NOVEMBER 2018 BEACON
Introducing “Burgee Travels”
Team Blackburn
Members, take your Burgee with you on your off season travels this year. Take a picture and send to Ron, for the Beacon. Let’s see where our Burgee goes… Thanks Ian.
The only good thing about being in a catastrophic auto accident is realizing that in an instant, things go from normal to as bad as it gets, the only direction to go is up. Waking up in a hospital bed with my head immobilized and a morphine drip in my arm, and the right side of my body broken from head to foot, it took a team of trauma specialists a week to explain to me all the things that were damaged in my wife, virtually every bone, organ, muscle, and system were damaged. The prognosis for her survival was slim, the chance for recovery was little more than a prayer. As I progressed from a hospital bed to a wheelchair, to a walker, to a cane over months it occurred to me that as Jeri was also coming out of a 4-month coma, the worst was past, she would live. She still couldn’t see, hear, or move, but she’d survive, now it was time to fix things. If I had to choose between what happened to us or some hideous disease where one doesn’t know if there is an “up-side” in the future, I’ll take the crash any day. I’ve written several articles about all of this for another publication and have opted not to include them in the Beacon as I didn’t see any relevance. Until now. I see parallels between our Club and the Church we belong to in that both organizations have some very talented and zealous cooks. I mention this because when tragedy strikes, help comes from varied and unexpected places. For me, it was a matter of meals that just started showing up on the porch. Nothing special, just the same home cooked dinners everyone was eating and a couple portions set aside for us and someone was delegated to deliver them. I can tell you, at the most stressful times, not having to worry about cooking some days, is the most helpful thing a person can receive. During this season of giving, I’m asking you to recognize any need you may see in our Club, and take a few minutes to put a couple meals aside in a tin and deliver to our Members who could use a little help. Blue Skies; Following Seas, Ron

What a year. With team work, volunteerism and participation, 2018 should go down in the record books as a successful year. Linda and I had a great time as your Ambassadors and having the opportunity to steer the ship in 2018. We had a great Haul-Out weekend with a Turkey Dinner and all the trimmings. I want to thank the First Mates for the great breakfast on Sunday morning during the Haul Out weekend. We had two work parties which were attended not only by our long time members but saw a lot of new members who joined this year and jumped in to contribute and learned very quickly what it takes to run such a successful club I want to take this opportunity to thank my Flag Officers, Board of Directors, Fleet Captains, Board Recorder and Harbormaster for their hard work, dedication and devotion to the membership. To manage the tasks presented to them in a positive way, which made this year a success. Special thanks also go to the First Mates and Ancient Mariners for all of their hard work and monetary support. Lastly, I must thank my wife, Linda, for her food coordination for all of the work parties, keeping my calendar organized and supporting my every step along the way. She is my anchor and my partner.
Regards, Commodore Randy
I can’t believe the club is closed and we are already in November! The NCYC 2018 boating season was fantastic. Many great new members joined our ranks along with a full schedule of events that were well attended. I would like to thank the Weekday Manager, O.D.’s, event organizers, the board of directors, the Pagel family and finally the membership for making 2018 a memorable time on the island! The club has been put to bed for yet another winter season. Everyone who attended the fall work parties put forth their best efforts to ensure everything was done correctly for a successful spring awakening. Thanks to all who were involved, great job! Congratulations is in order for our 2019 Rear Commodore Glenn Nixon and his Lady Sheila. I would also like to congratulate the newly elected directors; Tom Altobelli, Frank Corcoran, Tom Huntley and John Sweier. I look forward to working together!
