March 2021 Beacon
NCYC March 2021 Beacon
From the Bridge – Commodore Glenn Nixon Sheila and I hope this finds all of our members safe and healthy. We continue to watch, pray and patiently wait for the COVID-19 threat to moderate and loosen its grip on our lives and businesses. The plan for the Commodore's Ball to be held at the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester on April 30th will likely be changed in favor of some type of event at the Club. We are staying optimistic we can have a formal event that will
help us maintain our traditions and will be enjoyable for all.
Planning for rendezvous for this coming season have proved to be very challenging. Our Fleet Captains Scott and Michele Goemmel have been reaching out to numerous venues with little success in getting commitments. We know for certain we will need to find an alternative to MacRay Harbor for the June rendezvous as MacRay has decided to no longer offer transient dockage. The only venue that has made commitment are Lexington Harbor for the weekend of July 23-25 and St. Clair Harbor for the weekend of August 13-15. Continue to watch for fanouts from Fleet for updates. We had our first meeting of the Board of Directors on January 14th. Chaplain Mark Javery did the honors of swearing in the entire group of Directors and Flag Officers. We discussed and agreed action plans for a number of tasks to address critical issues with our Clubhouse and grounds, such as solving the problem of standing water under the clubhouse, the erosion problem along the Genow near the swimming area, backfilling along the new walkways and repairing the A-Dock extension. We also approved membership for a number of our committees. We did go forward to finish all the committee approvals in the February Board meeting on February 11th along with progressing the many urgent repair projects. You can find details in the minutes of the January meeting in this March Beacon.
After only two meetings I recognized this year's Board is exceptional. I am confident we will have a very productive and successful year in the governance of the Club. The Membership can rest assured we are all working hard to improve the Club and always act in the best interests of our members. As always, please stay alert for fanouts and other communications from the Board, Flag, Fleet Captain and our new Chaplain Mark Javery. As always the Chaplain's call for prayers and support for Members facing challenges is critically important.
Everyone please stay safe and have a good March

From the Bridge – Vice Commodore Dale Hall Mother Nature treated us right through the entire month of January but, reality has set in and February is bringing us a very typical Michigan winter. Although the weather has turned harsh the water levels were dropping nicely until the ice
dams caused havoc for many in Algonac. The Coast Guard cutters worked diligently but, many people along the St. Clair River felt Mother Nature’s wrath in early February. We hope and pray that our friends and neighbors that have suffered water damage or displacement get relief quickly with a minimum about of damage. Knowing that these harsh winter days will turn into a milder March is what keeps us looking forward to boating season in Southeast Michigan. It will not be long and the great members of NCYC will be doing whatever it takes to make the island ready.
We want to give a special thank you to all members that have paid their 2021 dues. As a reminder, dues were payable during the month of January. If you have not already done so, please write that check immediately and reach out to Debbie Siwek, our Membership Director to advise her it is coming. Along with your 2021 dues
payment, please remember to fill out your requested weekends so that the scheduling of work hours for the Summer can be completed as early as possible.
Spring will be here before we know it and we encourage everyone to think about those high-quality people in your lives that would enjoy the Island as much as you do. Take the time to tell them all the great things about NCYC and get an enrollment package from Debbie Siwek before signing them up. We look forward to seeing you on the Island. V/C Dale
From the Bridge – Rear Commodore Brian Fringer
Rachel and I hope everyone are staying safe and healthy during the winter months. As we wait for this season’s launch, the NCYC board is busy with this year’s projects and are planning for the spring. With spring right around the corner, it is time to remind all members to make a point of attending one or more of our elite Brigade work parties. We always have plenty to do and there is no better way to create new and refresh old friendships by working together on our great club. Do not be afraid of getting involved, you will enjoy it.
Now we are in February and all members have renewed their membership through payment of their annual dues, please take
few moments to think about the high- quality friends in your life and a person that you would be proud to sponsor at NCYC. Our members are our best recruiters and sharing your love for the island with your best friends and family members helps make lifetime memories. As many boat clubs on Lake St. Clair struggle to retain members and survive financially, our business model of volunteerism and hard work continues to withstand the test of time. Share your dedication with someone close to you and reach out to Debbie Siwick to get them an enrollment package. Thank you, RC B
Message from the Fleet Captain Michele and I welcome all NCYC members to the 2021 boating season! We have been working hard to finalize our cruise schedule and thanks to COVID that has been challenging. Most marinas have abandoned their transient docks while many of the local yacht clubs continue to restrict guest access. However, we are happy to report that we have two confirmed dates and locations. So, get your dancing shoes on and prepare your livers for some fun!
We will be heading to both St. Clair and Lexington, MI. We are working to finalize a 3 rd cruise, but if the restrictions don’t allow we will still plan a great party at our club! A Fanout will be sent soon with the reservation process for each venue. Reservations will be first come, first serve on the available spots. In St. Clair we have a lock on all transient wells. In Lexington we have 20 currently on a group hold.
The cruise dates are:
July 23-25, Lexington Aug 13-15, St Clair
The St Clair cruise is going to be a bang out, costume-themed, rock band filled, party you will never want your parents to know about!!! Details forthcoming. Lexington will also be a launching point for those that are part of the Commodore’s Cruise in Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. We have such hard shoes to fill with our past Fleet Captains and we take this challenge very seriously! Rest assured, all cruises will create memories for you and your family – “NCYC Style”!
Stay tuned for the harbor reservation information.

