2022 - March - Beacon

NCYC March 2022 Beacon

March 2022 Flag Comments We would like to send a big thank you out to the Board of Directors, Past Commodores and members that attended the Commodore’s Ball. Based on feedback, the venue and the food were a big hit. Special thanks to the George Brothers Band for keeping the dance floor full all evening. Unfortunately, because of restrictions the ballroom was closed at 11:30PM but, the After-Glow party was also very well received. Thank you to everyone that attended. We hope you enjoyed the evening as much as we did. The Flag and Board of Directors have been working to plan the opening of NCYC for the 2022 boating season. There are several springtime projects that are already under way at NCYC. 1) Fin 2 will be receiving some major repair work to stabilize the hull. Fin 2 will be moved to an inside location on March 7 th so that work can begin and be returned to the parking lot, ready to launch by late April. 2) The walkway between the Boatique and D-Dock will be under construction starting in Mid-April. Quotes were received and Bret Kahl from Ron’s Marine won the bid to start the steel work in Mid-April. The Elite Brigade & Work Parties will finish all the wood work in late April and early May. We will begin the Elite Brigade weekends on Saturday April 16 th . The following 3 weekends (April 23 rd , April 30 th and May 7 th ) will round out the remaining

weekends. These weekends will satisfy any members 4 hours of required work for opening the club. There will be many projects to keep us busy, so we encourage you to come out early and fulfill your hours. If Elite Brigade does not work for you, May 14 th & May 21 st are the official work party dates. As a reminder, Fitting Out weekend will be May 28 th & 29 th with the First Mates Meeting and General Membership meeting on Saturday and Flag Raising Ceremony on Sunday. At the NCYC Board of Director’s February meeting, a vacancy on the Board of Directors was addressed. In January, we accepted the resignation of our Treasurer and in accordance with the NCYC By-Laws, a nomination was made at our next Board of Directors meeting. At the February meeting a motion was made to consider Marie Pepin as a new director on the NCYC Board. The motion received a second and was approved unanimously. Effective immediately, Christa Betts will become the new Treasurer and Marie Pepin will become the Membership Director. (Please see the updated, complete list of Flag Officers and Board Members on a later page in the Beacon) Two additional events that were discussed at the Board of Directors meeting were the upcoming Blessing of the Fleet at the Mariners’ Church of Detroit, starting at 3PM on March 13th. The Flag also looks forward to supporting the First Mates during their 2022 Fashion Show scheduled for May 1 st . For all our members that are enjoying the winter in a southern state or for everyone vacationing, please travel safe and we look forward to an early Spring and seeing you at the Elite Brigade weekends. Thank you to everyone in advance for your dedication and for finding ways to use your talent to better our club.

Commodore’s Comments

Commodore, Dale Hall

Commodore’s Comments Welcome to 2022, Colleen and I would like to wish everyone a Very Happy New Year. We know that everyone is looking forward to 2022 and all the opportunities that a new year brings. It is truly an honor for me to serve as your Commodore this year. Colleen and I are looking forward to the Commodore’s Ball on Jan. 22 nd . A special thank you to Past Commodore Glenn and his lady Sheila for their tireless work serving the club and providing leadership through another very challenging year. Once again, the entire club pulled off a very successful boating season and had a lot of fun in the process. We have a lot going on in 2022 and we will need a lot of preparation to get ready for our opening on Friday May 27 th , 2022. This evening we will start a lot of that planning so please stay engaged and look for opportunities to volunteer, participate and most importantly ensure we are moving the NCYC in the right direction. Our agenda is very full but, we will move quickly and ensure that everyone gets to contribute.

Thank you to everyone in advance for your dedication this year and for finding ways to use your talent to better the club.

Commodore Dale

Vice-Commodore’s Comments Vice Commodore, Brian Fringer Happy New Year and thank you to P/C and Sheila and all of your hard work during 2021. Opening club in 4.5 months and looking forward to another great season.

Rear-Commodore’s Comments

Rear Commodore, Scott Greenfelder

Hello to all NCYC members. I’d like to welcome all of you to 2022. I can’t believe we are slowly coming into our third year of the pandemic, and I would like us all to take a moment to remember the ones we have lost. Our lives and the lives of our loved ones are very precious and cannot be taken lightly, so

January 13, 2022

let’s try and be kind to one another. That should rollover to way we treat each other once the club is open as we never know when we may need a club members assistance. I am looking forward to the Spring and getting the club in shape and ready for what I hope is a tremendous year. Under Commodore Dale and his Lady Colleen along with his dynamic duo Fleet Captains Kim M and Susan B we should have plenty of ways to make great memories. I am looking forward to all the activities that the Club brings us all Summer long. I hope that all of us can spend at least some of our winter in a warm and sunny location as the grey skies tend to bring even the most hardy person down. As I look out from my dining room to an empty canal I think back to coming home and going swimming or taking Nicole for a boat ride out on the lake or maybe even up to the Club to have a cool drink. I think all the good things the Club provides us will be back and sooner than we think.

Financial Report

Treasurer, Kevin Rae

A Message from Chaplain Mark Javery

Our membership seems to be doing well as since the last beacon was published, I am not aware of any additional NCYC family members who have been hospitalized, are sick, or in distress. As we observe Lent may it truly be a purposeful 40-day period of sacrifice, prayer, confession, and spiritual discipline leading up to our Easter Sunday celebration. While I ask God how I should observe the Lenten season, I try to remember where I was spiritually during Lent the previous year and reflect on what has changed and what has stayed the same. As I hear and read the familiar stories about Jesus as he approached the cross, I am reminded that while my circumstances may change the truths of the gospel will always remain the same. I love the words of Chuck Colson who described Lent as follows: “Lent affords us the opportunity to search the depths of our sin and experience the heights of God’s love.” As spring officially arrives this month and with it warming weather and nature returning to life it is a great reminder that as Christians we are given a new life and new mercies daily. Spring provides a wonderful reminder to us that we should be living a full life and leaving the old dead

parts behind us. There is always the hope that during the coldest, darkest winters of life that spring will come and with it new life.

Song of Songs 2:11-13 NIV “See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land. The fig tree forms its early fruit; the blossoming vines spread their fragrance. Arise, come, my darling; my beautiful one, come with me.”
