Summer is finally here and it seems to be flying by at the same time.

SAVE THE DATE – The 2025 Commodore ball has been booked for the weekend of January. 10-12 2025 at the St Clair Inn. We will be having a Friday night event at the War Water Brewery as well. We have a block of rooms with special pricing. It is limited so please get your reservations in ASAP. More details to follow. A shout-out and thank you to Randy and Linda Pagel for doing such a great job over the holiday weekend, and a special thank you for providing the entertainment. Now that the club is open and many people are coming and going, here are some friendly reminders to our members and their guests. 1. Pets - all pets need to always be on a leash. PooPoo - there are 3 locations on the island with PooPoo bags and trash cans. Please clean up after your pet. 2. The club is your club and our club, all workers are volunteers doing their best. Please be kind and patient with them. 3. It is everyone’s job to keep the island neat and clean. 4. Garbage cans are for NCYC trash, debris and garbage from your boat are NOT allowed to be put into trash cans on the island. Our mainland dumpster is emptied twice a week and is full and/or overflowing on many days. 5. All guests on the island must be accompanied by a club member. 6. All guests must be signed in shortly after arriving on the island and they are only allowed to get drinks at the bar if they have a gift card, which the member can purchase for them. 7. Rear Commodore Terry Steinmacher Hello again fellow members, as most of you know by now we unfortunately ended up on the wrong

side of the firecracker over by Gull Island and unfortunately ran over rocks and had to be towed in heading to our first rendezvous of the season at SCYC. That defiantly took some wind out of our sails for Friday evening but we were able to participate Saturday and enjoy the wonderful weather and camaraderie that only NCYC members can provide. However with our main source of lake transportation down for a few weeks we are very thankful that we were able to participate in the dingy poker run for our first time and I would like to thank all involved for hosting such a wonderful event. We have just completed our OD weekend July 12-14 and would like to thank all our work team, and everyone that showed up and made it extra special, I believe a good time was had by all. I know myself and Kathy are going to need a couple of days to catch up. As we look forward to kid’s day I understand there will be some fun called Soak the Flag so come one, come all and let’s see what you got! As everyone is aware by now we have had a couple of incidences that happened at the club that the board had to react to. May I please suggest that all members’ new and old please read or reread our latest versions of our policy’s and bylaws that can be found in the 2024 roster. If something is unclear or you cannot find what you are looking for, or just have a question please reach out to me or any Flag Officer, or a Board Member. We are all here to help.

A Message from Chaplain Mark Javery

Since our last Beacon was published, I have been advised of the passing of long-time member James Hogan. This past weekend I spoke with several members who shared great memories of times with James and his family at our club. Today I spoke with his life partner/NCYC member Barbara Steffy. It was touching, Barbara sharing their memories at NCYC with family, and their club friends who truly are regarded as extended family. Keep Barbara, James’ son David, and their entire family in your thoughts and prayers during this time of loss and mourning. Currently, Barbara remains in Florida taking care of their estate matters. This month we celebrated our country’s Independence Day. It is easy to get distracted with all the fireworks and celebrating going on and lose sight of the meaning of this holiday as Christians.

Why is it important to acknowledge the significance of Independence Day in today’s world?

American liberty is a blessing from God. Because of our freedom, we can express our faith and share it with others. In many parts of the world this is not the case. The cost of following Christ is much greater for believers around the world.

Remembering this, I encourage you to not lose sight as why we celebrate Independence Day, as nation and as Christians.

Take time to reflect on the ways God has blessed you in life and make it a goal to never take your freedoms for granted.

I hope you spent your day with family and friends but did take a moment to celebrate the blessing of freedom that was given to us by Christ.

We hope everyone had a wonderful 4 th of July holiday and was able to celebrate with their family and friends. When it comes down to it, there really is nothing more important than the people you love, trust or simply want to be around and no better place to enjoy their company than on the North Channel Island. Summer is finally here, and our island is in full swing. Ladies’ week was a lot of fun with great friends, good food, non-stop laughter, several activities and fond memories that we will cherish for many years to come. The next General Membership meeting will be Saturday, August 31 st in the clubhouse @ 10:00am. Followed by a Labor Day “Tropical Paradise” themed Polish Dinner on Sunday, September 1st . Reservations can be sent to Susan Burkhardt by August 25 th . Please check the Beacon for further details. Consider joining a great group of women – feel free to get involved, don’t be shy, volunteer and share your time, talents and ideas. Consider running for a board position. More information to follow from our First Mates Nominating Committee – they will be looking for YOU! The Boutique is always available for your shopping fix while on the island. You can never have enough NCYC logo wear. Come visit us next time you are at the club.

Our Christmas party plans are underway. Save the date for Thursday, December 5 th at Watermark Bar and Grille in St. Clair Shores. More details to follow.

My last mention for this month is a gentle reminder on how fortunate we ALL are to be a part of this NCYC family, sharing this beautiful island, in the warmth of the Michigan summer sun. While we take a moment to reflect on our many blessings, please consider participating in our 2024 charitable project to support “The Macomb Charitable Foundation: Serving Underprivileged Children”. The donation jars are in the clubhouse and donations will be accepted throughout the boating season.

Welcome to the June 13, 2024, Board of Directors Meeting.

