MARCH 2019 BEACON

March 2019 Beacon

I can’t think of a better way to usher Winter to the door and welcome Spring into our lives than to see an image of 2 pretty little girls finding 4 Leaf Clovers in the West Lawn of NCYC. Last year one day I found Addie and Bella playing and giggling in the grass over something. Then they showed me several of these charming anomalies of turf they found that morning. I knew right away I had my March 2019 Beacon Cover and my usual St. Patrick’s Day clip art can take a rest. They make a picture of Happiness. Thank you, girls!! Now for the serious adult stuff, we’ve got quite a year of Activities, Rendezvous, Parties, and all sorts of frivolous fun planned for you in the upcoming season. If you haven’t already, make sure to get with our Secretary Frank Corcoran and firm up your OD Work Weekend time, the schedule is filling and you don’t want to end up with a time that’s not easy for you. It is after all the Members working the weekends that make all the fun and frivolity possible. Let’s raise a toast to the “Last Snowflake of the Season” because Addie and Bella have a lot more charms to find.

We are counting down the days to warmer weather! This year has been incredibly colder than I remember past winters. Good news is that they are predicting the water levels to increase again in the Great Lakes. Moving on to a couple points of business . . . . Ron Braun is working on assembling the Weekday Manager schedule. Currently we have four open weeks. If you or a team of members are interested in taking a week, please reach out to Ron at crbraun10@comcast.net. The available weeks are June 2-7, June 23-28, July 28-August 2 and August 11-16. Please encourage friends interested in joining the club to contact us now. The Board prefers to conduct the interviews and hold the vote early in the year; allowing new members to be included in the annual roster and introduced at the May general membership meeting. With spring on the way, we need to start thinking about the projects that need to get accomplished. To name a few, we are replacing the siding on the upper half of the clubhouse, replacing the decking along the new seawall, giving the showers a much-needed facelift and replacing the power pedestals along B & C docks. We will require many hands to accomplish these projects and looking forward to your help during the Elite Brigade as it is most appreciated.

Upcoming events are the: March 8th -10th ABYA Spring Rendezvous; March 10th Blessing of the Fleet at the historic Mariners' Church of Detroit; April 13th the first Elite Brigade; and May 5th will be the First Mates Fashion Show. Hope to see you at some of these events! Don’t forget to visit the events calendar on the NCYC website. It is shaping up nicely and is a great reference when planning your summer activities. Your participation is what makes this club the best on the water! Stay Warm, Commodore Ian

Well we sure have had our share of bone chilling wind, snow and ice this past month. We still have snow forecasted for the end of February and temps in the low 20’s for the beginning of March. A far cry from the weather that all of the NCYC snow birds are enjoying in Florida. I hear that Diane French hosted another successful luncheon down in Bradenton Florida and it was well attended by NCYC members and quest. Thinking ahead it is just seven Saturdays until our first “Elite Brigade”, which is April 13th. Now would be a good time to set your schedules for the date or dates that you can come out to the club to help get the club house and grounds ready for opening day. Don’t forget that you can come out more than one Saturday for your work hour’s obligation, the extra help would be appreciated. While you are setting your schedule, you should also check the O.D. work schedule to see which weekend you are assigned. The O.D. that you are schedule to work with should be in contact with you to go over all the work details for your work weekend.

If you know of anyone who would make a good member, now is the time to get them to fill out a membership application and collect a $250.00 NON - REFUNDABLE deposit. It then can be given to our Membership Director Debbie Siwek or any Board Member for processing. What’s happing in March? March 4th ABYA meeting hosted by Huron Point Yacht Club 8, 9 and 10th ABYA Spring Rendezvous, Midland, Valley Plaza. 10th Blessing of the Fleet, Detroit, Old Mariners Church. 17th Happy St Patrick’s day. Parents and Grandparents do not forget that this is the time of year that your children and grandchildren can be signed up for safe boating classes in your local areas. Check with our ABYA Delegate P/C Randy Pagel for further information. For more information on these dates and other up coming events check inside this Beacon.

Regards, V / C Bill

Just a few short weeks until the official start of spring but winter is not giving up easily! Fortunately we have two upcoming events to help see us through until the first Elite Brigade April 13. The ABYA Spring Rendezvous is being held March 8-10 at the Valley Plaza Resort in Midland, MI. On March 10, the NCYC Flag will participate in the Blessing of the Fleet at Mariner's Church in Detroit. All members should have received an email fanout and invitation to join these outstanding events. If not, please check your email address in the online roster to make sure it is accurate and up to date. Your NCYC Board of Directors is hard at work preparing a well organized, fun and productive 2019 boating season. I would like to commend a particularly well organized and hard working Club Secretary, Frank Corcoran, for reporting the "final" weekend OD and worker schedule is materially complete. All members should keep watch for messages from weekend OD's confirming weekend work schedules and initial details needed to prepare for the season. As I mentioned in my February comments, there is a tremendous amount of work ahead to prepare the Club for opening weekend. In addition to the usual cleanup and clubhouse preparation we have a huge challenge ahead to restore 100' of the Robison docks and walkway. Weather and river conditions permitting the work can start ahead of the first Elite Brigade on April 13. If you are interested in pitching in, please contact any Board member. Everyone have a safe and happy March! R/C Glenn Nixon

