From the Editor… Summer is finally slowing down as we have now sailed through Labor Day weekend, and the final days are now becoming cooler on the Island. Hopefully, as we mover further into September and October, we can still squeeze a couple warm weekends out of Mother Nature. Speaking of Labor Day weekend, I want to thank the weekend O.D.’s, Director Frank and Dianne Corcoran for managing the Island so smoothly on that extended holiday. Also, a special thank you to Debbie Siwek and all the First Mates who helped present the Italian Dinner to the membership. Please look inside for the up and coming such as; The Calendar of Events, Commodores Golf Outing, Casino Night, First Mates Appreciation Dinner, and NCYC Ski/Snowmobile Weekend.
See you on the Island,
Brent Malik Director, Publications
“if your ship hasn’t come in, swim out to it…”
In the blink of an eye …… I had been warned about this but at the time I just shrugged it off as a passing comment. Quite a few friends, as a matter of fact, had told me that before I knew it the year would be over and done. In keeping with that insight the Labor Day festivities have passed and Haul-Out is looming over the horizon.
Since last months’ article we’ve been busy both at NCYC and away. We have had reciprocating Clubs visit the Island as well as stops by Dinghy runs, Poker runs and Member’s guest alike. It seems that everyone marveled at the beauty of the North Channel clubhouse and grounds. That should be the feather in our caps and we should be proud of all the compliments bestowed on us. It is all of our hard work and effort that makes what we have happen. Our 2014 Fleet Captains, Ian Blackburn and Marie Pepin have been busy most recently. They have been piling on successes one after another with their planned ‘Away Games’ or Rendezvous as most would refer to them. Many thanks to all of those stepping up to help them, for that just assured success to everyone’s enjoyment. In Detroit, Milleken marina and the Deee-troit Tigers were spectacular! Everything went smoothly even to the point of selling out Milleken Harbor. We used that Rendezvous as a starting port for the Commodore’s Cruise. With a few ports in Lake Erie as our destination, we had excellent weather on all of the days that we were cruising on the lake. Many thanks go to the six boats and accompanying sailors that participated. We had my son, his wife and daughter on our boat to share the trip with us. The Blackburn’s, Brigman’s, Brooks’, Marten’s, and Stroh’s were with us. Leslie and Cinzia Leitch joined all of us at Put-In-Bay and rounded out the visit by sharing a meal and having a fun time. Again, thanks to all for making this Commodore’s Cruise so enjoyable and well- remembered. As I said earlier, time is flying by and before we know it the season will be coming to a close. Be sure to join in the activities left to us. With THE Cook-Off just around the corner, don’t miss Smoke on the Water hosted by Glick-Hart and Latowski. The final rendezvous of 2014 is at NCYC having a Casino theme to it. Watch out Las Vegas, here comes North Channel. The Commodore’s Golf Outing follows hosted by the Nixon’s and Lipowski’s. We end the month and start October with none other than Haul-Out and results of this year’s Candidates Race. In the middle of all of this fun and entertainment, please take a moment to support all of those members stepping up to run for an office of NCYC. It is with these folks that we’re going to entrust the business of our Club. Furthermore, make sure that you submit your ballot. Make sure that your voice is heard. Many thanks to all of those involved in what we do at NCYC. From running for an office, to planning an event or helping out where ever needed. It is with your hands and your interest that makes our Club as good as it is. Please continue and keep North Channel Yacht Club the BEST on the Lakes!
Let The Good Times Roll,
John Anderson NCYC Commodore 2014
It is election time at NCYC!!! Please extend an extra courtesy to those members who have volunteered to help lead our club into the future. Remember we are all friends and we should all come together for a common goal. Please do not remove any campaign signs from the grounds or clubhouse. Let all of us show our respect for everyone who is investing their time and efforts to run. I would like to extend a big Thank you to all the OD’s, Weekday managers, Ancient Mariners, First Mates, Members, junior members, and Board of Directors for their time, talents, and efforts throughout this boating season.
We are currently gathering information and seeking estimates for the many improvements and maintenance projects our island so desperately needs. If you have any thoughts or ideas and can step up and volunteer to help in any way please let me know. With the generous donation from the First Mates we have a nice kick start for the fall and spring projects. Thank you ladies for all you do for the club and for your continued support. Let us remember 911 and the wound it left on our United States of America. Take a moment to remember those that lost their lives or had their lives forever changed, those that have served and those that keep us safe. Be safe, boat safe and be thankful for what we have.
See you on the Island.
Brian McEvoy - Vice Commodore
August has quickly passed us by, but not before we squeezed as much fun out of it as possible! We enjoyed the Karaoke night, Milliken Marina Rendezvous, and Tiger's game, Commodores Cruise to Put-In-Bay, Middle Bass and Kelley's Island, Labor Day weekend, and the General Membership meeting, PC's beer bust, and Italian dinner night with entertainment. As well as an incoming poker run, rendezvous' and taking in new members along the way that we can credit to all of the fun and great times that we had. How did we do it? We did it with gusto, the NCYC way! Thanks to P/C Don and his wife Barb, Fleet Captain Ian and his wife Marie, Commodore John and wife Bev, all of the P/C’s, and The Siwek family. Not to mention the long list of giving and hardworking NCYC members that chipped in their time and efforts to make it so much fun for the other members, their families, and friends.
Sandi and I had the pleasure of joining the Commodores Cruise to the Lake Erie islands. It was an experience that we will not forget. We had great water to travel there and back, the lake gods were on the Commodore’s side. The experience further developed the great relationships that Sandi and I had already forged with those in attendance. We again learned how gracious other Boat Clubs are to incoming rendezvous clubs. At Middle Bass Island Club with their brand new facilities, they opened their clubhouse, gave us full access, and simply asked us to lock the door behind us as we left. We cooked a great group dinner and weathered a storm while enjoying their facilities, great people!! There is so much more yet to enjoy at the island. I encourage you to look at the calendar of upcoming events, get involved, help the event hosts, and support their events. You will not be sorry. Last but not least, I want to give a heartfelt thanks to those that have chosen to get involved in the NCYC elections this year. This is one of the most important donations a member, their spouse, and family can make to the club. What a great slate, we will be in good hands no matter what the outcome. If you are not sure who to cast your vote for, don't be shy, go speak with the candidates, I am sure they will welcome your questions. I wish each and every candidate good luck in their efforts to serve.
See you soon on the island,
R/C Chuck Stroh