Let me start by saying thank you all, This Board continues to show its commitment to teamwork, to work together to get the job done. I think we have had a great start to the 2024 boating season starting with an awesome Fitting Out Party and Flag Raising Memorial Weekend a great time was had by all. Looking forward into 2024 we have a lot of fun filled weekends ahead of us through the next 4 months looks like we have something going on just about every weekend we’re going to have a blast. A Special Thank to our NCYC Ladies My wife Jill, Christa Betts and Shelley Sweier for jumping right in and preparing an awesome Spaghetti dinner with amazing meatballs and all the fixings when Tom our Bald Chef came down with a case of Pneumonia and could not be on the island to serve Friday Night Dinner. June 7 th , due to bad weather, we had a short attendance so we have enough for a future Italian dinner. June and July are usually busy months for the NCYC Board and Flag. Any By-Law changes we may want to make need to have the language written and approved by the By-Laws Committee and Board by the August BOD meeting also the nominating committee has to get the slate ready and approved for the up coming election by the Labor Day GMM meeting, so there’s a lot for us to put together over the next 2 months these are things that need to be Board approved by the August meeting.

We received an anonymous $5,000.00 donation from a member.

Looking at this agenda there are many things to review and approve and I’m sure this Board will make short work of it in a short period of time, I’m counting on it.

Clubhouse

I am pleased to report that the Clubhouse survived the fitting out weekend with minimal additional fitting out. There is one notable exception that I’ll discuss in detail, below. Meanwhile, I got some great feedback through May regarding updates to the Spring Work party “to do” list; adding items, changing the order of some of the work to do, moving some items to Elite Brigades, and changes to the work done the week leading up to fitting out. I appreciate everyone’s input and I’ll be making adjustments for next year’s opening activities. I’d like to thank the First Mates for their efforts upstairs. I received quite a few compliments on their work, and I was sure to take all the credit for it. Finally, during the work weekends we identified an issue with the drainage lines behind the clubhouse. Following the fitting out weekend, we did some troubleshooting and then brought in a plumber with a camera and location equipment to identify the root cause of the issue. We have a collapsed underground line that supports the drainage for the back-of-clubhouse downspouts and kid’s room sump pump. We currently have a workaround in place to accommodate the drainage away from the clubhouse and we’re working to assess how best to execute a permanent solution to the drainage issue. Fortunately, mother nature has spared us from any more surprises. We removed that large, compromised branch on the maple tree near Robison. Thank you Jack Lucido & Ed Mizgalski for assisting with removal on short notice. We are moving into a few painting projects to help freshen up the appearance of several areas and are in planning stages to the parking lot on the mainland. New signage is also being made to standardize the color and format of others that were recently made. I appreciate those that have taken time to share thoughts on other opportunities for improvement that need attention or consideration. The most impressive thing about this is that many have not only shared their opportunity but have actually engaged in implementing their ideas. Nothing better than helping when possible. Says a lot about our members. Please look out for the survey as there are a few questions there related to H&G that will help ensure whatever efforts are taken, is with the input of the members wishes in mind. 6. By-Law / Policy proposed changes

A. Proposed By-Law Changes:

1) Article III Membership, Section 2, H i.

Current: Any membership status changes must be requested in writing prior to January 1. ii. Proposed: Any membership status changes must be requested in writing to the Membership Director prior to January 31.

Motion: Shelley Sweier to propose change for forwarding to By-Law Committee for review and approval. Second: Christa Betts. Motion Carried

2) Article III Membership, Section 1, E i.

Current: Junior membership shall be available to the immediate family of current members in good standing between the ages of 18 and 25 years of age. Junior members shall enjoy limited privileges or extension of age limits of membership as determined by the Board of Directors; however, they shall not hold office or vote. Junior members in good standing for at least 5 years, may join as non-Boating members. ii. Proposed: Junior membership shall be available to the immediate family of current members in good standing between the ages of 18 and 25 years of age. Junior members shall enjoy limited privileges; however, they shall not hold office or vote. An NCYC burgee will not be provided to Junior Memberships, as they do not have docking privileges, which includes guest boats and incoming rendezvous sponsorship privileges. Junior membership only includes primary junior member and does not include anyone residing with the junior member who is not an immediate family member of the junior member. Junior members that complete the obligations for the full seven (7) years between the ages of 18 to 25 years of age will qualify for a waiver of the membership initiation fee. They may join as either non-boating members or boating members. Any shortage in junior member years or obligations will be reviewed and the initiation fee will be pro-rated by the Board of Directors. Junior members may apply for full boating membership at any time during their junior years by paying the pro rated amount of the initiation fee, as determined by the Board of Directors, as well as full payment of yearly dues. 4) Annual Dues Payment iii. Current: As required under Article V, Section 2, if the annual dues amount is not paid by March 1, membership privileges are suspended. Further, if full amount owed (including late charge) is not paid by March 1, it is the duty of the Board of Directors to expel such Member. iv. Proposed: As required under Article V, Section 2, of the NCYC By-Laws, if the annual dues amount is not paid by March 1 (30 days), membership privileges are suspended. Further, if full amount owed (including late charge) is not paid by April 1 (60 days), it is the duty of the Board of Directors to expel such Member.

5) Policy for Late Fees and NSF Charges (first sentence)

i. Current: Any Member in arrears for dues 30 days after they become payable shall be assessed a late charge as determined annually by the NCYC Board of Directors. ii. Proposed: Any Member in arrears for dues after February 1, or when they become payable, shall be assessed a late charge as determined annually by the NCYC Board of Directors.