A Message from Chaplain Mark Javery
The months of January and February brought loss and grief to several families of NCYC. Passing into eternal rest were longtime members Al Durand on January 2nd and Patricia Santavy on January 14 th . Please continue to keep Ruth Durand, PC Jim & Sandra Angers, as well as their entire families in your thoughts and prayers. On February 6 th Donna Kuhr’s mother Shirley F Russell passed into eternal rest. Keep Steve and Donna and their family also in your thoughts and prayers during this time of loss and mourning. At the time of this writing member Kevin Quinn is anticipating hip replacement surgery on February 24th. Pray for Kevin to have a successful procedure and quick recovery. I am not aware of any other NCYC members suffering loss, hospitalized, or under the weather as of this communication. I pray our membership is safe as we all get through winter here in the cold north or during travels, hopefully to somewhere warm.
February Musings….
As I sit at my computer looking outside it is cold, damp, and gloomy. A snow storm named Nathaniel is approaching from the south. Pure Michigan in February I guess. February is the month in which my wife and I always try to escape the cold for a couple of weeks and as it turns out we are blessed with great NCYC friends we can stay with in Florida.
February is also the month we celebrate Valentines Day. A day to celebrate romance and love. Although its origins are somewhat mysterious, subject to argument, and varied the legends mostly lead us back to Saint Valentine. Three different saints are recognized as Saint Valentine or Valentinus by the Catholic Church and the stories surrounding each are different. You can research and pick your favorite but; spoiler alert, all three were martyred. As by the time you read this Valentines Day will have passed I hope you took the time to find that perfect Hallmark card, buy those roses, buy those chocolates, go to that favorite restaurant, and celebrate the love in your heart for that special someone. Our earthly love is a gift from God to be cherished and nurtured. During this month let us also never forget God’s teachings on the purity of Godly love we should show towards one another. If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give my body over to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails…… Paul concludes this chapter on Love in verse 13 by saying that in the end there are three essential things that will matter – FAITH, HOPE, and LOVE and the greatest of these is Love. The word of our Lord 1 Corinthians 13 (NIV)

1981. A lawyer, a tax accountant and a financial advisor walk into a bar. Seriously. That was the start of a well-coordinated plan that’s still paying off in 201 9 .
Managing wealth is no joke. And advice coordination is essential as wealth grows, and grows more complex. From thoughtfully planning for a long retirement to addressing unique needs like concentrated equity positions or selling a business, a Raymond James financial advisor can pull the pieces together to orchestrate a properly synched approach. LIFE WELL PLANNED.

Commodore’s Comments
Commodore, Glenn Nixon
Sheila and I hope all of our members had a restful, safe and happy holiday break. We look back on 2020 with enormous gratitude for the support, encouragement, dedication and hard work of our membership allowing us all to continue to enjoy, albeit with some disappointing restrictions, our Island Paradise. For Sheila and I, spending time at the Club has always been an escape and welcome break from stress and constant demands of working life. Our boating life helps us to slow down a bit and invest time into something with untold value - our relationships with those we love and share a common passion with. I cannot fully express my gratitude to P/C Bill Calihan and Lady Teri for their herculean dedication and hard work under very stressful circumstances. I feel P/C Calihan and his performance during this pandemic will be remembered as one of the most successful in the history of the Club. Sheila and I are Looking Forward with Great Expectation. It is an honor and a privilege to serve as your Commodore for 2021. I encourage our members to look toward the 2021 boating season with high expectations for our Club. With the swift rollout of a COVID vaccine, I am hopeful we see life gradually return to normal by April or May. In any case, I can assure everyone your Club leadership will work hard to provide access to our Club and amenities while keeping our members safe as we did in 2020. As always, the hard work and support of the membership is critical to keeping our Club operating smoothly. Again, thanks to all who worked extra hard to make last year a success. And, thanks in advance to those members who I am confident will step up and ensure the successful preparation and operation of our Club regardless of the challenges we may face. My pledge to the membership as Commodore for 2021 remains to always act in the best interest of the Club and its Members. I continually seek ways to leave the Club in better condition than when I arrived. I encourage all Members to make suggestions as well as concerns known to the Board and Flag so that we may act and constantly improve our boating life and cherished relationships with our fellow Members.
Vice-Commodore’s Comments
Vice Commodore, Dale Hall
Vice Commodore’s Comments Colleen and I would like to wish everyone a Very Happy New Year. We know that everyone is looking forward to 2021 and all the opportunities that a new year brings. It is truly an honor for me to serve as your Vice Commodore this year. A special thank you to Past Commodore Bill Calihan and his lady Terri for their tireless work serving the club and providing leadership for what turned out to be a very challenging year. With all the changes

