This month you'll notice quite a section for the Fraternal Order of the Anchor. We have more this month than we typically have in 2 full years. FYI the 44 year average is 7/year. We begin with a correction from the January Beacon. It appears we had a case of mistaken identity with our club twins Brent and Brian, (go figure) which is now cleared up. We then include our April entries because in the wee hours of the morning when I published the May Beacon I failed to include the Members of the Month after I spent several hours making the new page design. Arrrggghhhh!! Look closely at the Anchor Rode, have you ever tried to draw a hemp rope? Those ropes took a Lot of detail work to make right. I did update the Beacon in May as soon as I realized my error, but for those of you who may have seen it sans Anchor Awards, they're all here for you in this months edition. Incidentally, I was mistaken once before, hard to believe I know, but I was wrong one other time. I remember it well, it was 1972, I told my dad Nixon would survive it. So now on to this month we have several more Anchor Awards including possibly for the first time a husband and wife each receiving their own separate Anchor Awards in the same month and even a brand new member who jumped right in. This may be the beginning of a new trend, so hop on in, the water's warm, and there's always plenty to do around the club. See you on the Island. We have the Flyer for the Boat4 Vets again this year. If you can take some of these special people for a boat ride, you'll always remember the smiles you made. FYI, Pontoon boats are much appreciated for their easy boarding and passenger capacity. We were blessed with great weather for our “Fitting Out” weekend and Flag raising ceremony. It was an honor to welcome 18 new members to the Club at our General Membership meeting. That same evening we had our Steer Roast which we have not had for the past 8 years. P/C Bill Bauer and P/C Denise Huntley did a phenomenal job organizing, preparing and cooking our 685 pound steer. A great time was had by all. After our Flag raising ceremonies on Sunday, we had a great lunch prepared for us by the “Tiara” group. We look forward to this Saturday for the ABYA dinner dance. P/C Pat Carroll has tickets if you are interested in joining us. Please mark your calendars for Ladies Week. It will be starting Sunday June 10th at 6:00 PM thru Thursday, June 14th after lunch. Look for future Fan Outs for further information. Also, please make sure you fly your NCYC Burgee so we can identify that you are a member of the Club. This makes it easier on the OD. Also, please remember to take you own trash back with you on your boat. We have been made aware of members not adhering to this policy. Spring was not very nice to us and Mother Nature certainly did not want to cooperate during the work parties. Nevertheless, that did not stop the NCYC membership from getting the projects completed and the Club ready for another season. I would like to give a special shout-out to Don Shepperson, Rex Oliver and Ron Braun for their countless hours on the siding project. Without their dedication and talent this project would not have been completed. We now set our sights on the Memorial Day activities! I heard that the First Mates fashion show was a huge success and all in attendance had a great time. Thanks to all who were instrumental in hosting this event; it’s a lot of work and it does not go unnoticed. I have also had the opportunity to enjoy a sneak peek in the Boatique and the excellent selection of NCYC clothing for this season. I suggest that you do not wait to purchase your favorite logo wear, as inventory will move quickly. A brief housekeeping policy reminder regarding personal garbage, as per the club policies “It is the responsibility of any member or guest to remove his rubbish from the island, whether he arrived by boat or Fin-Runner”. Thank you for being cooperative and respectful of this policy as the OD’s, their teams, and the Weekday Managers already have their hands full with running the Club. Last but certainly not least, I would like to take the opportunity and welcome the new members. “Welcome to the NCYC family! I hope you feel at home when you are on the island. The Memorial weekend proved to be a great start to the 2018 boating season. With all of the improvment's done over the last six months, windows, siding, piling covers in the east harbor, new Weber gas grills just to mention a few and the awesome job our grounds keeper Tom Stackpoole did to have the grounds looking great and ready to go. The Membership got to meet our new caterer Friday night. He had a great menu, something for everyone. I heard they served over 170 dinners. The General Membership meeting held on Saturday was well attended and Commodore Randy did a great job chairing it. Meeting all of the new members that attend that meeting is always one of the highlights and once again welcome aboard. One of the other import things that the membership endorsed was the Robinson Sea wall project that will allow the installation of the new sea wall to begin phase one in the late fall. A big thanks to the Ancient Mariners for the donation they presented to Commodore Randy, the money will be put to good use. A big thanks to the First Mates for putting on the patio party where good food is enjoyed and friends can get reacquainted. As Rear Commodore one of my duties is to take a active part in the Memorial Day Ceremony. Presenting the Rear Commodores burgee, Bell ringer for the deceased Past Commodores and placing of the wreath of flowers into the North Channel at the waters edge along with the Commodore and Vice Commodore. I was very proud and humbled to take part in this ceremony. Captian Luke Clyburn of the Pride of Michigan and the Great Lakes Division of the US Naval Sea Cadets did a excellent job providing the Honor Guard for the ceremony. After the ceremony Father Steve was on hand as in past years to bless our fleet. Once again thank you for taking part in our Memorial Day Service. The A.B.Y.A. Spring Dinner Dance took place the following weekend at N.C.Y.C.. N.C.Y.C. is a great venue for this dance and it gives the member clubs of A.B.Y.A. the opportunity to meet and enjoy each others company. Don't forget to come out and enjoy the Tiki Bar on June 9th and hope to see many of you at the St.Clair Rendezvous on June 15, 16 and 17th.

