North Channel Yacht Club September 2023 Beacon

From The Flag As we enter the last week of our club’s season, Rachel and I would like to thank the entire membership for a great 2023 season at the North Channel Yacht club. You must admit that the weather started out slow however rebounded and the camaraderie at NCYC has been second to none. The attendance at all our events on the island have been great and the rendezvouses were nothing short of amazing. VC/PC Rick and his first lady Jill have been busy organizing the Commodore’s ball which is February 3rd, 2024, as well as a fun filled and action-packed 2024 season. The flag and board of directors would like to thank all the candidates that have stepped forward for the election on Haul-out weekend. The nominating committee has put together a great slate this year. We wish all the best of luck. This calendar year the membership has completed several large projects including the final section of the seaway, building our new garage, and installing the second walk-in cooler. We have a lot to be proud of and much to be thankful for as we continue to improve our great club year after year. In 2023 we went back to an annual membership enrollment, and it has been well over ten years since we have had a wait list at NCYC. We currently have 23 applications on the wait list as of the end of September. However, please continue to bring the “high-quality” people in your life to the club as your guests. Our members are our best recruiters, and we simply ask that you sign in with all your guests and ensure they observe the rules of NCYC while they visit. We think you will agree that the club sells itself and a strong membership is what makes NCYC a great place to be. Again, thank you to all our members for their dedication in making this the greatest club on the lake. See you at the October General Membership Meeting. Your Flag,

CHAPLAIN NOTES SEPTEMBER 2023

Since the last Beacon was published it seems our membership is doing pretty well. I have not been made aware of any in our NCYC family who have been diagnosed with a new illness or that are currently in the hospital. Pray for those continuing to fight diagnosed illnesses and for those who have recently lost a loved one. I was on the island the other day and couldn’t help but notice maple trees in the area starting to change color. The air felt of fall as I finned back to my car. I felt, it’s sad we will be saying, “See you” to our NCYC family soon. I’m definitely going to make the most out of the weekends and our time together that’s left this summer.

God’s Art Gallery God’s world is full of beauty Everywhere our eyes may look, From the splendor of the ocean To the tiny babbling brook; The blue sky and the sunshine, Lovely seashells on the sand, Winging birds in flight and splendor, Colorful flowers to grace the land. Large oak trees that are swaying

As the wind begins to blow; All four seasons change on schedule, From the different colors to pure white snow.

I don’t know of another gallery With great art as fine as this; No other artist could portray Such splendor, wealth and bliss. Francis Culp Wolfe

Correspondence

Following items read by Secretary:

A note from PC Denise Huntley:

NCYC Family – Thank you so much for the beautiful planter. Every time I look at it I’ll be reminded of the countless friends we have at NCYC, encouraging us through my new journey. We hope to see you all on the island soon. Blessings, Denise & tom Huntley

Request from Janis DeGregory:

I am requesting permission to bring to the island our board of directors and ambassadors of the Anchor Bay Chamber of Commerce to use the island for lunch (hot dogs and hamburgers we will bring and use a couple of grills) from 11am to 1pm Friday September 22nd. I will be picking up the tab for the bar for all of the attendees. We anticipate about 20 guests. Of course, we will need the Finn to transport us all. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Janis

Motion: Philip Maniaci to approve the above Member’s request, pending approval of respective Weekday Manager. Second: Al Douglas. Motion Carried

Request from Diane French:

Hi Mark,

First of all, I would like to thank the BOD, Ancient Mariner's and the First Mates for the beautiful basket of plants and flowers. My Florida neighbor would like to thank you also for the beautiful bouquet that was sent to my Florida address. SORRY for the confusion. I would like to make a suggestion for us "Florida in the winter" people that we have both addresses listed in the roster. I would also like to request a pass on my work hours this year because of my knee replacement surgery. I am doing well but not quite ready for that. I am saving my energy for the Commodore's Golf Outing that I am sponsoring. I have several volunteers to help that day. So, I should be good to just sit and supervise.

Thank You in advance for your understanding of this matter.

Diane French

Motion: VC Romatz to approve the above Member’s request for 2023. Second: PC Hall. Motion Carried

NCYC Regular Meeting Minutes August 17, 2023 Page 4 of 12

Request from Lisa Berry:

To Whom it May Concern:

My husband and I are both signed up for 8 hours each but as you may recall I am still healing from a left knee injury. I tore my ACL, LCL and Meniscus after falling. I went through intense physical therapy and I’m healing but I will not be able to stand for 8 hours as I have in the past doing bar service. I have come a good ways but I have a ways to go, they say it can take a year or more, I don’t want to suffer any setbacks. I am still using a knee brace and cane for uneven/unfamiliar ground.

I appreciate your consideration.

Lisa Berry

Board disposition: Secretary to email Ms. Berry, referencing NCYC Policy which states 20 hours work requirement is applicable to the “Membership”, not the individual Member. Waiver denied.