to rules, regulations and requirements, North Channel Yacht Club (NCYC) was able to pull off a very successful boating season and have a lot of fun in the process. We also want to thank all the outgoing Board of Directors, Fleet Captain and Board Recorder and welcome the new team for this calendar year. Thank you also, to all the members that have stepped forward to organize and champion an event for the upcoming season. It is through these events that the spirit and traditions of NCYC continues to live on. Commodore Glenn and his lady Sheila have a great year planned for 2021 and with a little luck and cooperation from our government officials, we know this year will be outstanding. Lake St. Clair water levels continue to drop slightly and if the Army Corp of Engineer estimates are accurate, we will see approximately 8 inches less water by the end of March, as compared to March of last year. Again, with a little luck we might realize those “happy medium” lake levels that we have all been hoping for. Get ready, because the maintenance of your boat and the preparation of the island is only four months away and it will be here before you know it. Let’s make 2021 the best year ever for the best Yacht Club on the Great Lakes. We look forward to seeing you on the Island. V/C Dale Rachel and I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! We hope everyone stayed safe and enjoyed the holidays. I would like to thank PC Bill and Terri for a great 2020, we could not have had the success we did without them. I would like to thank Jill, PC Rick, Frank, John, Darryl and Ron for their years of service on the Board and Tony for his diligence and hard work in 2020 as our board recorder. Based on the situation, it made the job very difficult and he did an amazing job. I would like to congratulate our new board member’s Kevin, Bill, Melissa, Al, Tom and Scott. I am looking forward to a great year and working with all of you. I would also like to welcome Doug as our new board recorder and Mark as our new chaplain. I am looking forward to working with you. Even though our holidays have been somewhat restrictive, I am looking forward to celebrating with our NCYC families to congratulate Commodore Glenn and his lady Sheila in April to kick off a great year. I am proud and humbled to represent you as your new Rear Commodore. I look forward to working with the Flag Officers, Glenn and Dale, as we steer the ship toward another successful year for 2021. We will continue to make NCYC the best club on the Lake. Rear-Commodore’s Comments Rear Commodore, Brian Fringer

ABYA Report P/C Bill Calihan As of now like most businesses and organizations things are proceeding slowly. No meeting in January or February and the March meeting is still up in the air. The Midland rendezvous will possibly be canceled. The 2020 Christmas party has been delayed till April 2021. We are trying to get some smaller fundraising events together such as a spaghetti dinner as restaurants open. We are staying safe because of COVID.

Tom talked to the marine contractor Brad Patterson with BP Marine. They installed 2 new ice clusters today and they also replaced 2 pilings that we had put in a year ago that had been snapped because of ice. Last year green wood was the only option to make the repair. Brad replaced those pilings at no charge saving the club $1300.00. Tom has built a great relationship with BP Marine.

Old Business 1. Plan for mitigating water under the club house. Working on 3 separate proposals. Bill Burkhardt will take this project on. 2. DTE survey and genow seawall erosion by swim platform. Dale Hall has been going back and forth with DTE on who is responsible financially for the high voltage cable coming through the seawall. DTE claims no responsibility and will not buck up. Dale suggests finding a well insured local contractor to dig and see what is causing the erosion. DTE will be present during the inspection providing their suggestions. 3. Requirements for bar staff members to be professionally trained on alcohol awareness in order to comply with the club’s insurance stipulations. During the audit, they had 1 finding regarding alcohol awareness. Brian Fringer said the recommendation is to have all OD’s watch a short online video that will comply with the insurance company. They will come back to the February meeting with a plan. 4. Maintaining NCYC traditions. The Guidelines and Policy committee will be integrated with the Traditions committee suggested by Rick Romatz. Members will be added to the committee as we discuss new business.