Hi Ladies: A huge thank you goes out to Shelley Sweier for being the Fashion Show Chairperson!! It was a huge success. Way to go Shelley!! And also thank you to all those that helped with anything that had to do with the fashion show!! Your help was greatly appreciated. Thank you also to all who provided an appetizer for the patio party. And thank you to Colleen Braun who put out the pre-meeting breakfast spread and was coordinator of the fabulous patio party Memorial Weekend. Hello NCYC Members, For those who missed the last Beacon, again, let me introduce myself for those who do not know me. My name is Leslie Leitch and I have been working with the past three Commodores on organizing the use of our club from other yacht clubs and incoming rendezvous. This year Commodore Randy Pagel has established a position now known as Harbor Master. My duties are to take requests from other clubs and present them to the Board and Bridge for approval. They discuss the dates and incoming clubs by either approving the request or not based on our club’s activities for those days. The focus has been to promote clubs to come during the week more than the weekends, but there have been some approved incoming weekends that should not interfere with our members regarding available wells.. Therefore, my other duty is to notify our members of those approved incoming boats in order for you to note them on your calendar and be aware of these outings. The following are the approved incoming rendezvous for the upcoming 2018 boating season: 6/22 – Antique Boat Poker Run -no wells -just a stop by Saturday 7/16 -7/19 – Sandusky Yacht Club - 8 boats: Mon -Thurs

7/23-7/26 – CYC -12 boats: Mon -Thurs 7/27-7/29 – JBM – 25-30 boats: weekend 7/31 – 8/3 Harbor View Yacht Club – 14 boats: Tues -Fri morn 8/3 – 8/5 Sand Pointe – 15 boats: weekend