AMessage From Chaplain Art Brooks…
As you are most likely aware of, Sharon Wood had a heart by-pass in early August. This procedure was very successful. Within two weeks after her surgery, Sharon developed a blockage in her left leg that had a cadaver vein implanted about a year ago. Because the vein was not able to carry a sufficient amount of blood, it was necessary to have her left leg amputated above the knee. Sharon is doing well, and great attitude and outlook. She will soon start her rehab for these procedures. At this time she is at home. Phone calls and cards would be helpful in lifting her spirits. Please remember Sharon and John in your prayers.
September 11 has just passed. Let us remember all of the families who suffered losses on that day 13 years ago. Many of the survivors and the victim’s families are still having a hard time dealing with this incident. In our prayers, also remember our leaders who are working very diligently to find a solution to this immense problem of terrorism.
Below is a note regarding a little one who was hurt momentarily by an adult, but responded only as an innocent child can do. I found this very heart warming.
“Some Ice Cream For The Soul”- Author unknown
Last week I took my children to a restaurant. My six-year-old son asked if he could say grace. As we bowed our heads he said, “God is good. God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if mom gets us ice cream for dessert. And Liberty and Justice for all. Amen!” Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby I heard a women remark, ”That’s what’s wrong with this country. Kids today don’t even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I Never!” Hearing this, my son burst, into tears and asked me, “Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?” As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job and God was certainly not mad
at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table.
He winked at my son and said. “I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer.”
“Really?” my son asked “Cross my heart.”
Then in a theatrical whisper he added (indicating the women whose remark had started this whole thing). “Too bad she never asks God for Ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes.” Naturally, I bought my kid’s ice cream at the end of the meal. My son stared at his for a moment and then did something I will remember the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae and without a word walked over and placed it in front of the women. With a big smile he told her, “Here this for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes and my soul is good already.

Members often go out of their way to help our Club or one another – doing what needs to be done, above and beyond! This is your chance as membership to issue them a quick Thank You and recognize them for their good efforts. If you wish to offer any members a Hy-Five, please email the
members name and reason to publications@ncyconline.com
I nominate Don & Sue Reiss for a HyFive. They had 440+ at an incoming Rendezvous Tuesday 8/19, a 225+ incoming Rendezvous Wednesday 8/20, a group of 20+ stopped in, plus 3 of the GLCC boats on Thursday 8/21. Then a incoming additional 13 boats with 30+ people on Friday. They were gracious, warm & welcoming to all at the NCYC Clubhouse & grounds that sparkled. Judy McHugh also deserves a special mention for her 'welcome well assignment ordeal’, and dock guidance to our Rear Commodore Brad Somers to get all the NCYC members and the GLCC guests into the wells and in keeping every 'happy‘!.........Yvonne Murray.

Commodore’s Comments:
Good afternoon everyone and thank you for attending this first General Membership meeting of the year. It's been a long way since the Commodore's Ball. I can hardly believe that the year is just about half over. I hope that you found it satisfactory, the few changes that we've put in place. The Board and Flag have worked hard on your behalf to make this Club of ours a better place. A lot of thank you's are to follow and I hope that you can bear with me, for every one of them is well-deserving. I would be remiss without first mentioning my rock, my counselor, the one who often bears the brunt of my frustration... my wonderful wife Beverly. Thank You. My Flag and Board of Directors are the best I've seen. There is never a meeting that they don't put their whole selves in the job they do. Each and every one of them. Thank you. What would we do without the participation of the Elite Brigade and members attending the work parties? Besides the work that is necessary to complete, it binds us together as one membership and develops bonds that last a lifetime. Thank you. If you haven't experienced working as opening manager, don't be fooled on how things just seem to get done seemingly overnight. A great big thanks goes out to PC Bob and Patti Watson for managing opening week this year. If piloting the Fin almost non-stop and accepting deliveries isn't enough, they were up to their elbows making sure all of the last minutes jobs were completed. My thanks to them, PC Tom and Judy McHugh, IT director Keith McGregor, and Linda Pagel and team, and all the rest that came up this weekend to help out. An angel, to say the least came to my rescue for the first scheduled work party. I had a huge family commitment that day. I also needed to feed close to a hundred hungry members attending the work party. Debbie Siwek and her girls, Anne and Julie, volunteered their skills at calming the hungry masses. They not only prepared, but served lunch that day with compliments still being heard about it all. Thank You. Of course my gratitude goes out to the First Mates and Ancient Mainers for the help and donations they invest in this Club of ours. If I haven't mentioned you for helping out, it's not because you were forgotten. I have a reputation to live up to as a Short-Winded talker. If I didn't get a chuckle out of you with that comment, then you weren't around for the "The Speech that Never Ended" I gave a few years back.
I hope that you all enjoy this season It was planned for you in mind. Make sure that you participate in these events. It's a sure way to meet and make friends.
Most of all. enjoy the celebration and remembrance this weekend. A lot of good men and women sacrificed their all for us to enjoy what we have now.

V ice-Commodore’s Comments:
Vice Commodore, Brian McEvoy
Welcome back to everyone. Summer is finally here. Renee and I are happy to be here. Commodore John gave me two jobs this year to accomplish before opening day. One: Lots of snow for water this spring and I did that job very well. Two: Clear skies, and sunny weather for this weekend. That was also accomplished. Renee and I are taking notes for next year. Starting with the Commodore Ball. Looking forward to this year and next year as well. Thanks to everyone for all your support.
Rear Commodore, Chuck Stroh
Rear-Commodore’s Comments:
I would like to start out by repeating what Commodore John said earlier about thanking all the men and women who have served our country. That is what this day is about. Sandi could not be here today because of family commitments. She sends her apologies. I am looking forward to working under Commodore John and the Board this year. One of the things I have said over and over is how I loved the volunteerism, the role up your sleeves of all the people who come out and help. The island looks beautiful, thanks to all who helped. Looking forward to a great year with all the new members and the old friends. Frank welcomed all of the new members. Frank did a wrap up of the 2013 financials that were available on all the tables. Going forward, some of the information looks different. The reason being is there is more clarity and transparency. One system generates all information for the club. Frank recapped the income and expenses to run the club for 2014. He did a review of the balance sheet, cash flows and profit & loss. He also did a summary by class of budget versus expenses. To keep things on a fun note, Frank did a little quiz by giving everyone the numbers of the bar, and asked if anyone knew what year the numbers where from. After many guesses, it was revealed that the year was 1999. Financial Report Treasurer, Frank Corcoran
Motion: Moved by PC Paul Jarvis to accept the Financial Report. Seconded by PC Cass Klapec.

I. CURRENT BUSINESS
Activities - Bob Carnaghi
The North Channel family has quite a few activities this year including The ABYA Dinner Dance on May 31. Chuck and Sandi has stepped up to host Kid's Day on June 14. They are requesting donations for the raffle. The Ancient Mariners are hosting the Horse Races once again. This will be on July 12 and they are also in need of donations. Terry Hart and Ron Currie will be hosting the Smoke out in September. If you would like to participate in the cooking, please contact Terry or Ron. We also have several incoming rendezvous this year. They include, Sand Point, Jefferson Yacht Club, Cleveland Yacht Club, and Nautical Mile Yacht Club. We are looking forward to hosting them and maybe even acquiring a few new members. There a few open weekends this year, so if you would like to sponsor an event, let me know. Good afternoon. Just five weeks ago the Elite Brigade came to the island to start the process of getting the island ready for the summer season. The teamwork was phenomenal. The First Mates made contributions of furniture in the Managers Apartment and the bar area. The bathroom in the Managers Apartment is now complete and we have redone the kitchen. A special thanks to Hytham and Nancy Aljida for supplying the cabinets in the kitchen. The First Mates and the Ancient Mariners have made significant contributions to the Manager Apartment project. Kerry Steinmacher went through all the fire extinguishers inside and outside and made sure they are all working. Hope everyone is pleased with the way the clubhouse looks. Have a great summer. Clubhouse - Rich Goodman
Harbor & Grounds – Don Reiss
Don welcomed all the new members. He thanked the membership for all of the work that was done at the work parties. The grounds look great thanks to all of you. I just wanted to let everyone know that there are now cleats out on the North Channel on the North East corner of the walkway. These cleats will be helpful for everyone to put there smaller boats out there on the wall if they don't fit in your well or when all wells are taken.
Membership- Brian Malik
Brian recapped the member dues. He indicated that we are about 15-20 members short of our goal. We had 10 members resign, 4 of who owed money for work or pay, two members were expelled, and one member passed away. Brian indicated some of the shortfall in funds was due to the reduction of the initiation fee from $1,100 to $750. This
NCYC General Membership Meeting Minutes Page 5 of 9
reduction is temporary, but it did bring in new members Discussion followed. Brian said that we have 151 boating members, 27 non boating members, and 55 senior members, which is 233 total paying members. We also have 30 junior members. Two members are on leave of absence. We have 9 new members, and 5 new junior members. Brian thanked Kim Miedema for help in getting the roster up to date.
Publications- Brent Malik
Brent thanked all of the members that advertised in the Beacon and the roster. Anyone interested in advertising in the Beacon should contact Brent. Brent also thanked Kim Miedema for her help with the roster. Thanks to the First Mates and the Ancient Mariners for giving an update for those clubs for the roster. Since this was his first time as an OD for the club, Brent wanted to thank his whole staff for all of their support.
Secretary – Randy Pagel
Randy thanked everyone for their cooperation in setting the summer work schedule. He appreciated all of the comments and suggestions that were provided to him. There are still some open slots for this summer. Help is needed for July 11, July 25, August 29, September 26, and October 3. Please contact Randy if you can help on any of those weekends. Supplies – Hugh Vestal Hugh thanked PC Bob and Patti Watson for all of their help in getting the club open. There a few changes at the bar this year. We have new lines for the wine tappers, this will make for a better tasting wine. We will have wine available by the bottle. Since there has been some questions about bar sales, Hugh passed out a flyer, and also put one on the bulletin board that details the bar sales. Hugh reminded everyone how to pour a correct drink. It is one full pour and then a little pour. Please do not do double or triple shots, that is where we lose money. According to the State of Michigan, we are able to let members who would like to bring in their own bottle of wine to do so. There will be a $15 corkage fee for each bottle brought into the clubhouse. Discussion followed.
Transportation – Pat Carroll
Welcome to the new members, and welcome back to our existing members. Fin I was sanded and painted this past winter, and a new control was put in to make the boat easier to operate. Please keep the boats clean, drive them like they are your own boats and they will last us a long time. Thank you.
NCYC General Membership Meeting Minutes Page 6 of 9
Fleet Captain - Ian Blackburn
We have three rendezvous set up this year. Club Island is July 18,19,20. It is an island swap, where we will go to their island and they will come to North Channel. There are 30 slips available and we now have 18 boats signed up. The second rendezvous will be to Milliken's Marina on August 15,16,17. We will be going to the Tigers game on the 16th. We have the whole marina of 28 wells. We have room for one more boat. The third rendezvous will be here at North Channel on September 19,20,21. It will be a casino night with chips for the various games. The chips will be included in the price of the rendezvous. Thanks to everyone who offered support for these rendezvous.