I would like to wish our Snowbird friends a warm Farwell, you will be missed over the winter; please stay safe and we will see you in the spring! As for the rest of us staying in snow country, there are a few events to attend to get your boating friend “fix” and keep in touch: • The ABYA Ball and Christmas party is on December 1 st , please reach out to P/C Pat Carroll if you are interested • The First Mates Christmas dinner is on December 4 th , if you are interested in attending, please reach out to Diane French • The NCYC 2019 Commodore’s Ball will be on January 19 th , 2019 -- please mark your calendars and there will be more details to follow Thanksgiving is a special time to reflect, and to be thankful, for what we have, for the family we love, the friends we cherish, and for the blessings that have come. Hello Fellow NCYC Members, I hope all is well. Congratulations to our incoming Commodore Ian Blackburn and his Lady Marie, I am looking forward to 2019. Congratulation to incoming Rear Commodore Glenn Nixon and his Lady Sheila and a big welcome to the flag officers. Also, congratulations to returning board members Tom Altobelli, Frank Corcoran and welcome to the board members John Sweier and Tom Huntley. I am looking forward to working with all of you and the rest of the board in 2019. The last two work weekends of the year which are held to close the island for the winter, could not have gone any better. The large number of volunteers made for a lighter load for all that attended. Thanks to all of the members who volunteer their time throughout the year. That’s what makes NCYC one of the best yacht clubs on the lakes. Some dates to remember: NCYC Bowling League, from November to April. Held on the 3rd Saturday. Contact Jill Romatz for more information. ABYA Commodore’s Christmas Ball held December 1, 2018. Contact P/C Pat Carroll for more information. Save this date for sure, January 19, 2019. That is NCYC’s Commodore’s Ball in honor Commodore Ian Blackburn and his Lady Marie. Terri and I would like to wish all of you a happy and healthy Thanksgiving.
AMessage from Chaplain Art Brooks
During the last month, several NCYC families suffered losses. Beverly Tarien, a very active member for many years passed away. Her late husband, Bob, was also very involved. The father of Kevin Verkest , Roger, died . He is survived by his wife, sons and grandchildren. Mr. Verkest was very helpful to Kevin with the many NCYC projects. Kari Lynn Fringer, 26 years old, daughter of Sandra and Bob Fringer. George Alfred Pelletier passed away on October 16, 208. He was the father of Dave Pelletier. We extend our condolences to all of the NCYC extended families at this sad time. One of our hard working members, Mary Stackpoole, is on our sick bay list. The family has requested cards only, no phone calls or visitations. Also they have asked that no Facebook posts at this time. Please keep all of these members and their families in your thoughts and prayers. If you have a moment maybe you could send them a card that might cheer them up during this time of need. Following is a thought for the up-coming holiday.
“STORAGE SPACE”
Every day I find, There’s something added to my mind. But no storage space of any sort, can keep loved memories like a heart. A kiss, a place, a touch, a grin, And yes, there’s hidden tears within. Tears of love I’ll have you know, all help my tender soul to grow. Each time I set and reminisce, My spirits rise like a morning mist. And where you see my smiling face, Well, I’ve just visited my storage space. My thanks to all who have contributed, so generously to my Storage Space

Commodore’s Comments Commodore, Randy Pagel Welcome to our Labor Day weekend General Membership meeting. We have a lot to cover today so I will keep my comments short. I want to publicly thank Ken Lipowski and Julie Delauter for planning and hosting our Rendezvous for 2018. Special thanks to Glenn and Sheila Nixon for helping with these events. I also want to thank all of the Candidates for stepping up and agreeing to run for a Board position. We have the distinct pleasure of meeting them today and hearing their ideas and values as it relates to promoting the wellbeing of North Channel Yacht Club. I would ask that all of you talk with them and get to know each of them individually. One thing I do want to discuss under “Good of the Order” is the incoming rendezvous and poker runs. It has been recently brought to my attention that there are some members that are unhappy with the amount of incoming rendezvous and poker runs that take place at our club. Our Board has been doing some research as to the income generated by these events and also the frequency of these events as it compares to previous years. Our goal is to share with you the facts so you understand what has taken place this year and find a healthy balance that satisfies the wishes of the entire membership. Vice-Commodore’s Comments Vice Commodore, Ian Blackburn Welcomed new members and thanked the candidates for running. Rear-Commodore’s Comments Rear Commodore, Bill Calihan Discussed the help the members provide running the club. Thanks to the members and all the individuals running for office. Financial Report Treasurer, Brian Fringer Covered the financials through July 2018. MOTION: Moved by P/C John Anderson and seconded by P/C John Sevald to approve the Financial Report. Motion Carried ABYA Report P/C Pat Carroll ABYA has Metro Beach boat show tickets for $5. Go to their website for details. Commodores Ball is December 1 st . Thanks to the candidates. PC Beer Bust after meeting. CURRENT BUSINESS Activities – Tom Martin Doing well. Sitting around $6000. Not including what the bar did. Thanks to all the host of the activities. Clubhouse – Scott Greenfelder County inspection just done, passed. Only a few repair suggestions for items noted.

