June 2022 Flag Comments

From The Flag May was an outstanding month at the North Channel Yacht Club (NCYC) and the Flag as well as the Board of Directors (BOD) would like to send a huge thank to all the members that participated in the Elite Brigade weekends and the Spring Work Party weekends to prepare our island for the launch of another great year. The club looks outstanding and with a couple of exceptions we were able to complete all the projects that we had on our list for the Spring. Unfortunately, we had a couple of unforeseen issues that cost some additional time and effort but, our members came through, like they always do. 1) Prior to the start of elite brigade, we spent some time getting the water turned on to the island but unfortunately, a 15-year-old pipe had rusted through and turned the area between the club house and the old pump house (next to blue awning) into a pond. After some ingenuity and hard work, we were able to dig a 4-foot hole find the leak and cap it, which is allowing the clubhouse to operate normally. Members have filled that hole and we have re-seeded the grass to cover the bare spot that many of you have asked about. 2) We were not so fortunate with the supports for the Blue Awning in the grass next to A-Dock. Although work was planned on the framework/supports to get the concreted anchors back in the ground, cracks were identified in the top of the support. To ensure 100% safety of all our members and guests, we removed

the pieces and have sent them out to be welded. We will reinstall the supports and get the awning up hopefully before the hot July sun arrives. 3) Setting up the new Point of Sale (POS) system has been anything but easy however, we think you will find the use of the new system to be VERY easy the next time you are completing your work hours behind the bar. Many hours of updating and testing went into ensuring a smooth transition. With the move to the new POS system, we also made an extra effort to maintain our existing membership card supplier. These cards have allowed us to use them as both a membership card as well as to purchase drinks. NCYC purchased the software necessary to make the cards compatible to the new system and transferred your existing balance from previous years to the 2022 card. Special thanks to Supplies Director Al Douglas and P/C Ian Blackburn for their tireless work to make this all happen prior to opening day. Many projects came together as planned and have added to the beauty of our island. 1) The Walkway project from the Boutique to D-Dock was completed on time and ready for opening day. Additional soil has been placed along the walkway and grass seed has been sown to blend it into the surrounding area. Thanks to many members that spend hours on this huge undertaking. 2) The dock extension at the corner of A-Dock and Battleship Row was a project left over from 2021 but, it has now been completed. Special thanks to Kevin Verkest for his many hours of fabricating and welding to accomplish what has turned out to be a great addition to the area. Next time you are at the club, take the time to walk out and admire the fine work that Kevin and his team have completed. 3) The kids play area has been updated with new mulch and an extra effort by our members even allowed the Mallard hen that was nesting under the slide to hatch her eggs without being disturbed. NCYC members are not only talented but, they are compassionate as well. 4) The flower beds have been prepped and planted and all the sprinklers are in working order 5) Repair work has been completed on the screens of the pavilion and new fans installed. 6) Inside the clubhouse you can check out the drywall that has been replaced in the hallway on the second floor. The First Mates have done a very nice job of

updating many of the overnight rooms with new furniture, pictures and bedding.

We know we have missed a few things but, there is just too much to mention. Very many improvements have been made and several projects will be completed soon. All of this is possible because of all of you, our great members. The weather on opening weekend did not disappoint and we culminated all the hard work with our General Membership Meeting, Steer Roast and Flag-Raising Ceremony on Memorial Day weekend. The American Flag that will fly at NCYC for the 2022 season was provided by Bernie Callwaert-Lapko in memory of past member, and veteran Bob Callewaert who we lost in 2001. The flag raising ceremony was dedicated to 1990 First Mates President Vicky Klapec and 1986 Past Commodore Cass Klapec, who we lost in 2020 and 2021 respectfully. Moving comments were delivered by their son Steven and daughter Cathy. We are very proud of everything that has been accomplished leading up to our opening day and the North Channel Yacht Club is well on its way to another great year. We look forward to seeing you on the island.

A Message from Chaplain Mark Javery

NOTES FROM CHAPLAIN MARK JAVERY The past month and since the publication of the

May beacon our membership appears to be in good condition. As of this writing I am not aware of any in our membership suffering loss, in the hospital, sick or in distress. As we now enjoy our opened club and renewed fellowship with each other please be safe, look to take care of each other, and be always mindful of how blessed we are. Fathers play a critical role in the lives of their children: they are called to be teachers, providers, disciplinarians, and living examples of being Christ like. It’s a tall order from the greatest Father of all. Proverbs 20:7 (nkjv) The righteous man walks in his integrity; His children are blessed after him.

Wishing all our dad’s a happy and blessed Father’s Day !

**Dad, God’s- Masterpiece**

God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea,

The generous soul of nature,

The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle’s flight

Then God combined all these qualities, When there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it ….DAD

Commodore’s Comments

Commodore, Dale Hall

Commodore’s Comments It has been a very quick 3 ½ months since we were finalizing the Commodores Ball and starting to plan for the upcoming boating season. Now, it is upon us and we are 2 days away from holding our 1 st Elite Brigade Work Day. As the weather changes and the excitement starts to build, I am encouraging everyone to talk to our membership, get them involved and spread the excitement that the pre-season brings to NCYC. I cannot express in words my appreciation for all the help and dedication that this Board of Directors has shown in just 3 ½ short months. We have: 1) A strong financial position that we have made an extra effort to communicate consistently to our membership 2) A consistent/monthly publication of the Beacon, chucked full of the clubs business, good lake information as well as great boating tips 3) A great group of directors that have been planning, negotiating and preparing for our first weekend of work on the island Now is our time to really shine. We have six weeks to accomplish a long list of items to be ready for Memorial Day weekend and our official opening. I ask that everyone look for ways to help each other and engage our membership to once again, make NCYC the best club on the Great Lakes.

Commodore Dale

2. Spoke with Kevin Verkest and he is planning on brining the dock extension for the end of A dock at the second Elite Brigade work party 4/23. I spoke with Ron Nagaj and he is going to be the team leader on the project and is going to be there also to hopefully complete the project.

3. We will have a new fleet of three carts for the island that will be some work horses for years to come. There will be one delivered to the island for immediate work duty at our first elite brigade.

4. I have also purchased a new cart for the main land parking lot, although different from the ones on the island I'm sure the members are going to love this new addition when loading and unloading of their vehicles.

5. Please come out and fulfill your work hours at any of the 6 work parties so we can get NCYC in tip top shape for our opening week.
