful human beings and extraordinary NCYC members with the passing of PC’s Bill Bauer and Paul Jarvis. Those two gentlemen poured their hearts and souls into this club and would not be what it is today without them. I will miss them for their knowledge, wisdom and encouraging spirit. Both lived great lives and left an amazing and lasting legacies. On behalf of the club, I would like to express my sincerest condolences to their families as they move through this time of grieving and onto the next chapters of their livers. When the Elite Brigade comes back to the NCYC this spring rest assured our team will be toasting these exemplary gentlemen for lives well lived. Vice Commodore Bill Burkhardt

Rear Commodore Terry Steinmacher

First, I would like to welcome everyone to the 2024 season. Commodore Rick has a fun and exciting season planned for all of us to enjoy. So, stay tuned for further information. I would also like to welcome the Returning Directors, the new Director of Harbor and Grounds, John O’Leary, Supplies Director, Shelly Schroka, and the reelected Director of Clubhouse, Bill Fredrickson, and Membership Director, Shelley Sweier. You, the membership, have voted in for the 2024 season and beyond. I am so looking forward to my new position as Rear Commodore. I would like to thank everyone again for giving me this opportunity to serve NCYC. I promise, I will bring the same passion to the position as I have when serving as the Harbor and Grounds Director. I will work directly with the Board of Director’s, and Flag, to ensure communication reaches the membership. As most of you may know by now, two of our most tendered members have passed. PC, Bill Bauer, which I, fortunately served as an Honor Guard at his service, along with others, and PC, Paul Jarvis. I know they will be looking down from above at NCYC, since our wonderful club was a big part of their lives. RIP my friends.

2024 Rear Commodore Terry Steinmacher

A Message from Chaplain Mark Javery

Since the last Beacon was published many in our NCYC family have suffered and are dealing with the pain of loss of a loved one. On December 25 th P/C Bill Bauer passed away. Surviving in our Club family are his wife Sandy, P/C Denise & Tom Huntley, Director Melissa and Clayton Winkler, as well as their entire families. On December 30 th Susan Martin passed away. Surviving in our Club family is her husband, Tom.

On January 3 rd P/C Paul Jarvis passed away. Surviving in our Club family is his wife, Cathy.

I am reminded in The Semon on the Mount where Jesus Christ said, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Allow Christ to use you and surround these NCYC families with your love and support. Reach out however you find appropriate now and throughout the coming months. Uphold them in your prayers! My hope is that all in our membership over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons had quality time with their families and as always took time to reflect and thank God for all His loving gifts to us. Every breath we take, every moment of existence is a grace from Him. The greatest gift being that of forgiveness and salvation through his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

Having just received a message that another friend passed and after speaking with his wife I want to share this with you all…. Whatever you need to say or want to do for another do it now. There is no guarantee of tomorrow.

“I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do… or any kindness that I can show… to ANY human being, let me do it NOW. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”

Henry Drummond

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who came out for the last two work parties and lent a helping hand closing up for the 2023 season. On Saturday November 4th Commodore Brian, Clubhouse Director Bill Frederiksen and myself did a final walk around of the Harbor and Grounds along with the Clubhouse and I am very happy to report that the old girl is all closed up for her long winter nap. Spoke with Liz from Jay’s Septic on November 6 th ; the last cleaning of the Porta Potty will be November 16th. We will be in vacation mode and will need to call back in spring to start services back up. Spoke with Carly from Waste Management on November 8th and put our account in seasonal service. Will need to call back in spring also to start services back up.

Member of the Month

November - Tom Stackpoole The NCYC Flag and Board of Directors have elected Tom Stackpoole with Member of the Month for October 2023. As we all know, Tom is very much a people person while sitting in the clubhouse having a Bud Light with a few of his friends, (off the clock of course), once his chores are completed. I have heard many times, after he has left the clubhouse after his final, final, that Linus has left the building, as they were heading to get the broom and dustpan to clean up the little surprises that he would leave behind, such as grass clippings along with various other things. With all kidding aside, as we all know, Tom is an artist whether he is riding around our beautifully landscaped island on the Lexmark, or has in his hands a weed whacker, hedge trimmer, trimming the trees to a perfect and even height which he likes to refer to as his trademark. Whether you’re a member or a guest visiting for the first time, or weekly the first thing you see is the beautiful landscaping throughout the island. And as the Harbor and Grounds Director, I can tell you that you make my job very easy and I receive a lot of complements on how beautiful the island is. The credit is all yours Sir. I’m sure I can speak for everyone; we all appreciate your hard work for what you do for the appearance of the grounds on a daily basis, and look forward to many more years of your artistry.

NEWS From BoatUS Boat Owners AssociaƟon of The United States What 222,000 Boaters Got Wrong

ANNAPOLIS, Md., Jan. 10, 2024 – The BoatUS FoundaƟon for BoaƟng Safety and Clean Water offers a range of online boaƟng safety training courses — including 36 free state boaƟng safety courses — that make boaƟng safety educaƟon affordable and accessible. More than 220,000 boaters took one of these boaƟng cerƟficaƟon courses last year, which require students to correctly answer some quesƟons at the conclusion of each course. Which quesƟons did course takers get wrong most oŌen? While we can’t outright give you the answers, here are some topics that course takers – or any boater – would be wise to study. Do you know which way air moves? If you had said “from the prevailing direcƟon,” you’d be incorrect. Air ulƟmately moves from high-pressure areas to low-pressure areas, caused by the uneven heaƟng of the earth’s surface. Weather for Boaters has more. You’re in Mexico on the hook and you see a yellow (Q) flag flying on the boat next to you. Being a friendly type, you welcome the neighboring crew to port with coffee and muffins, but they politely decline. What’s up? Did you just happen to have bad luck to find yourself next to the only cranky boat crew in Baja? While the flag indicates the vessel is healthy, it also means it is requesƟng approval – under quaranƟne – to enter port. Therefore, it’s best to hold off on the kaffeeklatsch unƟl they’ve cleared in. Whether you’re headed near or afar, Planning Your Cruise will help you stay on the right side of the law. There’s a lot of new technology on boats today, and one of them growing in popularity is AIS, or AutomaƟc IdenƟficaƟon System, which can help you steer clear of ship traffic. How does it work? AIS uses VHF radio frequencies to broadcast the AIS informaƟon, including a vessel’s unique idenƟficaƟon, posiƟon, course and

speed. AIS is also likely one of the last few remaining things that your smartphone cannot do by itself … yet. Can you explain compass variaƟon and deviaƟon? VariaƟon is caused by the misalignment of the magneƟc lines of force with the meridians of longitude (those imaginary lines from North Pole to South Pole), while deviaƟon is caused by the effects of the magneƟc properƟes of the vessel. What this also means is due to deviaƟon, you might want to remove the wrench you leŌ in the storage drawer located just under the helm compass to ensure accurate funcƟoning. Modern Marine NavigaƟon has more. What is the length of a mile? When you’re seƫng up your GPS, it’s a big deal whether you choose statute miles or nauƟcal miles. A statute mile, at 5,280 feet, is about 12% shorter than a nauƟcal mile, or 6,706 feet. The BoatUS FoundaƟon’s How to Use GPS course shows how that whopping 796 feet of difference is more than enough room to get into trouble. You’re in your powerboat heading down the lake and another powerboat less than a half-mile ahead appears to be meeƟng or crossing with you and makes two short horn blasts. What does this mean? If you said that the boats intend to pass you starboard side to starboard side, congratulate yourself for this correct answer! You can learn all the signals you need to operate a boat safely by taking a free, state specific Basic BoaƟng Course.