AMessage from Chaplain Art Brooks

We receiveved news from P/C Ken Smith that former member Marlene O'Connor passed away in Florida where she lived. Art himself is a little under the weather lately so I'm standing in for him this month. Perhaps a card or call to the Good Chaplain will help speed things along. Mary Stackpoole is still very ill. Please remember her in your prayers. Ron

Not all that Glitters is Gold; Not all who Wander are Lost;

The Old that is Strong does not Wither; Deep Roots are Not Touched by the Frost!! Bilbo Baggins

The words above spoken by an old Hobbit in a fictitious place named the Shire in a time long ago have always captivated me and led me to trust in old things that still work well and to be wary of things that look good for a moment. We still have a 1969 Chris Craft Commander that runs rings around many modern fishing boats and She proves more than reliable. I think our human relationships are the same way. As we enter this Lent season, we ponder what we have and what we may do without. Most often people realize it's some material thing or pleasant vice or habit that comes to mind and we think we should take a break from it. I've never heard anyone say they're taking a break from things they truly love, that being the people in our lives. Lent, like Christmas can be a time to strengthen the bonds within our families and with our friends. It ends with Easter, the day we celebrate our coming together with the Lord in a place far greater than this. For me, Lent isn't so much a time of living without something I really don't need anyway as much as it is a time to focus on growing the roots that are not touched by the frost. Ron

1981. A lawyer, a tax accountant and a financial advisor walk into a bar. Seriously. That was the start of a well-coordinated plan that’s still paying off in 2019.

Managing wealth is no joke. And advice coordination is essential as wealth grows, and grows more complex. From thoughtfully planning for a long retirement to addressing unique needs like concentrated equity positions or selling a business, a Raymond James financial advisor can pull the pieces together to orchestrate a properly synched approach. LIFE WELL PLANNED.

First off, I would like to say what an honor it is to be serving with such a great group of members. There is a lot of talent and experience sitting around this table, so if you are struggling or not sure how to move forward, please reach out to a fellow board member. Let’s vow to work together as a team. We have been handed a club that is in great shape and it is now our turn to do our part and move it forward. Our focus should be to break down barriers and ensure that we remain as one club. I can say that it will not always be easy, but I can guarantee you that it will be rewarding. Please do your best and put the membership first. But also remember that we are all volunteers. I would like to thank you in advance for your sacrifice of time and your desire to offer up your talents. Last but not least, let’s have some fun!! Vice-Commodore’s Comments Vice Commodore, Bill Calihan As in the past there is a full schedule of events and projects planned for this year. I am sure it will be of interest to and supported by all of the members. Thank you all for stepping up to take on a leadership position. Your hard work and sacrifice help move the club forward. Rear Commodore, Glenn Nixon Happy New Year to the board and flag! Welcome and thank you to the new board members. Thanks also to the returning board members. I am thrilled and honored to be working with all of you to continue leading NCYC, preserving and improving our island paradise, and tirelessly representing the membership. It seems like a long time until spring but the winter months pass quickly and soon we will all be experiencing that mad dash for launch and prepare for the season. In the meantime I look forward to working with this outstanding team to continue the positive momentum building over the past few years. Look forward to seeing everyone at the Commodores ball on the 19 th . Financial Report Treasurer, Brian Fringer Treasurer Brian Fringer distributed the financial report and commented that the year wrapped up quietly in December. appropriate size well for his boat. After he was tied up he was asked by a fellow member to move his boat. The new member went through the inconvenience of moving his boat since he was not sure if the fellow member had the authority to ask him to move. The board discussed the matter and felt that the club rules should be followed regarding well availability on a first come basis. Any dispute should be discussed with the OD at the time who has the authority to make the final decision. After much discussion it was decided that letters would be sent to both members. Commodore Ian read a request from a long standing member asking if they could hold their daughter’s wedding on the island. In order to not set precedence of using the club for free it was decided that the club should charge a fee and that the fee should be waived for this member that has done much for the club.

A band that has been contracted to play on August 10 is asking if they could stay in the rooms the night of the engagement. Much discussion took place.

Good of the order Dale said he is proud of to say the club is talking about being eco friendly as well as putting up a new sign.

The first mates will providing new playground equipment and Tom Altobelli would like input from the board and first mates on where to put it. Ron Draper recommended that we consider maintaining the traditional ambiance of the Clubhouse/Bar and Docks as we continue lightbulb replacement with LEDs. To date many of the replacements are inappropriate in their color temperature simulating Daylight at 5600 Kelvin and the lights are so bright and white that the ones on the dock pose a safety hazard because they take away a walker’s night vision and the upstairs bedrooms are uncomfortably bright for a bedroom application. A more appropriate color temperature for these applications is 3000-3200 Kelvin and these color LEDs are much easier to find today than a couple years ago. John Sweier mentioned his replacements will have adjustable color temperature and will meet our needs. Adjo urnment MOTION: Moved by V/C Bill Callihan and seconded by Darryl Campbell to adjourn the meeting. Motion Carried .
