From The Editor

We’ll things are finally winding down for the year. As indicated by this month’s cover, the clubhouse is all put away and ready for her long winter rest . Each month I am challenged to come up with a nice picture for the cover that not only is relevant to NCYC, but something different. And I always worry about putting people in the picture because not everyone likes to have their picture published. So I really wanted a good picture of the island that reflected the time of year and I had none. I even though about calling Hugh and Mary Vestal to ask them to take a picture of the island for me. Well I emailed Kim Miedema to see if she may have the picture I needed. And as usual, she came through. I’m guessing she took this on one of the last Fin rides of the work party – thanks Kim! (again).

I hope everyone has a great Thanks Giving!

See you on the island (next year).

Greg Brigman NCYC Publications Director

November is the month for giving thanks. Our fore bearers made sure to take the time to sit down with family and friends to thank the year’s bountiful harvest. A fine tradition observed today. This year will be no different. Barb and I look forward to Thanksgiving, as we will be in the warm south, celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday. I’d like to thank everyone that took time out of their busy schedules to join us in closing down the clubhouse and grounds for the winter months ahead. A big thanks to my wife Barb for organizing the food

for the work parties and all of you that helped prepare, serve and clean up after the meals. A big thanks to our clubhouse director, Rich Goodman, and harbor and grounds director, Don Reiss, for taking the lead in getting all of the close- up tasks, completed. Thanks to Don Shepperson for all of your hard work this season around the club, Thank you First Mates under the direction of President Sandi Stroh, for your generosity throughout the year. Thank you Ancient Mariners, led by President Archie Archibald, for your continued support of NCYC. Thank you Board of Directors and our Board Recorder, Sue Reiss, for your dedication and hard work as you continue to serve North Channel. Thank you to all of our Week Managers and Weekend OD’S for giving your time to helping our club. Thank you to everyone who put on an event this year and especially to Kim Miedema for your contributions of energy and time to all of the activities. And a huge thank you to all of you, the membership of North Channel Yacht Club for your continued support and involvement with this fine club.

Due to the closing work parties, we’ll be able to open up our club in the spring with less difficulties.

Haul-out was a blast. Great food, great fun and great friends. Thank you Debbie Siwek, Anne Siwek and Julie Alexander for hosting a most memorable weekend.

We still have more activities and events coming up, including the November General Membership Meeting on November 9 th, reservations being accepted by Patti Archibald and the NCYC Bowling league begins on the 16 th , please contact Jill Romatz if you are interested in joining us.

Happy Thanksgiving Commodore Don Vanover

Memories … ‘ like the corners of my mind Misty water-colored memories Of the way we were … ‘. Oh yes, how true the lyrics of that song are. It seems like just the other day we were tying the boat into a slip eagerly anticipating getting into the Clubhouse for a beverage and seeing friends. Days past since then but we had a great time, didn’t we? We shared fun-filled times with our friends, laughing and partying. So … ’ it’s the laughter we will remember Whenever we remember The way we were … ‘ Wait a Minute!!! The party is NOT OVER!!! This is North Channel Yacht Club folks and we still have two months left to go this year!

I want to send out a great big THANK YOU to everyone who pitched in and helped close our Club for the season. A good portion of it got done on the first work party but believe me, the second work party was no less important. I’ve visited the Island a few times since the doors were locked and look with admiration on how good things look tucked away for the year. Special recognition goes to those remarkable folks that ventured where few have dared to go. Chuck Stroh and Brent Malik ventured into the notorious Grease Pit from where few have returned. An inspiring task as they would tell you but one you would have to experience to believe. P/C Bob Watson self-immersed himself into the deep fryers, slipping … literally … in and out of consciousness while the equipment was turned immaculately clean. No self-respecting French fry will hesitate to be thrown into those fryers. When I had called out a question about an issue, our Commodore Don Vanover popped his head out of a crawl space to answer. It turns out that our Commodore was busy UNDER the Clubhouse making sure the winterizing of pipes was going as planned. These stories don’t make the rest of the work any less important. It’s these stories that show the commitment and love for the Club that is shared by our membership. It’s our participation in even these less-than-desirable tasks that brings the success of North Channel to the forefront. Thank You. Thank you All. The General Membership meeting and Election Results went well. I want to congratulate all of those who put themselves forward in an effort to better serve our Club. This contest is not about winning or losing. The work and effort that is put in by these individuals goes well beyond any election campaign. They show what participation is all about. So, congratulate those who are stepping into their positions for next year. Congratulate those that had stepped up and tried. You had better believe that both are important assets to this Club. Finally, congratulate and thank those out-going directors of who gave you their all during their terms of office. Diane French … thank you. Greg Brigman … thank you. Kim Miedema … thank you. Thank you All. You have made this Club a better place for your efforts. ‘ … Memories may be beautiful and yet What’s too painful to remember we choose to forget So it’s the laughter we will remember … ‘.

,

No … the party is not over. Please join us and attend the General Membership meeting on November 9 th . As you’ve seen by the Fan-Outs it will be held at Barrister Gardens that evening at 6:00pm. The final meeting of the year for the membership and the 2014 Budget being presented to you. A nice place with terrific dinners. Stay involved. Share an evening with your friends. With so many folks asking for information about it, I would like to take this opportunity to mention the Commodore’s Ball for 2014. It will be held at the Con Corde Inn on January 18 th . The address is 44315 Gratiot Ave., Clinton Twp. Rooms will be available for guests and detailed information will be sent out via Invitation soon to come. It would be my honor to have you join us for this event. So ‘ … it’s the laughter we will remember Whenever we remember The way we were … ‘.

Let The Good Times Roll, V/C John Anderson

,

November already, I can’t believe how fast time went by this past year. It feels like it was just yesterday I was hauling lumber and PVC boards to the Island to begin the construction of the Boutique patio. The temperature was the same as it was this past weekend anyway. Even though the time has flown past, looking back I can say we had a lot of good times with great friends this past year. Congratulations to our newly elected board members, thank you for stepping up. I look forward to working with all of you next year. Excellent Haul Out feast

Debbie, Anne and Julie! Thank you Renee McEvoy and your First Mates crew for a well- executed annual First Mates Haul out breakfast Sunday morning, we all needed that.

Thank you Commodore Don and Barb Vanover for all that you have done for the club over this past year. Likewise, thank you to Fleet Captains Greg and Yvonne Murray for all of your hard work and the good times you provided this year. I would like to thank the members of the 2013 Forward Planning Committee for their time and efforts this year, the committee consisted of: Ed Romatz, Ron Kemp, Don Ruma, Jeff Edgerly, Kevin Verkest and Ron Latowski. We had great participation in the last two work parties to close down the Island. It was really nice to see so many jump in to help and it made the closing down process very smooth. I already am looking forward to opening the club back up next spring. Please remember the November General Membership meeting. I look forward to seeing many of you at the General Membership meeting on November 9 th at Barrister Gardens. V/C John Anderson will present his budget for 2014.

Happy Thanksgiving!!! R/C Brian McEvoy

NOTES FROM CHAPLAIN ART BROOKS

It seems that our members are doing well in the health department, having not heard anything to the contrary. This month, we celebrate Thanksgiving, a holiday when we set aside time to thank Our Father for the wonderful things he provides for us.

Here is a prayer you may be able to offer at your Thanksgiving gathering.

Thanksgiving Day Prayer

Great God, giver of all food gifts, we ask You, above all, on this Thanksgiving Day,

to give us truly grateful hearts. May we give thanks for the beauty all around us, in Your creation, in our relationships, in our families, and in our workplaces. May we never take for granted the daily gifts of good food and good friends, but always enjoy them with thanksgiving. Thank You, too, for the comfort of our homes and for the blessings of our family life. And though we sometimes feel

the heavy weight of our burdens and cares, thank You for the grace to see them through.

When we come to the end of this day, and every day thereafter, may our hearts still be grateful and our prayer full of thanksgiving.

Amen

Financial Report

Treasurer, Chuck Stroh

No financial report since I got approval at the General Membership Meeting on October 5. The budget reports with past years and actuals were distributed to the directors to make any adjustments for next year. Activities does not have a budget report because we don’t want to count on that money since we can’t predict what it will be. PC Hugh Vestal stated that activities should be in the budget. It will go to the budget committee to decide. Art Brooks requested to attend the budget meeting. Request granted. P/C Tom McHugh Midland Rendezvous will be held on March 7,8,9th. The Commodore Ball will be held on December 7, 2013. The ABYA meeting held on Sunday, October 6 was supposed to have a speaker from the Federal Government to talk about clean water, but he failed to show because of the government shutdown. Tom said that the paperwork was sent in to the IRS for our raffle license. Now we just have to wait for a response. ABYA Report

I. CURRENT BUSINESS

Activities – Kim Miedema Kim gave an updated report of activities and handed out an activities summary. The grand total was $12,064.41, give or take $100. This number is due to the member participation in our events. Activities also draws in guests. She stated that the dockage for incoming rendezvous was a large part of the club income. Kim said that PC Gary Barnard is doing a great job with the incoming rendezvous. We will need to be sure to coordinate with Gary to make sure that all the OD's and week managers are prepared for all of the incoming rendezvous so they can staff accordingly. VC John Anderson congratulated Kim on a job well done this year. Club House – Rich Goodman We are all set for the work party next weekend. Rich indicated that we are in need of a new dishwasher for the kitchen. We have put in a lot of money for repairs and it still does not work properly. He talked to the Ancient Mariners about the need and they said that they may consider contributing to this need. He will also ask the First Mates if they would consider contributing as well. He has money left in his budget that he will earmark for the project. He is looking to get a bigger one that will accommodate the larger pans. Rich also discussed the need for a new communication system between the bar and the Fins. Pat Carroll suggested that we may not need to get a new system since everyone has a cell phone and they call the club when they get onto Anchor Bay Drive. Discussion followed. Rich will look into how much a new system will cost. Harbor & Grounds – Don Reiss A discussion was held on the pavilion on the east side of the island. Research will be done to get a complete price of the project. It will then be brought to the Forward Planning Committee for consideration in the future. There is a need for storage space on the island. The water shed needs to be for club use only. VC John Anderson

NCYC Regular Meeting Minutes Page 4 of 6

suggested that a sign be placed on the shed stating that no personal items are allowed. Don will get the sign made.

Membership – Bob Carnaghi There are 3 members on the waiting list. A discussion was held about keeping the $500 initiation fee. The decision will be tabled until the January meeting.

Publications – Greg Brigman No Report. Absent excused

Secretary – Diane French A check to Hospice of Henry Ford was sent in lieu of flowers in memory of Larry Gierlowski's mother.

Supplies – Hugh Vestal Inventory is a little higher than last year. Supplies that cannot be stored will be sold at the work parties. The valves for the wands will be blown out on the afternoon of the first work party. The liquor will be put away. The beer tappers will be blown out at the second work party. Transportation – Pat Carroll There are already 4 people that paid for winter storage in the parking lot. Number 1 Fin will come out after first work party, and #2 and #3 will come out after 2nd work party. Rich asked to leave one Fin in so the glass for the shower doors can be installed. Fleet Captain – Greg & Yvonne Murray Looking forward to the 'Yacht Club Hopping Rendezvous' in Toledo on October 25-27. You can spend as little or as much as you want since this will be a pay as you go event. Please make reservations by October 11 to allow the clubs to prepare for us.