Membership Debbie Siwek Thanks to candidates. Covered the membership numbers. Publications – Ron Draper Reported that the new process of keeping the rosters and membership cards in liquor room for members that have not picked up to this point has worked out good. Only left with about 10 rosters to mail out (saved money). Beacon will have information on proper procedure for filling out the ballots. Reported that typically 25% of votes will get discarded by not following procedures. Read next Beacon on this topic. Secretary – Glenn Nixon In fine shape for workers for the rest of year. Will have paid bartenders tomorrow and Haul Out. Mentioned about voting and necessary procedures to follow. Need candidates to get their picture and bio’s ASAP so they can get mailed out with the ballots. Supplies – Dale Hall Good year, bar sales at $72K, up $10K from last year. About $28K is gross profit. Thanks to members. Transportation – Darryl Campbell All fins are running with scheduled updates, modifications and repairs being complete. Ken Lipowski Discussed the 3 outings and their success. Dianne French mentioned Commodore’s golf outing at Golden Hawk golf course. Sandy Stroh mentioned First Mates fund raiser with 58” TV raffle.
Jeff Edgerly talked about lime wedges in cocktails. Also provided announcement for upcoming Smoke on the Water event. Please park boats in east harbor fairway entrance if coming up for the day. Got 2 bands playing. P/C JD Dixon mentioned advertising is still available for the Smoke Out. Recommended candidates take advantages of this opportunity and advertise for the upcoming election. Ron Draper offered to run same ad purchased for the Smoke Out in Beacon for the rest of year. R/C Calihan update on P/C Bell and Russ Adams. Cindy Swan emotionally discussed the pot luck and its success over the years and thanked everyone. Vicki Koch will be taking over as the Swan’s are moving to Florida. Brian Roath asked Debbie Siwek about reciprocal cards for other yacht clubs. See Debbie if you want one. Commodore Pagel mentioned the concerns the membership is having with incoming rendezvous and asked for the club’s thoughts on this. Some of the comments: Raise dues to remain a private club. Won’t need the extra outside activities if we raise dues. People have called and asked for reservation from non-reciprocal/nonaffiliated yacht clubs. NCYC being thought of as any other marina. Why not hire a manager during the week to take the burden off the weekday member managers? Hosting these events does help out charitable organizations like Wertz Water Warriors. One weekday manger commented that they always had day events covers. Lion’s Club was very well behaved. $700 in tips from Wertz Warriors. Lots of comments about how well the Wertz Warriors events were staffed. Comments about NCYC’s responsibility to support community through these events. Also a big thanks to all the members for a great year. Whether you served as a weekend O D, weekday manager or chaired one of our many events, you helped moved the club forward. We cannot forget the First Mates and the Ancient Mariners who do so much to support N.C.Y.C. throughout the year. Last but not least, Commodore Randy and his Lady Linda. Thanks to both of you for your great leadership throughout 2018. We had a great season and an awesome Commodores Cruise just this past week. Thank you two again. P.S. Please don’t forget that the next two weekends we need your help to get the club ready for closing for the winter. It’s not hard and the more help the easier for all. See you next week.