As usual, we have lots to do in order to get things looking like they should. Please make every effort to attend. We have started the demo of the aluminum siding on the Robison side of the Club. This is going to be a lot more work than we initially assumed. Many thanks to Don Shepperson, Rex Oliver and Ron Kemp who have started on this first phase and doing a phenomenal job. Also want to thank Darryl Cambell for getting Fin # 3 ready for us to use earlier than usual especially due to the cold weather conditions. Vice-Commodore’s Comments Vice Commodore, Ian Blackburn I was crossing the Blue Water Bridge to come for this meeting and the temperature on the dash was 76 degrees. I looked out on Lake Huron and it was free of ice and crystal clear. This certainly gave me the boating itch, so it’s a good thing we have the first elite brigade kicking off this weekend so that we can get the island ready for the season. I would like to thank Debbie Siwek, Ron Draper, Glenn Nixon and Brian Fringer for getting us to this point. The workload is about to shift over to Scott Greenfelder, Tom Altobelli, Darryl Campbell, Tom Martin, Dale Hall and Ken Lipowski. Just a reminder that we are a team and if you need any help please don’t be afraid to ask. Rear-Commodore’s Comments Rear Commodore, Bill Calihan I had a chance to visit the island this past Saturday with the Commodore, some of the board members and members. We made three trips to deliver the vinyl siding and accessories to the island. We also had the window installers over to finish up the window project. A lot of preliminary work and planning was done for the siding project and off course the inside of the club house projects are in full swing already. I hope the weather cooperates this weekend there is a lot of work to be done. The one improvement that really stood out was the new windows that were installed over the winter. As we approached the club on the Finn Runner you see how beautiful the club house looked and when we went in to the club house the view looking to the outside was outstanding. What a difference these new windows have made. Looking forward to SATURDAY. Financial Report Treasurer, Brian Fringer Absent, excused. Given by R/C Calihan in P/C Carroll’s absence. With a current Safety inspection sticker, State and local authorities will only stop a vessel if they observe a violation in progress. Border Patrol and Coast Guard can stop a vessel without reason. Get your vessel inspected and display the sticker to avoid being stopped. Free inspections will be done at the Club the weekend of the ABYA Spring Dinner Dance June 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd . Correspondence All Showed the board and flag the special plaque that was made for P/C Whyard to be awarded upon is retirement from the club after 35 years. Commodore Pagel received a several correspondences from Colleen Hall. First item was she requested that a First Mates application and events to be handed out during the new member interviews. Second, she suggested we place recycling bins for cans and bottles behind bar. Third, she’d like the board to consider mailing First Mates membership info out with the annual membership dues packet. Lastly, suggested a ladies Elite Brigade ball cap to be handed out to the ladies who participate. It was suggested Tom Martin In Tom’s absence, Commodore Pagel read report. Bill wanted to make a motion to accept new members he interviewed recently. Kevin and Erin Rae. Club House – Scott Greenfelder This Saturday will try to get water going. Has parts for the stove. Ian asked about the progress of the roof on the second floor. Scott indicated it was moving along. Harbor & Grounds Tom Altobelli Tom showed a proposed sign to be placed throughout the harbor that stats NCYC is a private club and you must come to clubhouse for well assignment. Plan is to have a sign company make four. Also informed everyone that he is planning on buying Weber grills for the island. He received a good price for them. They were a little higher than the ones we typically use. He believes we will save money in the long run due to their much long durability life. A discussion took place regarding non-boating members privileges for “day boating”. The board referenced the by-laws in defining this question. Article III. Membership, Section 1.C states: “Non- boating members shall be entitled to all privileges including the holding of office and the rights to vote with the exception of docking ”. Thus, day boating to NCYC by non-boating members is prohibited. Publications – Ron Draper Revenues for advertising will grow from last year. Roster approaching deadline, get articles in. Pre- ordering of rosters going well, sold 15 so far. Secretary – Glenn Nixon Done with weekend worker schedule. Needs new members list from Debbie to get them scheduled. Tom Altobelli asked about weekend worker schedules the Monday of 3-day holiday weekends. Does his crew on Monday needs to work until 6:00? Glen clarified that his crewworks from 6:00 pm Friday until 6:00 pm Monday. The OD is off duty at noon on Monday, but they schedule workers until 6:00.

One item. Happy to report POS is working with new process. Discussed different levels for different bar prices. Changes by a swipe of a card. Level 1 is member prices, level 3 is guest. Made a few changes to the OD manual to reflect the instructions for the new POS system. Transportation – Darryl Campbell As many of you are already aware of number three Fin has been commissioned even though Mother Nature has chosen to keep it in its well a majority of the time either from pack ice or hurricane velocity winds. The thruster has been installed with a time relay/delay that only allows operation for 4-5 seconds at a time in an attempt that we don’t have a reoccurrence of last year’s failure. This year we are using a real bilge heater as light bulb are too vulnerable and prone to failure at the worse times. If you use the Fin, as some of you already have, you will notice a wire coming out of the battery hatch please leave it in place and unplug the black wire at the extension cord as the charger is tethered down. Finally, Fin 3 will receive a new rear running light mast to replace the damaged one along with new horns that are more audible. The parking lot has received a “No Turn Around” sign on one side of the entrance and will be joined by an adjacent sign in the near future in an attempt to minimize wear and tear to its surface. Bret Kahl has so graciously agreed to pound down the tie backs that have frost heaved in the parking lot free of charge. Tom Altobelli asked Darryl about the condition of the parking lot entrance. Darryl indicated in needs gravel and needs to be pounded down smooth. Darryl may call Clay Township police to see about support in patrolling the area to prevent cars coming in just for the turn around. Fleet Captain – Ken Lipowski Have a group reservation number for the St. Clair rendezvous. 18 wells reserved. Ken and Commodore Pagel and First Lady Linda met with GPYC to firm up the catering plans for the July rendezvous.

