Commodore Glenn Nixon
Sheila and I hope our members continue to be safe and healthy. We are very pleased with the way the season is progressing.
August was another active month. Thanks to all the members and guests who participated in the Ancient Mariners and Wine Tasting events. Big thank you to Kim Scicluna for organizing the very elegant and successful wind tasting event and P/C Randy Pagel for organizing the Ancient Mariners event. We understand Kim Scicluna is already planning for an expanded wine tasting event for next year. Watch for fanouts on the event as it sells out quickly. We are extremely grateful for all the members who stepped up to help with all the food preparation, serving and cleanup. These events could never take place without the hard work and support of many members. We thank all of them for helping make the events very special. We had an outstanding rendezvous at St. Clair Harbor August 13th-15th. We had perfect weather, exceptional food and refreshments, great entertainment and a great turnout. Thanks to our Fleet Captains Scott Goemmel and Michele LaCombe for handling all the logistics. Big thank you to Sharon Javery and Kim Scicluna for organizing the Saturday golf scramble - everyone had a blast!
We are looking forward to a very busy September with Labor Day Weekend, Commodore's Golf Outing on September 11 and the epic Smoke on the Water rib cookoff on September 18th. Reminder to all members we have a General Membership Meeting on Saturday, September 4th at 1pm at the Clubhouse. As Members of this great Club, we have a very important duty to fulfill in electing members to the Flag, Board of Directors and Cash Reserve Committee. In addition, there will be a ballot item recommending a change in our By-Laws to clarify eligibility to run for the Flag. Please make every effort to attend this very important meeting.
We hope to have good participation in the General Membership Meeting and at all the fun September events.
Glenn Nixon
Commodore - North Channel Yacht Club
From the Bridge – Vice Commodore Dale Hall
We would like to congratulate Commodore Glenn and his Lady Sheila for two great Rendezvous
through July & August. This past weekend at St. Clair was an outstanding event and very well attended by NCYC members. The weather was perfect, the food was outstanding, and the entertainment kept the party going late into the evening on Saturday. These events continue to be very popular with our membership and we encourage all members to get involved. NCYC still has many great events planned this year with the sold-out Wine Tasting in August, the Past Commodore (PC) Beer Bust, the Commodore’s Golf Outing and Smoke-On-The-Water in the month of September. I would like to welcome Terry Steinmacher to the Board of Directors. Thank you, Terry, for your time and your willingness to get involved for the betterment of NCYC. Terry’s appointment to the position of Harbor & Grounds Director came in Mid-July and he has already jumped into several projects and had made great progress. Thank you, Terry, for your dedication to NCYC. Our Weekday Managers and the Weekend OD’s continue to work very hard to ensure a clean clubhouse and follow our cleaning protocols. The island has never looked better and the clubhouse air conditioning is providing some well-deserved relief for all our members. Please ensure that you, your family, and any guests that come to the island are feeling well and understand all our policies at NCYC.
Also, ensure that they are cleaning up after themselves and not leaving a mess on the clubhouse tables or outside patio area. Tonight, we will be reviewing the list of volunteers that have raised their hand for next year’s Cash Reserve Committee, Board of Directors and Rear Commodore and I want to personally thank everyone that has volunteered. The volunteerism at NCYC continues to be very impressive with many new members stepping up to learn more about the club and getting involved. Please encourage everyone to get involved and “learn the ropes.” See you on the Island, V/C Dale
From the Bridge – Rear
Commodore Brian Fringer
It is hard to believe we are already nearing Labor Day. However, we still have a lot of summer left and a lot of great events to come. Please plan out attending. I would like to welcome Terry Steinmacher to the Board of Directors. Thank you, Terry, for your time and your willingness to get involved for the betterment of NCYC and I am looking forward to working with you. I would also like to thank all our volunteers who have decided to throw your hat in the ring for next year’s open positions. Thank you, RC Brian
Fleet Captain Chaplain ABYA
Fleet Captain Report It’s hard to believe that it is already September, Fall is approaching, and our NCYC Rendezvous’ are all finished. WOW, yet again time sure flies when you are having fun!!! Michele and I would like to thank Commodore Glenn for appointing and trusting us to plan and deliver fun trips for our club. COVID of course made planning activities this year a huge challenge, but in the end, we all figured it out and had a blast! In a recent Fan Out we thanked many people that helped us ensure the Fleet activities were a success. We want to again thank Glinda Mantyk for making some really cool names tags for the St Clair rendezvous. With so many newer members, this was a great idea and something we should consider in the future! Many members know the behind the scenes work it takes to have such large parties and fun. The appreciation that was shared with us by many members was very welcomed. And now it is our turn to thank all of you for your support and the fun we had this year!!
And now on to being “past” Fleet Captain’s, a tradition we look forward to sharing with others!
Thank you so much, Scott & Michele Goemmel
A Message from Chaplain Mark Javery
Again over the past month our NCYC family has suffered heartache with the passing of loved ones
and the distress of illness and injury. On August 2nd P/C Cass Klapec passed away. On August 18th Donald & Laura Carnaghi’s son Kevin Carnaghi passed away after a long battle with diabetes. On August 28th Joanne Hilden’s daughter Meghan Hilden passed away suddenly. Continue to pray for the Klapec, Carnaghi, and Hilden families as they are processing and grieving the loss of their loved ones. Member Julie Busch is anticipating at least one surgery on her arm as she recovers from a bicycling accident received while on a charity ride. Member Cindy Sutter’s son Graham continues to face procedures as he recovers from a motorcycle accident. Pray for successful procedures, God’s grace as they manage their pain, and for quick recoveries. Also continue to pray for those in our membership who are suffering illness and names are respectfully withheld. Pray their doctor’s will have wisdom in treatments and they will feel God’s healing and comforting hand upon them.
Labor Day Musings…..
My research indicates the first known Labor Day Event was a parade in New York City on 9-5-1882. It seems that the idea spread until it is the recognized holiday we now all enjoy. I then started to read God’s word on the topic of work and labor and found so many references as to how we should approach work and what attitude a Christian should have towards it. God himself has worked from the beginning and in the gospel of John Jesus stated that He and His Father are constantly working. In Genesis when God created man he placed him in the Garden of Eden to work it and care for it. In Proverbs God talks about those with lazy hands versus those whose hands are diligent. God’s word is also clear that work is not a curse but part of our created purpose. It is also good to note that while idleness is bad, rest is good and endorsed by God. So my friends…..Work hard, rest well, and glorify God in all you do! Be good to one another, stay kind, stay humble, and may God bless you! Looking forward to seeing everyone Labor Day weekend.

Any member that would like to make a donation can mail a check made out to NCYC First Mates, to Ellen Alcazar, 10499 Otter Drive, South Lyon, MI 48178. There are also donation jars on the bar at the club. The new furniture has arrived and looks great! On your next visit to the club be sure and take a peak or a sit on the new sofa and loveseat purchased by the First Mates. Great place to watch a little TV or just visit with a friend.