Received from Member:

To the Board of Directors,

I would like to make you aware of a very unfortunate situation that occurred last evening at NCYC in the clubhouse. Just going to state the facts: At about 7p, Keith and I arrived with Dave and Debbie Lockhart. We docked in the guest wells. Brought them to NCYC to say hello and visit with Brian Malik and Lori Abry, in town from their Florida residence, who were working finn and bar last night. When we entered the clubhouse, the (4) of us stopped at the bar window to see Lori, who was right there (not serving anyone else at the time). Meanwhile, several members/friends came and said ‘hi’ to the (4) of us, preventing us from immediately proceeding down the hallway to the guest book for sign in. However, in less than the 2 minutes that we were standing there with other members, the Fleet Captain and the Commodore (separately) approached the GUESTS (not us, but our guests directly) and said they needed to sign in. Dave went to sign in, signed in as a guest of Brian Malik (who, as I mentioned earlier, they came to say ‘hi’ to - and is the member). The GUEST (again, not us, or Brian Malik, but the guest directly) was approached again by the Commodore, and said he needed to put Lori Abry’s name down as ‘guest of’, not Brian Malik . Lori overheard this from behind the bar, stepped in and reminded the Commodore that Brian was present, but was fulfilling his work obligation and was driving the finn at that particular moment. Jeff Edgerly (Weekend OD) also was present and asked what was all the commotion about; Jeff acted totally respectfully and as OD wanted to understand and try to resolve the situation. We visited peacefully with many of the other members in the bar area, had a couple of cocktails (that we, the members purchased, respecting all of the bar rules - happily and understandably). We left the island around 830p. We left embarrassed that NCYC would treat any GUEST in such an

NCYC Regular Meeting Minutes August 17, 2023 Page 5 of 12

unwelcoming and bullyish manner. We left wondering why the GUEST was approached on any of this directly, and not the member (either Keith/Erin, who traveled with the guest; or Brian/Lori, who the guest came to visit). Too bad this is behavior by (2) board members had to put a damper on a good night. Not sure this is the reputation that we want for NCYC to have within the Lake community. My intent in writing this letter is to make the Board aware and to address the issue, so that this behavior is not repeated with any future guests (or potential members).

Sincerely,

Erin McGregor

Board disposition: Secretary to inform Member that her email was read at Board meeting.

1) We had one more tree topped in the middle of the yard on 8/14 and I would like to thank all that helped out with the cleanup. We have 5 more trees to go and they will be completed.

2) I am excited to announce that all the new yard lights are now working off photocells as they should thanks to PC Callahan. And if you were part of the installation team you know the problems we had with the pesky electrical wiring. Once it was sorted out it was an easy peasy fix 3) Again, as I said in July meeting: I will be looking for a few helpers once again to help with cleaning of the BBQ’s and getting them back into tip top shape so your BBQ experience at the island will be second to none. Please keep a look out for the fan out. Also please let someone know if you notice a shortage of full bbq tanks so we can get them refilled in a timely manner.

What’s Different About Fall Boating? 3 On-Water Safety Tips

Plus, a deep dive into choosing your winter boat cover from the nonprofit BoatUS Foundation

SPRINGFIELD, Va., Sept. 20, 2023 -- For some boaters, fall is the best time for boating. Summer’s steamy days have surrendered to more comfortable temperatures, angling improves, and winds are stronger for sailing. It’s also time to embrace extra boating safety efforts for the season and look ahead to how you’re going to store your boat this winter. The nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has three boating safety tips to consider, as well as some test results on the four main types of winter boat covers. 1. Take safety seriously. If you ask the U.S. Coast Guard about boating safety and drowning, they’ll tell you that three of every four boaters who drowned in 2022 were using vessels less than 21 feet in length at the time (when boat length was known in the accident statistics). The BoatUS Foundation says that small boats in particular are more susceptible to the effects of stormy weather. During leaf-peeping season there’s also more solo boat operation, which means it’s wise to wear a life jacket and file a float plan so someone can raise the alarm if you fail to return. A self-boarding ladder, such as a length of multi-looped rope anchored to a cleat, should be easily grabbable from the water. 2. Keep up with maintenance. Like many boaters, enjoying summer boating season was primary. Secondary was toiling over the things that broke, leaked or came apart. Ensuring your vessel remains reliable is important as there are fewer potential good Samaritan boaters – generally your closest rescuers – to provide help, if necessary. 3. Use your engine cutoff switch. While all states require an engine cutoff switch (ECOS) use for PWCs, seven states and the U.S. Coast Guard also require ECOS devices for boats. The Coast Guard’s rule requires ECOS wear when aboard vessels less than 26 feet traveling on plane or above displacement speed. The ECOS can be located at the helm of the boat or on the tiller or body of an outboard engine and typically connects to the boat’s operator with a lanyard. Some ECOS devices eliminate the lanyard and rely on wireless proximity devices to shut down an engine if the operator goes overboard. Regardless, an accidental fall overboard could quickly turn dangerous. Make your ECOS your boating friend this fall. Look for a winter boat cover. Have you ever considered using a reusable winter cover instead of shrinkwrap? The BoatU.S. Foundation recently put a number of common boat storage covers to the test. Some findings include: “Waterproof” and “water-resistant” covers are not the same; boats on rack storage may have no other choice than shrinkwrap due to safety reasons; and ensuring all-winter-long survival of any type of boat cover includes making sure the cover is well-supported and adding padding to a boat’s hard edges and tops of all cover support poles. The full report, Foundation Findings #60: What You Need to Know About Boat Covers for Winter Storage, can help boaters fairly evaluate reusable, more environmentally friendly options. BONUS:
