From the Editor… I mentioned in last month’s editorial, I was looking forward to the summer heating up! Michigan’s weather never really delivered the heat wave we were expecting. Matter-of-fact, according to local meteorologists, Detroit has only had two days in the 90 degree temperatures this year. The good news is, low summer temperatures does not forecast lower winter temps. Meteorologists stated, historically in Michigan cooler summer temperatures meant warmer winter months! Thank you to the Ancient Mariners for hosting the NCYC Horse Races which were a great success! The NCYC & CRBC reciprocal rendezvous were fun had by all, thanks to Fleet Captain Ian Blackburn & Marie Pepin and Rich & Mary Goodman as Weekend OD’s. Special thanks to the many volunteers that helped support them! I want to thank all of the NCYC membership for delivering dockside courtesy and hospitality to the incoming rendezvous this year. With NCYC being members of Anchor Bay Yachting Association (ABYA) and Inter-Lake Yachting Association (I-LYA), it is good for our Club’s reputation to act as ambassadors in our boating community and occasionally welcome reciprocal clubs to our island. As they often invite the NCYC membership to their friendly clubs to visit.

We are two-thirds though our boating season at the Club. If you have not signed up for your work hours or would like to volunteer, please contact Randy Pagel.

Please look inside for upcoming events such as the Calendar of Events, Commodores Golf Outing, and July Member of the Month, First Mates Italian Dinner, and a Special Visitor Guest Pass.

See you on the Island,

Brent Malik Director, Publications

“we can’t control the wind, but we can direct the sail…”

The Dog Days of Summer ಹ thatಬs what the month of August should be. Not rainy, cool and hoping for temperatures to break above the warm mark. Why, I spilled a cocktail in the North Channel and the ice cubes didnಬt melt until the No Wake marker! Whereಬs the Schefkeಬs? Maybe they can at least come up with a Dog Day Afternoon? The 2014 season at NCYC seems to be going right along with folks enjoying themselves and getting involved in what we have to offer. Guests and visiting Yachtsmen have been stopping by our Island and Iಬm proud to say that we have had all positive feedback from them. It is You that deserve a pat on the back for all these great responses since it is through all of our efforts that we make this happen.

This past month of July proved very successful in a number of ways. The pounding of hoofs and deafening cheers from the crowds, the colorful and artistic Derby Hats worn by the women all showcased the North Channel Downs again hosted by our Ancient Mariners. With a most worthy cause of paying down the Clubಬs debt, my thanks goes out to Ancient Mariner President Archie Archibald and Lady Patti for bringing this event back to us this year. The tireless efforts of Diane French, who for the past year has worked on securing donations and prizes, cannot be thanked enough. P/C Pete Beecherl as auctioneer extraordinaire did a tremendous job of emceeing the Races and Auction. P/C Denise Huntley, Tom Huntley and all the folks manning the betting booth and all else that went into making this happen. A resounding Thank You! Another few members deserving of recognition for their continuing efforts in supporting the Club are no strangers to the word Involvement. Part of the activities with the Horse Races is the famous Spaghetti Dinner and that was offered by a few of our NCYC chefs. Working their culinary magic was Ed and Diane Romatz, Ron and Jeanine Kemp and crew. Thank you for rounding out this event by feeding the hungry masses. I really think that these folks should be on their own Food Network show for all of the cooking that they do. Ed and Diane hosted and cooked the Captainಬs Breakfast of which Iಬm happy that they brought back to NCYC after an absence. Our Galloping Gourmets struck again at the Rendezvous at Club Island by cooking up a Lake Erie perch dinner of which was enjoyed by all. Marie Pepin insisted that they were Canadien perch because they tasted so well. I opted for diplomacy by bestowing the kudos to our cooks Ed Romatz, Ron Kemp, Steve Marten, P/C Scot Bell and Randy Pagel. Fleet Captain Ian Blackburn and Marie Pepin took center stage with the successful NCYC/CRBC reciprocal rendezvous. It was attended equally by both Clubs and from what I have heard everyone from BOTH Clubs had a good time of it. Ian and Marie put a lot of planning into this event and had started early in the year getting all of the details in place. The other two Club Rendezvousಬ should prove to be as successful with the Milliken Rendezvous already SOLD OUT and the final NCYC Rendezvous at the Island just around the corner in mid-September.

While a lot of us were enjoying Aquapalooza at Belle Maer marina, Pete and Pam Poirier had something up their sleeve to ಫone upಬ that event. They had put on a NC-Palooza at the Island bringing their Jefferson Beach boaters up to enjoy our surroundings in the Flats. A well- orchestrated happening, all seemed to go well with all in attendance having a good time and enjoying what we, as North Channel, had to offer. Thank you Pete and Pam for turning what would have been a very quiet weekend into a plus for NCYC. And the Beat Goes On ಹ Karaoke hosted by Don and Barb Vanover is taking place the first weekend in August. This always is a fun-filled evening with folks being as serious or silly as they can get. I still have a soft-spot in my heart for Country Roads by John Denver but itಬs hard to get the ಫChoir Boys of NCYCಬ together to perform. Iಬll keep looking for them. In the meantime enjoy yourselves, your family and friends, hold them close for time passes swiftly. Come on out and participate in this Club of ours. Another good friend is just a handshake away. Let The Good Times Roll, John Anderson NCYC Commodore 2014

As we head into August, itಬs time to start thinking about next yearಬs Board of Directors. Thanks to PC Tom McHugh and Committee for all of the efforts in putting together a slate of strong candidates. Thank you to all who have stepped up to run. Iಬm looking forward to working with all of you. If you are not quite ready to be a Director, but are interested in getting involved, please contact me. I have some appointed positions available. Work has begun on next yearಬs calendar. Save the date for the Annual Commodoreಬs Ball. It will be on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the ConCorde Inn. We hope to see you all there.

Many events, including a couple of new ones are scheduled and in the planning process. If you are interested in putting on an event or helping in any way, please contact me. Thank you to all of you that have volunteered so far. Thatಬs what makes this club so great! Thanks to Ian & Marie for doing such a great job on the Club Island Rendezvous. It was a great time. A little rain doesnಬt keep NCYC down! Thanks also to the Ancient Mariners for putting on another successful Horse Race Event. I always enjoy a clubhouse full of people screaming ಯNag, Nag, Nagರ! Weಬve had a lot of incoming rendezvous and guests on the island this year. While we welcome guests and appreciate every bit of revenue, I have been hearing concerns from the Membership about the number of visiting yachtsmen on the weekends. Please know that I hear what you are saying. One of the things that needs to be enforced on the weekends is to fill guest wells first. We also need to be putting boats in size appropriate wells. Moving forward, we need to strike a balance to make sure that we meet our budget while putting our members first. No one wants to feel like a guest at their own club. Even though we havenಬt had much summer weather, the summer season is flying by. There are still many weekends to take advantage of our island paradise. Iಬm looking forward to seeing you soon and hearing your thoughts, ideas and concerns.

Have a great summer. See you on the Island. Brian McEvoy - Vice Commodore

July is about gone and the island is in full swing. Things are shaping up to be another great NCYC year. The 4 th of July festivities, the Ancient Mariner’s Horse Races, the Club Island Rendezvous, visiting incoming clubs to the island, all on top of the everyday fun at the island has made July a sensational. Sandi and I had the pleasure of attending the horse races as well as the Club Island trip. They both were well supported and loads of fun. These activities take the work of many members who so continue to so generously give their time and donations to make them so successful. Thank you to the Accent Mariners and to our Fleet Ian and Marie, great job the membership all appreciate your efforts.

I’m looking forward to the upcoming events, the Milliken’s Marina rendezvous and attending the Tigers game, GO DETROIT! If you haven’t made plans for the Commodores cruse yet it’s not too late the more the merrier, Put-In-Bay here we come!

Our membership continues to grow, we are still receiving new member applications from people that I’m sure we will be fortunate to have in our extended family.

The club is running very well, I want to take the time to recognize and show appreciation for all of the weekday managers and weekend OD’s that we depend on to keep our club running smoothly week to week. Thank you very much! It is time again for nominations for the Board of Directors and Flag positions for 2015. The fan out has been sent and the hunt is on. You should give it some serious consideration, it’s a very important aspect of our club. Others have served before you so that you could enjoy what we have today at the island. I encourage you to step up, put your name in the hat, and work with us, I would be honored to serve the membership with you, let’s make a difference together. As I said last month, if you want to maximize your island fun and experience, come, get involved, help support the events, the OD’s and week managers in any way that you can. Be a bigger part of the club, see a weed pick a weed, take a minute and fix the little things, and let any board or flag member know of anything you may want addressed.

See you soon on the island,

R/C Chuck Stroh

AMessage From Chaplain Art Brooks…

As of this time, we have longtime member Sharon Wood hospitalized and scheduled for triple by- pass surgery on Tuesday, July the 28 th . Please remember her and John in your prayers.

You may want to consider the following as a lifestyle:

“Live Life to the Fullest”

One never knows what tomorrow will bring. So live life to the fullest today. Enjoy the treasures that God has given And never give into dismay. Don’t let the dark clouds get you down. Be happy and carefree in mind. Each cloud has a silver lining That you must search for and find. Always look for the good in others And life will be happier for you. Goodness and love will always make Dark skies seem brighter and blue. Love each other as God has loved you And peace will be yours to share. Know that whatever tomorrow brings Will find you safe in Gods’s care.

Greg & Yvonne Murray

“SPIRIT” is their middle name, and they have done it again!

Greg and Yvonne Murray have been selected as July Members of the month for the NCYC spirit they have always display! They so graciously volunteered to be the NCYC ambassadors for the Clinton River Boat Club rendezvous, and what a great job they did! Helping to ensure our guests had everything they needed, organizing and hosting lunch and helping the weekend manager are only a few things that Greg & Yvonne did that weekend. The most important of all, they were happy to help when the call came!

Having the Murray’s was a huge help in making our reciprocal CRBC rendezvous a success. Thank you!

Get the retirement youwant.

It’s never too soon to start planning.

Many of us have a clear vision of our retirement years. Yet, a surprising number of people have no idea how they’ll turn those dreams into reality. The fact is today’s retirement takes more than savings and Social Security. It requires a financial plan that addresses your needs, wants and how you’ll pay for them. That’s where I can help. Together, we’ll create a plan to help your money work long enough and hard enough to fund the retirement you envision. LIFEWELLPLANNED. Contact me to get started.

Commodore’s Comments:

Commodore, John Anderson

Commodore John welcomed PC Jim Angers to the meeting.

All seems to be going well these days at NCYC. We're pretty much on target for the goals that we set for ourselves at the beginning of this year. We must continue our determination to move our Club forward in all areas. Membership, social enjoyment and financial discipline. Let us not become complacent with the good times. Let us stay in tune with what our members are telling us. Keeping on top of these issues will ensure the continued improvement of North Channel. I have to extend a heart-felt Thank You to RC Chuck and Sandi Stroh for their successful efforts in putting on Kid's Day for us this year. I don't know who was happier at the event, the kids who were winning prizes and laughing with the games or me who watched all these smiling faces before me having a good time of it. Thank you Chuck and Sandi.

Please try to stay involved with the activities planned ahead of us. With that involvement, the membership sees that we practice what we preach.

Plenty of things to do coming up this month. A lot of visitors coming to see us. Let' keep the welcome mat out and show these folks what North Channel is all about.

Vice-Commodore’s Comments:

Vice Commodore, Brian McEvoy

Attendance at the Island has been a bit slow again this year to date. We need to encourage our members, and those of us here at the Board table to come frequently and participate in the Club activities and events. I have noticed many member boats are not flying our burgee. With many new members this year and last, it is important that members boats can be identified by the OD by their burgee. Let's encourage anyone not displaying their burgee to please do so in the future.

Rear-Commodore’s Comments:

Rear Commodore, Chuck Stroh

I have been remiss for missing a lot of weekends at the island lately, family obligations have prevented our attendance on several weekends. I came in on Sunday and it was a beautiful day. It is nice to see so many people coming and enjoying the island. I have a new found respect for the people who have put on Kid's Day in the past. It was a lot of work but also a lot

NCYC Regular Meeting Minutes Page 3 of 7

of fun doing that. In the future I would like to see a Picnic Day. It was fun to watch the adults have as much fun as the kids.

Financial Report

Treasurer, Frank Corcoran

Frank indicated that there was a minor net loss for the month of June of about $3,000. We had revenues of $23,000, with 50% of that coming from bar revenue. Frank introduced a new procedure for reporting expenses from the Directors at last month's meeting, where all the information is downloaded and sent to him. Due to the holiday and the timing of the bank statements, those reports were not ready in time to make the midyear report. The midyear review will be presented at the August meeting to assure that we have the correct numbers to review.

Motion: Moved by PC Hugh Vestal to accept the financial report. Seconded by Don Reiss.

Motion Carried

ABYA Report:

P/C Don Vanover

PC Don Vanover was out of town, so Commodore John attended the ABYA meeting.

The July ABYA Membership Meeting was held at Belvidere Boat Club. They reported a net profit of $2,687 for the Spring Dinner Dance and proved to be a success for them. The guest speaker at the meeting was Supervisor Shaun Reynolds of the US Customs Border Patrol. He was able to answer numerous questions concerning the function of the department and what to expect when traveling, specifically by boat between the US and Canada. The largest portion of their job is to address compliance issues when reporting in at either side of the border. The next sponsored ABYA event will be at MacRay Marina August 14-15 where the Rubber Band Boat Races will be held on that Sunday morning. Also mentioned was that the Parade of Lights will be held again this year on the Clinton River on August 2nd. The next ABYA GMM will be held at Conger Bay Boat Club at 7:30 on August 5th. When the ABYA meetings are held at Conger Bay Boat Club, NCYC typically will provide the transportation of the attendees to and from that facility by our Finrunners. We also provide Finrunner drivers.

Motion: Moved by RC Chuck Stroh to provide the Finrunners and drivers for the ABYA meeting at Conger Bay Boat Club. Seconded by Rich Goodman.

Motion Carried.

Correspondence:

A letter was received by Ron Kemp regarding the increase in the beer prices and offering free drinks to the people who are working at special events. It was discussed that the free drinks for the workers at special events will continue, but should be kept to beer or well drinks. The 25 cent increase in the beer prices was due to going from 12 ounces to 16 ounces. Secretary Randy Pagel will respond to Ron in a letter. PC Hugh Vestal also indicated that he would call Ron. Sandy Stroh wrote a letter asking the board to approve an additional TV for the kids room. Kid's Day made a profit of $1,046.09 and she was requesting $500 of that profit to purchase the additional TV.

Motion: Moved by Randy Pagel to approve the $500 for the additional TV. Seconded by Don Reiss.

A discussion was held. It was decided to table this item for a future meeting.

Motion Failed.

A Thank You note was received from PC Pete and Gale Beecherl for the flower arrangement for Matthew's funeral.

A note was received from Ford Yacht Club inviting our members to visit their facilities during the 2014 season.

A letter was received from The North American Demo Boat Show asking if we would place the information for the show in our Beacon and on our bulletin board. The show will be held at Cedar Point on August 21-24.

Clubhouse - Rich Goodman There is a banging of pipes in the laundry room. We are looking into it to find the problem. We had two freezers that broke down. One was a timer problem, and one was a relay switch. Both freezers are now working. Harbor & Grounds – Don Reiss Don stated that Ron Kahl recommended that we go with paver bricks on the walkway instead of the composite boards. It is more durable and more economical to repair. He also indicated that we will be needing a new seawall on the Robison in the near future. Don will get a quote from Ron and present it to the Board. PC Hugh Vestal stated that we need to replace some of the pedestals. Don will look into that. A discussion was held on members docking their boats in the appropriate size wells, especially on Party Weekends. Membership- Brian Malik Brian Malik was absent excused so PC Hugh Vestal gave the report. PC Hugh interviewed two new members. Mark Keitz (Kristine Blake) and Lucretia Sterling (James) Motion: Moved by Bob Carnaghi to approve Mark Keitz as a member. Seconded by Randy Pagel. Motion Carried. Motion: Moved by Rich Goodman to approve Lucretia Sterling as a member. Seconded by Don Reiss. Motion Carried.

Publications- Brent Malik No Report

Secretary – Randy Pagel Randy Pagel said that he was going to add a paragraph to the OD manual stating that the extra money in the Manager's Apartment is for reserve. It is to be used for making change for the working drawer.

NCYC Regular Meeting Minutes Page 6 of 7

Supplies – Hugh Vestal Hugh will be paring down on the inventory as it gets closer to the end of the year so we don't have as much left over as we did last year. He also returned the gas tanks to Blue Water, so we will not see any more rental fees. Ted Marini is supplying the gas for the wine and the micro brews and Coca Cola is supplying the gas for the fountain drinks.

Transportation – Pat Carroll Absent Excused

Fleet Captain - Ian Blackburn We have 28 boats for Milliken and 25 boats for Club Island.

OLD BUSINESS

Topic # 1 PC Jim Angers gave a presentation on the Glacial Energy contract. We saved 21.9% last year. In light of Glacial's problems, there was a question as to whether they would sell the company or keep it. It was decided that they would keep it. They will restructure it and rename it. The president is no longer with the company. Jim indicated that there are other companies out there that could offer us greater savings or stay with Glacial. If we stayed and Glacial went under, we would be switched back to the electric company and we would be locked in for two years. PC Jim will get quotes from other companies and get the quotes to Frank and the Board will explore options and decide the best way to proceed. Topic # 2 The By-Law Committee met to discuss the subject of Honorary Members. Their recommendation was not to admit any further HonoraryMembers into the Club, since it is not a valid classification. The two long standing Honorary Members will remain. A letter will be sent to Cheri Malleis informing her of the By-Law Committee's recommendation, and that the Board had no standing to approve her as an honorary member. She will be welcome to the island as a guest of the Commodore. Motion: Moved by Don Reiss to accept the By-Law Committee's recommendation. Seconded by VC Brian McEvoy.

Good of the Order: Randy Pagel led a discussion on the weeds in the flower beds, especially on the north side of the clubhouse. Don Reiss said that he would look into getting some weed killer for the beds.