Topic # 2 First Mates: President Kathy Bell
Kathy Bell stated that the First Mates painted the managers apartment, put in a new floor in the kitchen and purchased a new couch for the living room. We also purchased a new couch for the bar area. The First Mates members approved another $2,000 for the new generator. That brings the total First Mates contribution for the generator to $7,000. Barb Vanover and Diane Marten are selling tickets for two gift baskets. This is a First Mates fund raiser and all of the money raised by the First Mates goes back into the club. Thank you
Topic #3 Ancient Mariners: President Archie Archibald
Archie reminded everyone that the North Channel Downs Horse Races will be held on July 12th. This event raised $12,000 last year to pay down the debt for the club. Dinner tickets for tonight's Steer Roast are still available. Please pick up your tickets before dinner to avoid confusion, see Patti Archibald.
PC Harley Burris stated that he has one weekend open in September. Your help to fill this position would be greatly appreciated.
Rae Ann Whyard asked if there were any plans to replace the awning in the East Harbor. Commodore John stated that there are no current plans to replace the awning at this time due to the expense of the awnings. The board is looking for input on ideas for shade in the East Harbor. Chaplain, Art Brooks, wanted to let the new members know that if you need to send a fan out to the membership, just send me an email and I will get the fan out sent. Also, for your convenience, there is a list of the churches in the Algonac area on the bulletin board. Larry Geirlowski requested that we have a small refrigerator in one of the rooms upstairs for medication or special dietary needs. He also thanked the membership for all the cards for his recent illness. Dave Lockhart stated that in years past, a member had to come up on Wednesday of a holiday weekend to get a well. Now it seems more important to come early to get a parking spot on the mainland. He wanted to remind everyone that this is a yacht club. He also stated that he felt the discrepancy in the bar area seemed to be taken lightly by the membership. Kim Miedema, Chairman of the Marketing Committee stated that their mission is to get new members. Any ideas would be appreciated, such as why you joined the club and what you like about being a member. She wanted everyone to ask their friends to join. We will have passes for prospective members for a free night stay, with one paid night, and also one free drink ticket. Pat Adams commented that the screens on the windows are in bad shape, and don't seem to fit properly.
Bob Swan wanted to let everyone know that we now have 101 paver stones. If you are interested in a stone, please contact Bob.

Commodore’s Comments:
Commodore, John Anderson
Here it is August already. Even though this is going to be a busy month, it seems that the season is flying by! Keep up the good work that you are all doing. I get a lot of comments from members complimenting us on the good time that they are having this year and it's because of your efforts that this is possible. General Membership Meetings are scheduled for the end of these next two months. Let's be prepared and give the Membership reports on what each one of us is doing in our areas of responsibility. They deserve to know what you, as a Director, are doing for them to make our Club a better place. In addition to the business of the Club, an issue of great importance is the elections which is also starting at the end of this month. Please support those who have stepped up to run for an Office. Encourage those who have yet to make the commitment to help keep our Club running. It is better to give our members choices of candidates rather than a bare bones slate.
Stay active and keep our member's needs in mind. Thank you.

Rear-Commodore’s Comments:

The weeks are flying by. We had an interesting week end. It started out with PC Rick & Jill Romatz and VC Brian and Renee McEvoy as week managers. We had Sand Point come in for the weekend and the weekend was enjoyable. Thanks to Mike Linden and friends for the free Steel Drum music on the patio in the afternoon. John Moore was coaching us on how to encourage people to step up and get involved. Words from the board will help people make a decision to get involved and also become candidates for the Board and Flag.
Financial Report
Treasurer, Frank Corcoran
There was no formal financial report given due to the timing of the meeting. Financial reports will be given at a special Board Meeting on August 25, 2014. Frank handed out a report on the bar sales. It compared year to date bar sales from July 21, 2013 to July 20, 2014. The report