Robison Seawall Financial Projection template Projected budget for year’s end is $164K in bank. After paying $32K for seawall, Ian would have roughly $131K going into his year. Hope to do another seawall section in Ian’s year. Discussed financial status with seawall funding for general membership approval. Tom Altobelli asked about projecting what our funds will be the following year to ensure membership we have ample savings available. Membership Interview Update Debbie Siwek mentioned Membership cards going to printer tomorrow, need to get new members in. 3 tap wine station will get installed next to bear tappers. Lines for the taps will be run into liquor room so it will be room temperature. Will get wine off the beer tabs. Motion to spend $818 made by Darryl Campbell seconded by Bill Calihan seconded. Member of the Month – is an honor bestowed upon our members of extraordinary accomplishments and contribution to our club. This month, this tribute is going to a couple that joined NCYC in 2003 and has been a very regular part of our NCYC family ever since. They have been frequent attendees at the Elite Brigade and spring and fall work parties, as well as making themselves available anytime something needs to be done on our island. They have sponsored a very successful membership drive, recruiting new members, stepping up as weekday managers and weekend OD’s. Whenever there has been any activity, we all enjoy the many photograph’s that are taken. This Order of the Anchor is well deserved for such a hard working couple. Can you remember when our transportation to the mainland consisted of two19ft Green Colored Finn Runners with 75hp Chrysler Out Boards? "Fin Runner" was the real name of the boats & they were built by Chrysler. They were purchased by the 1969 CYC Transportation Director through Jim Riehl Senior's Chrysler dealership. Fin 1 replaced one of the Finn Runners in 1978 and Fin 2 came later and was followed by Fin 3. Now you know why we call them our "Fin Runners" or "Fins" for short.

How we have grown We started in 2009 with our first outing that hosted 60 people. In 2012 we added a second chapter on Lake Fenton based out of “Skipper Buds’” and we hosted over 150 people. We expanded again in 2014 adding our Blue Water Chapter. In 2017 our Lake St. Clair chapter hosted over 160 people with the help of numerous volun- teers and the staff of “The Idle Hour Yacht Club”. ANNAPOLIS, Md., November 6, 2017 – More than 40 million Kidde fire extinguishers equipped with plastic handles, some on the market for more than 40 years, have been recalled. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), “The fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency. In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard.” The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean water is urging recreational boat owners to check their boats for the recalled extinguishers and get a free metal-handled replacement by going to the CPSC recall website . The recall affects both plastic-handle and push-button Pindicator Kidde fire extinguishers, including 134, ABC- or BC-rated

models manufactured between January 1, 1973, and August 15, 2017. The extinguishers are red, white or silver and were sold in the US and Canada through a wide range of retailers from Montgomery Ward to Amazon. The CPSC recall website shows how to easily identify the affected extinguishers.

In the recall, Kidde also acknowledged the free replacement push-button extinguisher being sent to personal watercraft owners is similar in size to the recalled model but may not fit in the same location as the old fire extinguisher. “This may require a slightly different mounting orientation or location,” said BoatUS Foundation Assistant Director of Boating Safety Ted Sensenbrenner.” CPSC says there have been approximately 391 reports of failed or limited activation or nozzle detachment, including one fatality; approximately 16 injuries, including smoke inhalation and minor burns; and approximately 91 reports of property damage. Kidde may also be contacted toll-free at 855-271-0773 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET Saturday and Sunday. North Channel Lighted Buoy Survey Explained

NCYC Members, P/C Pat Carrol as our ABYA Delegate has provided us the Waterway Analysis and Management System Survey from the USCG as a first step in requesting the Coast Guard to provide Lighted Buoys on the North Channel entrance from Anchor Bay and around the Grassy Island curves. The ABYA is lobbying the USCG to add this to their Lighted Buoy program. The ABYA is asking all interested boaters to download the following 2-page document, fill out the blank spaces on the first page and mail to the address on the second page. The ABYA has filled in most of the questions for us so you only need to add your name and boat information. If enough boaters respond with a need to have the channel markers lighted, the USCG may provide us with the lighted buoys.
